I've never run a Summoner - but I have a Character Concept that I'm thinking of trying out. A Summoner whose eidolon ISN'T built for combat, but reather is trying to fill the role of "Scout". What a party rogue might do, but perhaps at greater range.
The Summoner would use Bond Senses to "ride along" with the eidolon until it got into trouble (attacked, trapped, whatever), then dismiss the eidolon until the party needed a rogue again...
So this is kind of an open ended question - how would you "build" a "scout" eidolon?

wow...24 hours and no suggestions.
I figured at least 3 people would suggest that I just run a Half-Elf Shadow Dancer/Barbarian or something, then have two people explain why I am a rotten "roll-player", before I had someone offer workable suggestions...
Some things I am thinking the eidolon should be:
Small (gives a bonus to Stealth and DEX)
Humaniod, so that he has Hands to use Disable Device (to open locks)
Skilled, to get DD and maybe Stealth
any other suggestions?

Bond Senses doesn't last long enough. Try the Message cantrip instead.
Make sure you buy extra movement speed via limbs(legs) and such. Pick up at least one alternate movement mode as well.
Skilled in Stealth and Perception combined with additional senses like Scent would have good value as well.
One of the builds in The Summoner's Handbook is a Skill-o-don that would give you a good start.

My -12 PFS character "Chance" has an "evil twin" named "Skippy" who is planned that way.
Small bipedal eidolon.
Feat: Extra Traits (Adopted[Halfling-helpful] & Inspired)
Evolutions: Skilled x3 (Perception, Disable Device, Stealth)
Added skills are: Acrobatics, Disable Device, Disguise, & Use Magic Device.
I'm currently playing in campaign where another PC has an eidolon built in a similar manner, I believe, and it's working well for us thus far.

In our Skull n' Shackles run, we had a Master Summoner who really showed us what a 'scout-type' eidolon can do. Remember that your eidolon comes into the game with darkvision, can be made small to increase its Stealth, can gain evolutions for Stealth and Perception and can communicate with you telepathically at any distance.
In our case, she was also given flight, water breathing, swim and low-light vision as well as the ability to Detect Magic. He used her to seek out ships on the horizon, to scout underwater caves and to find reefs that might threaten the ship (he was our pilot). We never bothered to give her Disable Device or used her as a trap monkey - didn't fit the concept - nor did we use any wand-wielding cheese with her, but even still she was incredibly effective.

ok, I've not had a chance to run my "scout" eidolon yet, but I have encountered someone else with one - and they look like a lot of fun.
but ... I am getting two different stories on how communication with the eidolon works. Wiggz above says "... can communicate with you telepathically at any distance." which I took to mean the Link (Ex) ability from the eidolon write-up was two-way communication. But some people are saying it is only one way communication - for the Summoner to give the eidolon orders. Which is it? Can the Summoner and Eidolon communicate with each other via "Link"? Is this a strickly mental communication?

This is the rule in question:
A summoner and his eidolon share a mental link allows for communication across any distance (as long as they are on the same plane). This communication is a free action, allowing the summoner to give orders to his eidolon at any time.
I can see it being interpreted either way since the rule does not specify whether the communication is "one way" or "two way" communication.
Normally, when communication is discussed, two-way is assumed. Normally, if it is one-way, that would be specified in the description.
The statement "allowing the summoner to give orders..." doesn't mean no other form of communication is possible.
"My car allows me to travel easily and quickly along great distances, allowing me to get to work in 10 minutes."
It would be silly to assume that travelling to work in 10 minutes was the ONLY form of travel I could use the car for.
