Caster for RoTRL

Advice

Hi, everybody. I need to create a 5th level character for rise of the runelords (my previous one died) and I need some help. We are a three man party and the other two guys (barb and archery ranger) are not optimized at all. I have to take the casting and secondary frontliner duty, all while expecting to carry these well intentioned noobs to the end. 20 point buy, no starting traits. Everything 1st party in the srd, plus psionics.
So, I was thinking of playing an aasimar dual cursed oracle (the +str, +cha variety, angelkin I think it is called) and taking Divine Intervention as soon as possible, but Im not sure about what mystery, other than Id rather not choose Battle. None of these are set in stone, though. Any ideas?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Every time I hear about a RotRL adventure party without a wizard, I cry a little inside. Free spellbooks figuratively fall out of the sky. It's a wizard's wet dream.

To stay on point, perhaps life oracle with fcb in channel energy? With life-link, you could actually provide a lot of sustain.

I highly recommend a Summoning Cleric.

Summons can offer more bodies on the field for the DM to direct attacks at. It also offers critters to add to damage. As well as the Critters SLAs and Magic they bring with them.

Sacred summons will allow you to Standard action Summon.

Your also going to need to fix the other guys problems when they come along. Buying scrolls is expensive to fix problems and learning the spells take up your spell list. This is also why I do not recommend an Oracle.

I do as well.

The thing is my previous character was a wizard, so I was trying to have some variety

You don't need variety you need to survive until higher levels. Thats the weakness of a Wizard.

First character is named Mark....now your new guy is Clark...or Mark V. 2.0

I would almost always advise a Master Summoner with either Eldritch Heritage Abyssal or Summon Good Monster over a Sacred Summons cleric, but for the bolded reason I second this idea.

I'd recommend Evangelist with Heroism subdomain for such a summoning build.

I agree on the Evangelist. I tend to like the Travel Domain myself but heroism is a top contender because of its Powers.

Sounds like you guys could use a Summoning Druid. You could also make a passable Summoning Witch (LOL it up with things like Vomit Swarm, Summon Monster, etc.) all while flying around Invisibly supporting your companions via spot Cure Spells, etc. Both are different from your Wizard and will help your group shore up the Action Economy problem you have when playing an AP with only 3 PCs.

Maybe a Kensai Bladebound Magus for more hibrid caster and frontliner or a Diviner Wizard with scorpion familiar for more initiative so you can always start first?
