Simple Goblin Racial Trait

Homebrew and House Rules

Just a small trait:

- Stout: You ate way too many pickled rats growing up. You are slower than other members of your race but you have a stronger frame. Removes the -2 racial penalty to Strength. Replaces Fast.

Is that balanced? UP? OP?
It's meant for my mounted Goblin character.

Thanks!

you are doing one of the things that makes me hate homebrewed ideas, giving up something you feel you don't need or want for more of what you do. just for the one thing you want in this instance.

Shrug, I want a small race to use a mount without a Str penalty.

The other option would be to go Goblin Samurai, which makes even less sense.

I don't consider this balanced because this results in +4 Dex, -2 Charisma. And no, two +2 bonuses and one -2 penalty does not equate to one +4 bonus and one -2 penalty because the value of statistics increases quadratically.

It also doesn't put a good taste in my mouth. I always believed one should embrace the limitations of their race.

Strangely enough there is a small race without a Str penalty, the nerdy Wayangs.

I assume either the design philosophy shifted from (all small races must have a Str penalty) or someone snuck them past the editor (bless them).

If the former is true and the old races were redone, I'm sure halflings would not have a Str penalty since they're supposed to be so athletic.

For Goblins I'd suggest moving around the stat bonus, reduce Dex by 2 to improve Str by 2.

Just go Monkey Goblin. Reflavor it less hairy, more goblin. They do lose the Ride bonus, but that's not amazing anyway.

I think you will have to lose 2 points of dex as well then it would fly at my table.

Strength is not equal to movement speed, especially for a small mounted character, you know this.

Dip a level of barbarian, problem solved

Athletic or not they are 30 pounds. They should have less not more str

1: 30-40lb
2: Wayangs are in the same weight class and don't have a Str penalty.
3: Weight is Size, not Str. Small size characters are double fined for martial pursuits when they have a Str penalty.

3 is the most important here.

Theoretically, a trait which swaps -2 Strength for -2 Constituion is balanced, at least as far as Ultimate Races is concerned, because it's still within the "Greater Paragon" racial attribute distribution type.

The alternative would be a Goblin-type race with "Flexible", which grants +2 to two different abilities, such as +2 Dexterity and +2 Wisdom

That said, if you're honestly that concerned about the penalty, consider asking your GM to let you use a custom race design.

That would be interesting, a race that allows you to switch a penalty around...

Again, Monkey Goblin has no Stength penalty, but has a Wisdom penalty and 20 ft ground speed.

If its sturdier than dropping the dex to 2 to lose the strength penalty seems fair. Other than playing a monkey goblin of course.

You could be a skinwalker, which would let you swap your physical stat bonus around. In fact, skinwalkers can be Small creatures depending on what their 'normal' form is without affecting their statistics. And they have a speak with animals SLA. I honestly have never played a mount character, but being able to talk to your mount sounds pretty advantageous.

You know very little about strength them. Why are men stronger than women? size and the weight that comes with it.

some are plenty strong without a lot of either

Medium races have a +2 to +0 range in Str.

Small races could easily have a +0 to -2 range.

There's all sorts of racial quirks going on.
