@Valeriya- For the Pantheon, I actually chose the pantheon because of the origins of those such listed (among others). I know it may seem confusing, but perhaps (depending on the character paths) things will seem more clear as to why this is. Sort of a grand design in place, and I don't want to ruin possible surprises.

I can see your points on views of revenge. Speaking of Batman, in various renditions of the comics, Batman can be quite evil and more anti-hero. But yes, how you seek the revenge does show the degree of evilness. As for your character, how you wish her to progress and begin is completely up to you. I will work with what you give me and do my best to oblige.

Okay then. Valeriya would keep Calistria then. I appreciate what you mean about me controlling her progression but this is a team effort. I can't just ignore the events of the campaign and the world you create.

For example, I had a City Elf Hedge Mage in the Dragon Age RPG. I intended him to have a journey of self-discovery leading him to his origins with the Dalish and possibly finding his long-lost father. He grew idolizing the Dalish. My GF played a DAlish Archer who hated all non-Dalish. She was supposed to grew out of her prejudices. Unfortunately, my friend played a templar-in-training who hated elves. All of the these character brought out the worst in each other. My mage had his dreams crushed and didn't find his father. GF's elf only had her prejudices confirmed. the Templar hated us both and got worse. We ended up pausing the campaign and starting a PF campaign with the same characters instead.

I realize that none of this makes sense if you've never played Dragon Age and I'm sorry for that but this story really helps encapsulate my point

All the characters were good on their own and were intended to grow past their prejudices and become better people. That plan didn't last after the first session. We could ignore each other's characters and the effects they had on each other. If we continued on the intended paths, it would have required us to ignore everything we say and do.

As for Batman, there is an entire chart that proves he can be any alignment.

Can't open that link at work Q.Q But yeah, Batman has radically different alignments depending on which batman series you are reading.

@Lexi- No one is forced to take up any role. If needed, I can supply you guys with NPC(s) as needed throughout the campaign. Play a character concept that you have been dying to play. This is like your one chance to play and grow a character you have never had the chance to before.

EDIT: This is almost entirely based on playing the story of a character, not a specific build. It is a campaign I've wanted to run for a long time (and one day play in again). I once had a character named Kai. He was a Paladin, raised in tragedy and destined to always have tragedy befall him. His entire story revolved around his testament to never fall. The party did eventually split up and out of the 7 of us playing, 4 became completely evil and plotted to kill the 3 of us that were still good. There was one epic battle in the end, but he never did break the cycle of tragedies. Just live to see the end of the campaign (alone >.<).

Making a Brawler :D Potentially an oread, but a human would be fine too really :)

I'm currently considering a character for this. Reworking my design from the ground up.

Yep. The preview is always available for free. Just do a search for the product name on the site and you should be able to find it.

@everyone- I will be posing two choices:

1) We can go with 20 point buy for your crunches, but with young characters (+2 dex, -2 Str, Con, Wis) and be near adulthood (when young stat changes will go away)

or

2)Going with 15 point-buy and using beta rules for ability score increases (like my RL group does most of the time).

Can we have a (some people gonna kille me)

3) Going with 15 point-buy with young characters (+2 dex, -2 Str, Con, Wis) and be near adulthood (when young stat changes will go away)

With option 2&3, instead of getting a +1 inherent to a single ability score every 4 levels, you instead pick 2 different scores that each get a +1. In most cases, by level 8, the extra 2 points will bring you to 21 point buy or higher (and continues to increase).

Example: You have 2 scores at 15 as your two highest stats. At level 4 you, you raise both to 16. That second score going from 15 to 16 would be worth 3 points on point buy, so your...

That will make a huge diference between the young inexperts and the seasoned warrior they will become.

@Juan- Well, I didn't want to make the characters that weak starting off (though the +2 dex with 15 point buy would benefit your archer).

DM-DR, what is the firearms availability in this world?

@Vixen- Early only and Emerging (Just barely enough to cover archetypes and Gunslinger class).

So, fiddling with the brawler. :) It looks fun. Not sure how to build her yet - have we decided on a path to go with young vs point build? :) I kinda like the idea of starting young. :)

As reluctant as I am to do it, a younger age might work better better with my backstory. Though it'd be a little unfair because Intelligence is my main stat and would be unaffected by the young template.

@Lexi- I was leaving that up to the group. Trying to let you guys have some input for character creation. IF you guys all want to start young we will do either 20 point buy, or go with Juan's idea of young and 15 point buy.

@Valeriya-Yeah, the young does favor dex, int, or cha based characters. However, as the bonuses do go away later, things will balance later. :)

Got a populated map as well as what I think might be a decent starting area. You cna view the maps here, but building a campaign tab for storing everything. If you go the lbkpf forums (the private ones) You can find the campaign tab under "On-line Campaigns" and "Enveloping Mist".

Lower Asteria (and part of Upper Asteria)

Oneiros Populated

This doesn't mean we will be playing the game on those forums. It is just so I can get things set-up for now. I can transfer everything to Paizo if/when needed.

Premise as a basic plot (James, might be best to keep slient abou tthe foreshadowing title):

"With wars a thing of the past, peace has reigned longer than anyone can remember. Dragons? Angels? Demons? All fairytales best told by the older races. Man rules with an ironfist that has kept the lands stable for two thousand years. But how long can peace really last?"

We will begin in the small town of Dawsbury.

Cool Stuff!

Valeriya would be from a city with a strong Thieves' guild presence and would be in the village only a few days to gather herbs...or so she thinks!

Sorry about not putting mile markers. It is about 6 hours travel (3/4 day normal travel pace) to Mynyddsey (the metropolis south east of Dawsbury). Which would be more to Valeriya's liking.

Mynyddsey:

Yay! That sounds like a perfect place for her to be from!

Dotting for interest.

Character Idea:

I don't have any problems with the current campaign, its just the campaign might have a problem with my character. I have had an idea for a this character for a while but it would require a lenient DM and, most likely, a homebrew game because some of the rules governing him aren't yet defined by Paizo.

The basic idea is that of a human prodigy. He was born to a poor family (farmers or traders) but with a tremendous intellect and curiosity. He hated the monotonous lifestyle of his parents and instead opted for a life of magic and power. Through merit alone he made it into a renowned school for wizards and easily out paced the other students. Unfortunately he had some unique ideas about magic that got him into trouble. Specifically about necromancy. While most shied away from it, calling it taboo, he embraced it. To him all magic is neutral. It is the wizard that is evil or good. So he set out to prove one could do good with necromancy for there were many benefits to the Art. Unfortunately this lead to his expulsion from the school. It didn't dissuade him though. He carried out his own experiments in secret.

One of those experiments went terribly wrong. He was trying to create an undead familiar but he didn't have the experience to carry it out properly. The familiar was created but he died in the process and came back as an undead as well.

He knows all too well that should anyone find out they would kill him out right so he fled to a small town (Drawsbury I guess). There he is a mortician and grounds keeper of the graveyard for the people (a job no one really wants). He also uses his magic to help those who have lost someone commune with them and find peace. In this way he makes himself a well liked person and thus it is less likely they will kill him should they find out. He keeps his entire body covered (I imagine him looking like Ezio from Assassin's creed) to prevent detection, including a mask. His reason to the people is that a spell went wrong and left him horribly scarred (not a total lie). So now he studies in secret both to fix himself and to learn more about the forbidden art of necromancy.

He is still young in years but is essentially, a really weak lich. The skeleton familiar is completely obedient and hides during the day. He does most of his studying at night since undead don't sleep.

So tell me what you think. If this doesn't work I can always come up with something else.

Something else that I would like to see in this campaign is more downtime and the roleplay within that aspect of the game. I like non-combat, non-adventuring things too. Political, social, and other things of that nature. I am growing more and more fond of games that incorporate this.

Jacob Romero wrote:

** spoiler omitted **...

So he's like Amon but not really lying? Interesting. You'd probably need a unique template though.

And I agree with the Grand Moff. That's why I made sure Valeriya has a job that isn't murderhobo. Everyone should think of that and we'll see what we can make of that.

@Vixen- can certainly be done. I really want to make use of Ultimate Combat since I just got it recently.

@Jacob- Power level reasons compared to everyone else, I don't think I can let you be undead. Now, if we started earlier in his life before everything happens (before he goes into wizard training and everything) then we could work something out. The character is doable, just not starting exactly where you want to have him start. Also, creating an undead familiar would be pretty high level magic compared to a level 1 character which is an issue as to why the current proposal is a bad starting point.

DM-DR wrote:

I got it last year and it has some good stuff. I really like the background options it offers. Especially considering it gives me ideas to work from in building a backstory.

I think at this point I am on the fence to having the young template. I would prefer the 20 point buy because I feel that PC's should be more powerful than the average NPC. However, I will still work with the 15 point buy and young template if it is chosen.

As for a character, here are a few concepts that I am considering:

  • A Half-elven ranger (wild shadow) who is more comfortable in the wilderness than the city. She would contribute by being a guide, hunter, and all-around wilderness type.
  • A human spontaneous caster who is struggling to understand the powers they have been granted. They would work at the tavern and would be versed in being a barkeep or barmaid.
  • A human fighter who just finished training. He would be looking for some excitement than this old dusty town he grew up in and is bored of.
  • An angry, bitter half-orc barbarian. He is looking for his wife and two children. They were kidnapped while he was out hunting, and he searches with an intense passion to find them. He doesn't know where they went except for the trail that was there when he got back. Since he would be strong, he would do work that required great strength.

That's fine. I am just afraid I might lose some motivation for the character if he doesn't go to school first. But starting him off earlier in life could be interesting.

Cool stuff. My suggestion would be to go with the one you feel like has the best backstory and character. It feels like you've written more for the Barbarian than the others. He could be a dockworker, farmer, city guard, gang enforcer, construction worker, or blacksmith if you need jobs that require physical strength.

@Vixen- I will say that the wild shadow looks really interesting. I haven't played nor seen one played. The free entangle on a hit (while in favored terrain) is a pretty sweet power. I guess good thing for DM it is only on one enemy, lol. I am also curious as to which spont. caster you would choose for the barkeep/maid. The half-orc's backstory could be really interesting. The newbie fighter seems kinda bland right now. :)

EDIT: going along with Valeriya here. You do have the most story for the half-orc thus far. With this being an poorer semi-far town/cross-roads community, there would be plenty of options for his employment.

@Jacob- You may stick with it, or change your plans entirely. The main objective of this campaign will be to grown a character as a full person. Not just an adventurer or a class. It is great to have a direction. Maybe you go exactly as you planned, maybe not. But the development of the character and the choices they will make will be the exciting part. :)

I think I will flesh out the barbarian. I actually made the idea about the story in about five minutes last night. The kidnapping part was inspired by a PC in a different game. Although his wife was killed instead of being kidnapped. It just seemed to flow. I will use this as a starting point and build on the concept.

Hmm. Thinking on some different characters too, the brawler just isn't gelling right.

Have a kinda cool shapeshifter ranger, though that ends up being severely underpowered damage wise later. Interesting RPs, as she doesn't feel like most of the shifting is under her control. :)

A halfling cavalier - those are troublesome in most campaigns, but I always wanted to play one - this one would at least be small enough to ride smaller things? This would be a more 'adventure is fun!' kind of character.

Cad Fighter gnome? :) I just like the idea of improvised weapons. :)

So, who is still interested in playing (as I haven't heard from a few in awhile).

I have:
Lexi, Vixen, Valeriya, James, and Jacob as ones I have heard from with fleshed concepts/stories. Also looks like Magus and Juan have posted recently, just no fleshed concepts offered (with a small story).

This would put me at 7 people. I'm willing to accept more applicants. I'll be accepting the 8 that seem the best suited to work out. Will start making decisions mid-week (Tuesday or Wednesday) next week. Don't have to have crunches, just character concepts with a story decided.

We will also get everything else sorted out around the same time (place, direction, stats).

Feel free to also PM me here or on the other forums if you want to ask a private question (or concept) about your character.

Anton, the bland newbie fighter ;D

he is son of a damsel daughter of an old knight. She was assaulted by a band of elves, or so she thought, the day of her wedding while traveling to their new home with her husband. He was murdered, and she, though left for dead, survived. After a few weeks, she realized was pregnant, but she wasn't sure about the child fathers.
His father took care of her, and left the city in favor of a little town. (Dawsbury)
She died after giving a birth a boy, not realizing he was not from his late husband, named him Anton before passing away. His father take care of the child and raised him, but he realized he wasn't completely human, altought not half-elven either. The loss take a price on the old knight, who become a drunken.
The boy considers himself human, with ears a bit pointy and a prodigious keen sight. With some training from his grandfather, he become quite good with the bow, and disciplined, so he joined the town guard to take experience and earn some money, as he knows his inquisitiveness will take him into exploring other lands....

Hes going to be a straight fighter, that will specialize on bow.

Took the knight idea from james, so if he get trained by him, we can be brotherly-friends or rivals, up to him.

I imagine most of us would know each other to a certain degree and, whoever is chosen, will need to work that out.

Juan, I want to make sure I understand your character's backstory.

His mother was the daughter of a knight. Got raped by a gang of elves while travelling on her honeymoon. Her husband was murdered but she was let go. She died in childbirth, "not realizing he was not from his late husband, named him Anton before passing away. His father take care of the child and raised him, but he realized he wasn't completely human, altought not half-elven either." This is part I have trouble with. Anton is not a half-elf but the son of his mother's human husband. Making him not a bastard and fully human. So why does he have pointy ears and keen eyesight? You specifically state that he isn't half-elven but he looks like one by coincidence?

A bow fighter is good though. The Archer archetype seemed interesting the last time I looked at it. Might work for your character depending on how flexible you plan to be.

I'm definitely going with the goblin alchemist. I've tried the other concepts, and they just don't call to me on this one. No idea why.

Anyway, the concept:

Firewalker Boomlord

Firewalker is an unusual goblin; he's not actually evil. A dangerous menace to himself and all of those around him? Yes. A walking threat to the safety of communities everywhere? Yes. Insane and gluttonous? Yes. But not evil.

Firewalker was born a normal goblin, living in a pen with the other kids while his clan continued to menage nearby trade routes for food, shinies, and stuff to blow up. But long before Firewalker reached adulthood, the tribe was raided and slaughtered by a group of adventurers who were avenging the death of a beloved mount. When the adventurers spotted the children, they immediately stopped to debate, trying to decide on what to do with the younglings. Finally, they made the kindhearted, and some would say misguided, decision to adopt the goblins as their own children and try to raise them with exposure to good in hopes they would become better. The adventurers made it a point to also split up, so as to not concentrate the goblins all in one area and potentially allow them to revert to their evil nature.

Firewalker was raised by the group's wizard. Despite the magical instruction, he proved incapable of harnessing arcane power in the normal way. But his goblin nature meshed well with alchemy, and he took to the craft as soon as his parent introduced it. Soon he was producing his own explosives, laughing happily when setting off an explosion in the special area set aside for it, and beginning to experiment further in other uses of the skill. Finally, he was producing items that did more than just blow up, making his adoptive parent proud. And Firewalker did not show up as evil when one searched for his alignment.

But Firewalker was still a goblin, and no matter how well he had been raised he was still a force of chaotic destruction at heart. He never could be good. The community also recognized this, and as such he grew up mostly isolated. But his parent recognized he could still serve good, and suggested he take up the mantle of adventurer; in that career, he could blow things up and get paid and fed for it. Firewalker, seeing the community rejected him, does not see any other choice in the matter. As such, he is thinking best of where to travel and what places would have the best edibles or things to explode. He has no interest in rejoining his people; he has a better life now, with constant food and plenty of knowledge to make things blow up!

I am kinda expecting this one to get rejected.

@Valeria
thats simple: The woman though they where elves, but they are a band of half-elves :P after all, that was quick and mean, and barely died.
Sorry for the confusion, tried to make it brief and, not being english my home-language, I tend to fail at the details.

Want to try vanilla fighter first, never did one on pathfinder, but gonna take a good look at the archetype, just in case. Planning to take focus: perception as the human bonus feat to colour him as "quarterelf" and, of course, +2 racial to dex.

And as half-elves are long lived, they can be still around...

Edit: Just found:
Focused Study: All humans are skillful, but some, rather than being generalists, tend to specialize in a handful of skills. At 1st, 8th, and 16th level, such humans gain Skill Focus in a skill of their choice as a bonus feat. This racial trait replaces the bonus feat trait.

I see. I'm pretty sure the union of a human and half-elf is still a half-elf. I don't mean to invalidate your concept or anything. With all the racial options for the half-elf you can still be pretty powerful especially if you're willing to give up the human bonus feat.

You can build a vanilla fighter very well in Pathfinder. The advantage of it over the archetype is versatility. vanilla fighter gets bonuses to multiple weapon groups allowing you to be better than an NPC Warrior with bows, swords, shield, and daggers for example.

The archetype means you get only the bonuses with the bows but you can special new abilities. In the case of the archer archetype. This includes bonuses to perception, bow range, AC against ranged attacks, and you get the ability to commit combat maneuvers with a ranged attack, attack multiple targets in one round, and make bow attacks without provoking attacks of opportunity.

P.S. I understand about English not being your first language. It's pretty difficult to learn if you haven't grown up with of it. My advice is to write in Microsoft Word, use its spell check, and the copy and paste it into the website.

@MagusJanus Firewalker seems interesting. Do you have a character arc in mind for him. Something like him learning to control his impulses and how much fun non-explosives is?

Actually, I do ^.^

The idea is for him to eventually become convinced that a group is in his best interests and people appreciate items that help more than they appreciate fireworks.

He'll never hit the good alignments, but I think he'll end up decent ;)

Cool! Valeriya has a similar choice when it comes to total redemption. Your idea of mostly okay is interesting. I'm curious to see how they might play off and influence each other.

those are bad news for a naive country boy wannabe adventurer :D

I am drawing up a background based on what I selected in Hero Lab for his History. The Ultimate Campaign addon for HL is most useful. My next step is incorporating this into what I write for his childhood.

For the record, are we going to use the young template? Also, are we going with the 15 or 20 point buy? I am starting to build the crunch and am curious about this.

I feel we should discuss house rules at this point. Many GMs and players have little things they like to see, like an extra feat, extra skill points, and/or other ways they feel that they feel would round out the PCs better than the base rules give.

Basically, what would everyone like to see for house rules if any?

Still interested. Got a bit busy, but will try to work on a concept later!

For those who are not finding the game on the private forums, it is in the On-line Campaigns section under the name Enveloping Mist.

Took me a short bit to realize that it had a name. That and I looked at the links provided from before and traced them back to the section they came from.

By all means please share. Everything is up for discussion at this point. If this is to work everyone should participate in voicing their ideas.

I mean a list of the GM's house rules.

I help Rogues by giving them a good will save because they're wily and they're used to thinking slippery thoughts.

My big fix is allowing a sneak attack if an opponent is flanked even if the rogue isn't a part of the flank.

They also need an accuracy booster. Maybe a free agile weapon if they really need it.

Fighters need scaling feats and the removal of dumb prerequisite feats. Combat Expertise and Power Attack are just things that everyone can do without a feat. Mobility and combat reflexes are no longer prerequisites. A fighter only needs to take weapon focus. He gets the other feats in the chain for free at appropriate levels.

I'd also consider giving them another strong save based on fighting style. A dual-wielding duelist type gets reflex and a stalwart tank gets will for example.

Hey GM. I signed up for your site but I couldn't find a thread for this game.

@Hey, Valeriya, I think she had the answer:

Okay, going to work my way back, this might take awhile since I am at work. My apologies for being gone this weekend. Wife wanted to go out of town because that was her last week of maternity leave.

@Valeriya- Yes, both Juan and Vixen are correct. Just follow the link (Or this one)

As far as GM house rules, I tend not to change the core/base classes. They are all more or less balanced for what they do and the life time of their careers (so many games don't go high level, so the high level magic isn't as much of an issue). I do plan to give you guys perks here and there, but I can't say when/how you will gain them or what they will be. The reason: I look to see how the party and characters are doing and decide from there.

As far as stats and character generation go, i think the best option will be:
-20 point buy, No 7's can be purchased (Anything below an 8 must come from racial).
-You can be young, but no young template will be applied.
-Every Ability Score increase by level (4, 8, 12, etc.) you can increase two different ability scores instead of one.
-We will use Racial HP from the beta rules. Which are as followed:

  • If your race has a -2 Con modifer (or greater penalty), add +4HP to your hit points at 1st level.
  • If your race has no Con mod, add +6 HP to your hit points at 1st level.
  • If your race has a +2 Con mod (or higher), add +8 HP to your hit points.

The HP will make up for lower than high adventurer stats, not allowing a true dump stat, and will increase survival ability across the board.

Will get to the rest of the comments above shortly.

Edit: For those wishing to post your character (story and/or crunches), you can go here: Characters for Enveloping Mist You can also find it by going to "Online Campaigns" > "Gameplay" > "Characters"

When you go to post your character, make your own thread in the Character's "folder". This will be your own personal thread for your character. Fill free to add notes, have multiple spell lists (for prepared casters). You can even play around with possible build progressions there. Upload an image of your character if you wish (not a requirement). If you use a pdf created character sheet, you can upload your pdf as an attachment as well to your thread. I do prefer to read characters as monster stat blocks, but as long as all your info is there, write up your crunch in anyway that is comfortable for you.

Congrats on the baby, GM!

I don't mind not fixing the rogue or fighter. They're completely functional; there's no Truenamer equivalent in this game. That said, anyone who wants to be a monk should really play a brawler from the ACG. It's a lot better.

Question about HP mod. My race has a -2 con penalty. Through point buy I have it at 10 so there's no penalty. This means my HP should be d6 + 4 at first level and d6 + 0 afterwards, right?
