diviner wizard focused in enchantment advice

Advice

So I'm in the throes of self doubt on this wizard for ROTRL. After many iterations of our party we're basically hashed out, we have solid support everywhere but arcane/dedicated caster.

I'm a bit opposed to the usual conjurer route as wasting whole rounds summoning nearly irrelevant meat shields is both uninteresting and slows down play for few good reasons.

I've come up with an enchantment focused diviner opposed to evocation & necromancy (getting necromancy back at 9th). I'm a little worried that late in the adventure path there will be too many mind control immune baddies to really take advantage of my dominate person ability. On the other hand I know there will be giants just by reading the players guide and I know dominate person lasts for some time, so it's a pretty good bet to count on having one or two around.

I've always got the option to take a level of cross blooded tattooed fey/serpentine sorcerer if I feel it will help me at any point along this path, but since I've been told the AP goes to 17 any one level dip will cost me 9th level spells. That seems insane to lose.

So far I'm built as follows (we get an extra feat at 1st level):

Wizard1 Spell Focus(Ench), Greater Spell Focus (Ench), Improved Initative, Familiar: Compy (valet)
Wizard2
Wizard3 Craft Wonderous Items
Wizard4
Wizard5 Allied Spellcaster, Persistant Spell
Wizard6
Wizard7 Improved Familiar [Faerie Dragon (valet) w/Familiar Spell]
Wizard8
Wizard9 Opposition Research Discovery (Necro)
Wizard10 Extend Spell
Wizard11 Infectious Charms
Wizard12
Wizard13 Spell Penetration(?)
Wizard14
Wizard15 Spell Perfection (Dominate Person?), Quicken Spell
Wizard16
Wizard17 ???

I'm looking for thoughts and pointers on this. Keep in mind my familiar will be a faerie dragon who shares allied spell caster with me, so that's as good (or better) than Spell Penetration.

I'm into book 3 right now in RotR running a DM-controlled ninja. We have zilch for wizards or any sort of battlefield control, but we can really dish out the pain. It would be super handy to have a wizard, but we lost ours in Book 1. :/

While I appreciate the desire to do something different here, I think you're going to struggle with this guy. Enchant/Charm with 2 feats thrown at it at first level just isn't worth it.

I assume your group is using PFS Wiz rules, but I'd lobby for Scribe Scroll at 1st Lv if at all possible. It's extremely helpful at getting you into mid levels by having a good supply of scrolls on hand for both utility, and when you run low on spell slots.

I think a better plan for your Diviner would be to start out with Spell Focus: Conj, not for the Summon Monster suite of spells, but rather for the excellent support spells that will be far more useful through mid level play than the rather lackluster Ench/Charm spells. Later, you can pick up Spell Focus: Charm once Charm Monster and Dominate start coming on line. You can probably delay your SR busting feats until around 10th and simply rely on a minor meta rod until then.

Have fun w/ RotR man.

Scarab Sages

Enchantment is good at save-or-die magics. This means that you can take out individual foes pretty easily (hold spells), you can crowd control well (confusion, mass suggestion) and you can basically use mooks as summoned monsters (dominate, suggestion)

Divination is mostly about precision casting - for example you can use locate object to find the caster in the dungeon: put your spell component pouches/holy symbols in a bag of holding and locate the closest spell component pouch/holy symbol in the area.

This can be a very powerful combination if used wisely. In fact GM's tend to HATE diviners if they are well played.

This kind of character is a surgeon: Mooks are treasure for you to use as added muscle. Leader monsters are hunted mercilessly, and the scry and die tactic is your friend.

Have fun!

I ended up going with an EK/archer build instead for the same reasons stated above. The only drawback is the lowered casting progression, but it gains a lot of versatility.
