Don't give up your eye for anything. I have always been convinced that Odin got ripped off.

Ultimate knowledge does seem tempting though...

Well yeah--otherwise I'd have been wrong in my blog when I said we now have more designers than ever before, right? Our local deviner (developer/designer Advanced Class Guide style hybrid class) Logan is also on the design team, and I think he may be retraining into vanilla designer!

Probably about as much as most of the design team except gabby me. However, his tag says "Developer" still because he took the first level in that, so that can be confusing. You may remember his avatar, the giant slug?

OK, he's only got 15 posts over the last year, so I don't feel nearly as blind now. :-P

True enough my friend. I will be interested to possibly revisit the topic after we see the final version of OP&R next month. Thank you for the discourse and open mind.

What are some of the other things you have your eye on right now that you don't mind spoilering? I am pretty pleased about all the new FAQs you're taking point on. My Oracle "all caster" is sad at the spells known issue, but that needed to happen in some capacity or another.

We really appreciate having Gabby paizo employees, especially since you're basically required to be nice to us, hah!

You mentioned before you studied linguistics, was that formal study at a college or university or was it personal study?

Are you going to head a seminar at the next Paizocon about successfully communicating on the forums?

I'm not sure if niceness if a basic requirement, but I simply prefer it. It makes things more pleasant and fun, rather than stressful.

I took a bunch of linguistics classes at MIT, but I did it really weirdly and in a way I wouldn't recommend (started with a cross-listed class that wound up being all linguistics grad students except me, having not taken any other linguistics, and sort of swam backwards through linguistics courses towards the intro, without taking the intro). I don't really recommend doing this, that first class was quite a fire hose.

I don't think anyone would come to a seminar about successfully communicating on the forums. The trouble is that very few people are cognizant that they have a communication problem, and they mostly think that it's the other side's fault. In the vast majority of cases, the "blame", if you can even really call it that, lies somewhere in between, which muddies the water even more.

Well, to be fair the GM can pick and choose mythic powers after the first. If you want to make a single-enemy encounter challenging, you pretty much need to take Dual Initiative as your first Mythic Ability.

Mythic bosses with PC class levels (not just monsters where you pick and choose Mythic universal monster abilities) can do just fine as bosses against non-mythic PCs, and they don't even have to spend all their points on the extra standard action either. Of course, adding a few mooks usually makes most fights more entertaining anyway.

That awareness goes a long way, and I was really glad to see when you started spreading bits and pieces. Now we just need the forums to work in Body language and tone...

Can Mythic Augment Summoning actually nerf your summons?
The feat text says

Quote:
Additionally, if the creature summoned has damage reduction, its damage reduction becomes DR/epic.

If the creature you summon would normally have DR/Alignment or DR/Adamatine, that's going to be a nerf in most mythic games, since almost any mythic opponent will bypass DR/Epic. Worse yet, if you summon an earth elemental, it would normally have DR 10/-, which is better than the DR 10/Epic it seems gets with mythic augment summons.

It this feat suppose to be a disadvantage?

Hmm, maybe it means, "change to include epic" so like DR/evil would become DR/evil and epic? It certainly doesn't seem to say that, but that's how I'd do it.

Hi Mark!

Would appreciate your take on this one. All disclaimers understood.

Does the Barbed Devil's Impale ability work like Constrict, allowing a claw-grab-impale-release/claw-grab-impale-release attack routine? The answer doesn't seem immediately obvious to me. :-)

We've got a bit of discussion going over HERE, with text/links/etc, and a few different takes on the table.

Thanks! :-)

I believe that the wording is very slightly different than for constrict, since it deals its damage "to a grabbed opponent with a successful grapple check", which seems to mean they must be a grabbed opponent first to qualify for that line (so all future grapple checks).

Granted, Pathfinder grapple is much simpler now than ever before for straightforward builds, but I think it really needs a FAQ blog some day for all the many corner cases. There are at least two corner cases that I happen to know are either being misinterpreted by some players or being correctly interpreted by strict RAW but not working as intended.

Your thoughts on this?

As far as I know it's a fairly unique scenario, an ability that just flat out grants an extra attack as an action besides Standard or "as part of X".

Hmm, I agree with most people (and you?) that it's its own unique thing, not an attack action. I can see why it's definitely a corner case though!

Anything except Sacred Stones with its infinite grind breaking the power curve.

I like the fact that mage types can hit from range but also in melee. High crit classes like the swordmaster and super mobile flying characters can also be pretty fun.

Haha, I like the way you think! It's a pretty cool system, even though it's hand held, it's more involved than even the last one for Wii.

And my favorite addition, a mode where your units can die and you get them back!

Hi there and thanks for all your answers.

I know these are 'just' opinions but I'm curious about a few things.

First, how well does the maestro bloodline and eschew materials work with each other? Ie: if echew removes the material component does a spell with V,M count as only having verbal components?

And (hope I just didn't overlook this) in Inner Sea Gods, what boons does a character get from the Deific Obedience feat? They are divided by the prestige classes under the gods but I can't find which selection a character with this feat follows. (probably their choice?)

You can cast any spell with a material component costing 1 gp or less without needing that component.

So it's still a spell with a material component, though you can cast it without needing that component.

So exalted boons.

Hope that helps!

I find it generally entertaining, and I like how it lets you do things like set the encounter rate and the battle speed, plus it has tons of Final Fantasy allusions/easter eggs.

Is Greater wild empathy supposed to work on elementals, fey, and lycanthropes despite their intelligence? None of those creatures currently in the game have int scores low enough to be affected.

And the thought of bellyrubbing a slavering werewolf into submission amuses me.

It seems like it was forward thinking design but one that wouldn't do anything right, and I have to admit, the idea of low-Int elementals and fey amuses me.

That may be one of the series my little brother told me about. Is that the one where the main character kills most of the male deities from several pantheons and sleeps with the female deities? It's hard to keep his explanations of the different series he's discussing straight sometimes, but I vaguely remember that being correct.

"The same bonus" = ?

(A) A shield bash attack based on the same base attack bonus as the attack that scored the critical hit?

(B) A shield bash attack using the same attack bonus as the attack roll that threatened the critical hit?

(C) A shield bash attack using the same attack bonus as the roll that confirmed the critical hit?

I assume the answer is (B)—that seems the most sensible ruling to me anyway—but thought I'd ask, since it struck me as a bit odd. I guess I was stuck on Shield Slam, Tripping Strike, and the like, which just use the attack number itself ...

Silver Crusade

ADDENDUM to Bashing Finish question:

"A melee weapon" = ?

In particular, assume we've got a guy with a sword and a shield. He makes a shield bash attack and happens to score a critical hit. Does that critical hit, with the shield itself, trigger a second, free shield bash? And if that second, free shield bash happens to score a critical hit (very unlikely, sure), will that trigger a third shield bash, also free ... and so on ... ?

I'll answer the addendum first--a shield bash is a melee attack, so that potential infinite loop could definitely happen. That one seems clearcut.

As to the original question--I like this one. It's tough! It clearly isn't C, since you might score a critical hit without confirming at all. I think B is the most direct reading of the text but A makes the most sense in terms of adjudication--you might have a much higher or lower enhancement bonus on the shield compared to the qualifying attack after all, or other effects that it would be highly odd to add or ignore

Weird Thoughts on True Strike:
For instance, with B, do you apply the +20 to hit from a true strike that affected the qualifying attack? If so, you are in the extremely odd situation that you've applied that +20 to hit on the follow-up even though the spell itself is expended, so you don't get the other effect of ignoring concealment, having essentially decomposed the spell, which I had always considered a single immutable unit, in a way that I've never even considered possible.

So I would probably go with A as least likely to lead to weird corner cases, but I think B is a solid reading (and the most direct one) as well.
