Are their any character concepts that would work particularly well with this adventure? Are their any that should be avoided?
A friend may be running it, and I want to make a character that will make sense and fit well with the adventures premise.
I'd avoid making a Cleric of Tiamat...
Other than that I think any race and class combination from the PHB would be fine.
I think it works best if your character is of good or neutral alignment and has a vested interest in the world. It's more of an epic story as opposed to a dungeon crawl so having some epic heroes to go with it would be a good fit.
Set on the swordcoast?

The module has some backgrounds for players to use in order to tie in to the game.
I'd avoid using the drow race, since forgotten realms drow are pretty much feared and loathed.
It's a very open game, so all classes are given options that work. Honestly it will be more about your parties composition and play style more than module limitations.
