I once had an arcane trickster that used a rod of maximize spell and a rod of quicken spell to hit a drow matron mother and her servants with cone of cold.

She had the gal to teleport directly into my bed chambers and threaten me. She never finished her sentence.

GM told me that she survived due to the first blast setting off her contingent teleport. What didn't survive was the surrounding walls of the inn, her minions, and several other patrons.

Let's face it, being powerful can be quite fun.

Sorry fun police, great story, but by RAW you couldn't have used both, and it strains credibility that you could have even drawn both in the surprise round.

She knew I was there. I knew she was there. Why would there have been a surprise round?

And it is perfectly legal to use one rod on the first spell and the other rod on the second spell. She didn't see me pull them out because of mislead spell I had cast during our "brief" conversation.

The Tricky Spells class feature of the Arcane Trickster lets me do this while having my hands full too.

So how does that strain credibility again?

RD I will reply when I get home but a simple spellcraft should have shut mislead down.

Such a rule would prevent the spell from ever fulfilling its intended purpose. Even if you prove it to be RAW, it clearly isn't RAI.

I'm just happy wizards and the like can walk around with magic sticks now with a reason.

Many spells are hampered from fulfilling their intended purpose by the person you are using it against knowing what you are doing. Charm Person? The guy next to him points at you and screams for guards for your attempted date rape. Glibness? I think I decide to literally not listen to the man who obviously just made himself the world's most convincing liar. Seems more like a feature than a bug; it's what Spellcraft is there for. Use your spells like Mislead on something not wise to your arcane tricks and it will work just fine.

Magic staffs are a thing. A horribly overpriced, but still kinda handy, thing.
