As you may or may not know, Dreamscarred Press's Psionic Bestiary is almost complete! For those of you wondering what the heck I have to do with that, hi - I'm Jade Ripley (please call me Knives), and I got signed on to edit and write monsters in the later parts of the Bestiary. I'm really excited to be part of this project, but we want to be absolutely certain that our monsters are polished, ready, and not going to accidentally massacre any unsuspecting innocents before we let 'em loose to the printers.

To that end, I'm here to ask you, our customers and backers, what your experiences with the already-released monsters have been like. How hard was it to incorporate them into your campaign world? To use them in encounters? Any data helps! Combat encounters, non-combat encounters, their use as NPCs or non-lethal obstacles, anything that they've done to affect your game is valuable and wanted. Have you had to make any changes? Noticed any mistakes in their builds/rules?

Your feedback, time, and custom are all very appreciated. Here's to getting these guys ready to roll!

Unless I'm being dumb - entirely possible - is there somewhere other than the WIP PDF that draws the (current) material together? I see a scattered pile on DSP's forum, and since I'll be getting this as part of my UP limited edition, I don't have the WIP purchased here.

You should have received the WIP as part of your downloads. Send me a message with your backer info and I'll get you a copy of the WIP. :)

It should be noted that a lot of stuff on the forum is outdated as well >.>

I finally was conscious enough to start proofreading. I won't likely have time to actually playtest anything before this goes off to publisher, but at least I can do this much. So here's today's batch.

DRP2201.pdf
PAGE 1
Truespeech (Su) description indicates this functions as tongues. The spell name tongues should be italicized.
Regeneration (Ex) indicates inevitables gain regeneration/chaotic yet all three provided statblocks have regeneration (sonic).

PAGE 2 (Automaton, Alpha)
BAB +4 plus Str +2 plus Size +1 = melee attacks at +7
Subtract two for Two Weapon Fighting penalties and the end result should be:
Melee short sword +5 (1d4+2/19-20) and short sword +5 (1d4+1/19-20)
NOTE: there is an extra space in the second short sword, right after the forward slash. It should be removed.

Languages line should have "; truespeech" appended to it.

PAGE 3 (Automaton, Beta)
Languages line should have "; truespeech" appended to it.

Leech Field (Su) reference to Psionics Unleashed should probably be removed or updated to Ultimate Psionics or both... or something.

PAGE 4 (Automaton, Gamma)
Languages line should have "; truespeech" appended to it.

BAB line should read:
Base Atk +15; CMB +26 (+28 bull rush); CMD 37 (39 bull rush)
Dispel Psionics (Su) should state what caster level this ability functions at. Hit dice is default but should be mentioned I think.

PAGE 2
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

Touch AC should include Size bonus so should be 19.
AC 25, touch 19, flat-footed 18 (+7 Dex, +6 natural, +2 size)

Charisma is used in place of Constitution for calculating saves and undead poor Fort so should be +3 plus 5. Will should be +6 plus 2 from Wisdom plus 2 from Iron will.
Fort +8, Ref +10, Will +10

In the Psi-Like Abilities section, there is an extra space inside the brackets for the DC for psychic crush which should be removed.

Undead have a 3/4 BAB progression. A 9 HD creature should have a BAB of +6
A Tiny creature suffers a -2 penalty to CMD and CMB, so those should be +4 and 21 respectively.
Base Atk +6; CMB +4; CMD 21

Undead creatures get 4 + Int skill points per hit die. This creature's Skills are correct but I cannot account for the Autohypnosis score. I'm probably missing a rule somewhere but I can't find sufficient skill points for this score to not just be Int (+3).

In the description of the creature, "psychic crush" (two instances), "slay living", "defensive precognition", "id insinuation", and "psionic blast" should be italicized.

PAGE 3
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

In the description of the creature, "ego whip", "psionic blast", "scorching ray", and "telepathic lash" should be italicized.

Psychotropic Aura (Su) "id insinuation" should be italicized.

PAGE 4
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

Melee line, +1/+1 quarterstaff should be italicized. Also, this creature appears to be using the staff to make an iterative attack, not using two-weapon fighting, so the attacks should be at +17/+12.

Skills... I count two too many skill points assigned. Maybe there's another way to work this allocation but I'm not seeing it.
10+3+2 Autohypnosis +15
7+3+2 Craft (any one) +12
2+3+3 Intimidate +8
10+2 Knowledge (arcana) +12
10+2 Knowledge (psionics) +12
9+3+5 Perception +17
4+3+3 Survival +10
10+3 Use Magic Device +13
=62 ranks

Treasure line, +1/+1 quarterstaff should be italicized.

In the description of the creature, second paragraph, "stomp" should be italicized, as well as "hammer".

PAGE 5
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

Since this creature has 6 legs, it should get +8 vs trip.
Base Atk +7; CMB +12; CMD 25 (33 vs trip)

Reflective Hide (Su) The "chameleon" power should be italicized.

In the description of the creature, "false sensory input", "control light", "control sound", "chameleon" should all be italicized.

In the description of the creature, "id insinuation" should be italicized.

PAGE 3
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

Fey have good Reflex saves, giving base 6 plus 2 Wisdom plus 2 Iron Will.
Fort +4, Ref +10, Will +10

Dodge and Mobility feats should have their B superscripted as bonus feats.

In the description for the creature, "dancing lights", "ghost sound", "ectoplasmic sheen", "concealing amorpha", "entangling ectoplasm", and
"telepathic lash" should be italicized

Just letting you know I haven't given up. I've got the next book a little more than half done. Should be resuming proofreading tomorrow.

Publisher, Dreamscarred Press

This is awesome and greatly appreciated, as once the dragons are done, I'm combining everything.

Dark Archive

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Charter Superscriber

When was the last time the WIP PDF was updated anyway? The one I've got here in My Downloads still shows March 20th as the last updated date.

Publisher, Dreamscarred Press

It should have 10 different releases in it.

It looks like the last one might not have gone through, although I remember sending it.

I'll see about resubmitting.

Dark Archive

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Charter Superscriber

Last time I downloaded it was still 9 files. I'll wait for the update to go through.

Publisher, Dreamscarred Press

OK, I've resubmitted it. Should be out today.

Sorry about that!

Dark Archive

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Charter Superscriber

No biggie. It's cool.

Downloaded!

What shall be the price of the final product?

http://dreamscarredpress.com/dragonfly/Store/product/pid=127.html

Publisher, Dreamscarred Press

Ordering now gets it for $10 - and gets everything as it's released (the only things not yet released are the dragons and a last, small release of a few remaining monsters that got finished)

The price of the final PDF may go up to $14.99.

Consider this to be fair warning. :)

[Compulsively chews nails as people get closer to the content he actually worked on/wrote]

DOOM

No, really, this was a neat PDF to read. While there's a lot of stuff I (think I) found, there's a huge amount of crunch here so it's quite understandable. These are flavorful and crunchy little (and not-so-little) monsters. I quite liked them.

DRP2205.pdf
FRONT MATTER
The word "wrought" is past-tense, therefore incorrect in this context.
"It is whispered that for all the horror a phrenic scourge might visit upon a region or community, or the strife a phrenic infiltrator may sow, or the sheer destruction that phrenic adepts and phrenic dreadnaughts may wrought–that
there is something worse than these–a Phrenic Matriarch: a Queen for the hive that is the Phrenic Hegemony."

PAGE1
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

Skills... I count two too many skill points assigned. Maybe there's another way to work this allocation but I'm not seeing it.
13+3+3 Escape Artist +19
13+3+4 Intimidate +20
13+3 Knowledge (arcana) +10
6+3 Knowledge (planes) +9
13+3+3 Knowledge (psionics) +19
13+3+2 Perception +18
13+3+3 Spellcraft +19
7+3+3 Stealth +13
6+3+2 Survival +11
=97 (should be 91)

PAGE 2 (Seer variant)
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

Precognitive Schism (Su) "defensive precognition" and "offensive precognition" should be italicized.

Skills line... same issue as base creature.

PAGE 2 (Kineticist variant)
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

Speed line is too high... Speed of Thought feat from Seer variant was dropped but not accounted for.
Speed 30ft.

Melee line damage is too high... Psionic Fist feat from Seer variant was dropped but not accounted for.
Melee 2 slams +9 (1d8)

Feats line is missing a comma between Greater Power Specialization and Iron Will.

Skills line... same issue as base creature.

PAGE 3 (Egoist variant)
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

Speed line is too high... Speed of Thought feat from Seer variant was dropped but not accounted for.
Speed 30ft.

Skills line... same issue as base creature.

Psychovampiric Aura (Su) I recommend against the usage of the phrase "but further ability score drain attacks from the aura" late in the description. This deals ability damage, not ability drain and usage of the word drain may lead to confusion.

PAGE 3 (Nomad variant)
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

Feats line, Ability Focus(baleful polymorph), the power in parentheses should be italicized. Also, I cannot find any reference to "psychoportive spear" so I'm not sure if it's a power, or ability I'm just not seeing somewhere. The creature definitely has the feat-count for two instances of Ability Focus, but I don't know what this should be... wrench for instance doesn't have a save to be boosted by this feat.

Skills line... same issue as base creature.

Psychoportive Boost (Su) "baleful teleport" and "wrench" should be italicized.

PAGE 4
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

Skills line... same issue as base creature.

In the description for the creature, sixth paragraph also references a psychoportive spear which the nomad version of the chiondaru does not appear to have.

PAGE 5
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

Skills... I count eight too few skill points assigned. Maybe there's another way to work this allocation but I'm not seeing it.
8+3+7 Climb +18
12+3+3 Intimidate +18
12+3+2 Perception +17
8+3+0-4 Stealth +7 (+15 in desert terrain)
12+3+2 Survival +17 (+21 in desert terrain)
=52 (should be 60)
Racial Modifiers +8 Stealth in deserts, +4 Survival in deserts

PAGE 6
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

Given the description of the behaviour and tactics for this creature, I suggest that it should probably be CE aligned not NE, but I am not the developer.

PAGE 7
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

Base Atk line has an extra comma after each dash. Both should be removed.
Base Atk +6; CMB -; CMD -

Engulf (Ex) Second sentence, sixth word should be "at" not "a".
"A larva swarm that has at least one creature in its space automatically begins burrowing into the victim’s flesh, causing 2d4 points of damage per round unless it succeeds at a DC 19 Reflex save."

PAGE 8
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

CMD should also indicate that this create cannot be grappled as it is under a constant slip the bonds.

Skills... I count one too few skill point assigned. Maybe there's another way to work this allocation but I'm not seeing it.
20+3+10 Acrobatics +33
19+6 Autohypnosis +25
20+3+7 Intimidate +30
20+6 Knowledge (arcana) +26
20+6 Knowledge (planes) +26
20+3+6 Knowledge (psionics) +29
20+3+5 Perception +28
20+5 Sense Motive +25
20+3+10-8 Stealth +25
20+3+5 Survival +28
=199 (should be 200)

Resistant to Transformation (Su) "fuse flesh", "crystalize" and "decerebrate" should be italicized.

In the description for the creature, "psionic blast" (two instances) should be italicized, as should "breath of the black dragon", "mind thrust", "fuse flesh", "inflict pain" and "fold space".

Not quite to my stuff yet, but I appreciate the feedback anyway. Math double-checking is good!

I just wanted to comment quickly that these two creatures are also especially cool. Their mechanics and tactics are unique.

DRP2206.pdf
PAGE 2
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

Skills... I count three too many skill point assigned. Maybe there's another way to work this allocation but I'm not seeing it.
0+2-5 Escape Artist -3
5+3+2-5 Perception +5
0+2-5 Sense Motive -3
3+2+3-5 Stealth +3 (+7 in water)
4+4 Swim +8
=12 (should be 9)

Leap(Su) I'd recommend adding a sentence to make clear (if) the movement from this ability provokes as usual. There could be some debate given supernatural abilities themselves don't. Also, the first sentence refers to "its psychokinetic force power". I'm unclear if this is meant in a generic non-keyword sense, with "power" meaning "energy" or if "psychokinetic force" is meant to be "telekinetic force", a power this creature actually has as a psi-like ability. I suspect this is intended to be "telekinetic force" (which should then be italicized). If so, I think the maximum distance should be 90ft.

PAGE 3
None of the alignment/type/subtype line should be bold.

As a swarm this creature should not be able to make or take combat maneuvers. Its CMB and CMD should be dashes.
Base Atk +13; CMB -; CMD -

Skills line... as a mindless magical beast this creature should have one skill point per hit dice, for 13. I think the Fly skill is too low. My math is 13 points plus 3 (skill because creature has a fly speed) plus 6 from Dex plus 8 because its maneuverability is perfect. I think the Fly should be a total of +30.
13+3+6+8 Fly +22
0+0 Perception +0

Not to sound like a suck-up, but the flavor text for this creature is awesome.

DRP2207.pdf
PAGE 3
Feats - I recommend changing the Weapon Focus(arm) to Weapon Focus(claw). No mechanical change, just... this creature doesn't have an arm attack.

Skills line... as a construct with +1 Int, this creature should have 21 skill ranks. I count 14. Unless I'm missing something, it should have 7 more ranks, somewhere. I'd be tempted to allocate into Acrobatics because the idea of a couple of these tumbling to flank tickles my funny bone, but Climb would also be a good choice. Alternately, max out Stealth and allocate the remaining four ranks somewhere else.
7+3+8-1 Heal +17
3-1 Perception +2
4+2+2 Stealth +8
14 (should be 21)

Not technically an error, but it is unusual to include the Construct Traits in the statblock as it is here, between Aid Overchannel (Su) and Freeze(Ex).

Trepanning (Ex) I would probably clarify the "attack roll" mentioned in the first sentence as a "claw attack", just to avoid any possible confusion as to if this should be a grapple attack, melee touch attack, or other. Nit-picking, but I've seen too many forum arguments over this sort of thing to not mention it.

DRP2208.pdf
PAGE 2
In the description for the creature, third paragraph, "shadow body" should be italicized.

Melee attack line, "bite" should not be capitalized.

Space/reach line is missing space portion.
Space 5 ft.; Reach 5 ft. (10 ft. with sting)

PAGE 3
AC line, touch and flat-footed numbers are reversed. Also a natural armor bonus is usually summarized with just the word "natural".
AC 19, touch 15, flat-footed 14 (+3 Dex, +1 dodge, +1 size, +4 natural)

Melee attack line, "bite" should not be capitalized.

Space/reach line is not required for the creature, should be removed.

Feats line, Conceal Scent seems to be indicated as a Bonus feat. If it's intended to be, it should be denoted with a superscripted B. I suspect it needs to be since the creature does not meet the prerequisite skills associated with the feat. If that is done, the creature is missing one feat. Psionic Dodge might be a reasonble choice.

Skills... I count three too few skill point assigned. Maybe there's another way to work this allocation but I'm not seeing it.
8+3+3+8 Climb+22
8+1 Knowledge (local) +9
5+3+3+4 Stealth +15
21 (should be 24)

Psi-Like Ability, second-last line should read "The save DCs are Charisma-based" instead of using the word "safe".

This creature should have a Special Attacks line including the Infect Host ability. I should also likely have an SQ line with Extend Tendril on it.

PAGE 4
In the description for the creature, third paragraph, "id insinuation" should be italicized.

Soulless (Ex) "mirror of life trapping" should be italicized.

Abilities paragraph, "intelligence", "wisdom", and "charisma" should be capitalized.

PAGE 5
Saving throws... magical beasts have good Fort and Reflex (+4) and poor Will (+1). I suspect I'm missing something really silly here, but I can't figure out how the statted numbers are derived. Here's what I get:
Fort +6, Ref +7, Will +2

Melee line, distraction should be removed, is on the Special Attacks line correctly.

Space/reach line is missing space portion.
Space 10 ft.; Reach 0 ft.

PAGE 6
Weaknesses line, "deathly curse" should not be capitalized.

Melee line. Slam should not be capitalized. Also, BAB (+4) plus Str (+4) plus pummel (+2) plus size (-1) renders slams at +9. Also, pummel grants slam damage as if one size larger. A Large slam is 1d6. Huge is 1d8. However, this creature has taken the Improved Natural Attack (slam) feat, granting another size increase so this should be 2d6. Finally, pummel only applies to attack rolls, not damage, so the slam should get 1.5x Str to damage, for +6.
Melee slam +10 (2d6+6 plus pummel)

Space & Reach line is missing space portion.
Space 10 ft.; Reach 10 ft.

Special Attacks line, "death field" should not be capitalized and pummel is already noted in the Melee line.

SQ line, "brilliant psionics" should not be capitalized.

This creature has no Languages line, but the last paragraph of its description indicates it can at least understand and speak Common and others. Something should be crafted on a Languages line to indicate to DMs that it does have these but can't communicate properly. Perhaps "Common, ghaarzon, 3 others; incomprehensible"?

PAGE 7
Senses line... this includes "detect thoughts", but this creature does not have such an ability. It should be changed to "detect intelligence". Since that is not a power or spell, it should not be italicized.

Special Attacks line, "neuropoison" should not be capitalized.

SQ line is unnecessary as detect thoughts is already present on the Senses line as discussed above. It shouldn't be capitalized if it stays for any reason.

Skills... the breakdown of where the Stealth score of +14 comes from is appreciated, but it missed a -4 penalty due to the creature being Large. Also, the bonus from Alertness to Sense Motive is missing. This area is otherwise correct. The breakdown should be removed and Sense Motive added.
Skills Perception +15, Sense Motive +5, Stealth +10 (+18 in undergrowth); Racial Modifiers +8 Stealth in undergrowth

PAGE 8
Melee line. BAB (+9) plus Str (-1) plus size (+1) renders bites at +9. I might be missing something somewhere, but I don't see any Weapon

Finesse or Weapon Focus, Psionic Fist or any of the other usual suspects to give the indicated value.
Melee bite +9 (1d6-1)

In the creature's description, second paragraph, "flight" should be italicized.

I'm sorry Jade; I won't be getting to your nasties tonight. As you might imagine, this takes a certain mind-set and amount of concentration to do and I'm fading fast tonight. I'll probably be able to d a block of two from the next book tomorrow during lunch, but won't have that PDF complete in an hour. Tomorrow night I run my Runelords campaign and Saturday I'm probably going to go climbing for the first time in about 18 months. So... I figure Sunday afternoon once I come out of the coma, I'll be able to resume.

Seventeen statblocks to go.

Then, of course, your dragons. Feel free to PM me if you've got a document or something you want me to go over on those bad boys after I'm done the existing releases.

You actually covered some of mine already. My fingerprints are all over the PDF you just did (with Brain Worm & Azrathid); it was my first, as you can tell with some of the math/editing/spelling errors. Thanks for the catches!

Question: what are the general alignments of all these Psionic dragons?

Feel the fury of my beta document link.

To actually address your question, the psionic dragons are N on the Good-Evil axis, but might be Lawful or Chaotic depending.

DRP2209.pdf
PAGE 2
Special Attacks line references "mind scream" which appears to have been renamed to "psychic shriek". This reference should be updated.

Feats line... while it's a (really) nice touch, Power Attack shouldn't list its modifiers. I admit I cheat a bit on statblocks personally with additional markup similar to this, but a published work probably shouldn't. Also, Ability Focus (psychic shriek) should probably have the "psychic shriek" lower-case.

Psychic Shriek (Su) Second sentence "wisdom" should be capitalized. Third sentence "charisma" should be capitalized. Fourth sentence "wisdom" should be capitalized.

Devour Sanity (Su) Two instances of "wisdom" should be capitalized. Lower-case usage of "strength" is correct, no alteration required. Just bringing that up in case a block-replace is done.

PAGE 3
AC line, a creature with a +0 Dex modifier does not need that noted, should be removed from AC breakdown.

HP line, "h" should not be capitalized.

Melee line, "bite" should not be capitalized.

Space/Reach line is missing a semicolon before the Reach portion.

Psi-Like Abilities line, "concentration" should be capitalized.

Feats line... Improved Natural Attack (bite), "bite" should not be capitalized.

Skills... I don't know how this works, to be honest. A Large creature normally suffers a -4 penalty to Stealth. With Dex +0 and a racial +8 bonus to Stealth, I'd expect to see a result of +4 but I suppose that it makes sense a racial bonus REPLACES the size penalty. I'll try to remember to find a precedent somewhere to confirm this.

PAGE 4
Feats... this creature should have a second feat as it has 3 Hit Dice.

PAGE 5
HP line, "h" should not be capitalized.

Space/Reach line is missing a semicolon before the Reach portion.

Psi-Like abilities line... "ML 8th" is missing the "th". Also, this creature's concentration modifier should be +11 if it's key ability is Charisma.

Creatures with grab gain a +4 bonus to grapple, should be noted in CMB. Also, the modifier for Bull Rush should be noted from the feat this creature has.
Base Atk +8; CMB +16 (+18 bull rush, +20 grappling); CMD 25 (27 vs bull rush)

Feats line... while it's a (really) nice touch, Power Attack shouldn't list its modifiers. Also, Improved Bull Rush as a bonus feat should be denoted with a superscripted B.

Gravity's Tyranny (Su) The reference to this ability in the third sentence should not be capitalized.

Skills... these are right except outsiders get to select four additional skills to make class, based on theme. I'd expect Climb and Knowledge(nature) to be so selected. It isn't mandatory, but fits.
8+3*+0 Autohypnosis +11
8+7 Climb +15
8+0 Knowledge (nature) +8
8+3+0 Knowledge (planes) +11
8+3+0 Perception +11
8+3*+0 Profession (Gardening) +11
=48 (should be 48)

PAGE 6
Initiative... with a +0 Dexterity modifier and no other modifiers, this creature's Initiative score should be +0.

HP line, "h" should not be capitalized.

Melee line... slam damage is assumed to be bludgeoning, does not need to be noted.

Space/Reach line is missing a semicolon before the Reach portion.

Psi-Like abilities line... "ML 8th" is missing the "th". Also, this creature's concentration modifier should be +13 if it's key ability is Charisma.

Feats line... while it's a (really) nice touch, Power Attack shouldn't list its modifiers. Also, Improved Bull Rush as a bonus feat should be denoted with a superscripted B. Toughness should be capitalized.

Gravity's Tyranny (Su) The reference to this ability in the fifth sentence should not be capitalized.

A Huge creature gets +2 to CMB and CMD. BAB of +8 plus Str of +11 should result in +21. Creatures with grab gain a +4 bonus to grapple, should be noted in CMB. Also, the modifier for Bull Rush should be noted from the feat this creature has.

Skills... these are right except outsiders get to select four additional skills to make class, based on theme. I'd expect Climb and Knowledge(nature) to be so selected. It isn't mandatory, but fits. Also, it looks like the Climb skill wasn't maxed out when it was expected to be. It can go two higher or two more skill points can be spent elsewhere.

Melee line, "bite" should not be capitalized.

Psi-Like abilities line... "ML 5th" is missing the "th". Only this area is confusing. The expansion psi-like ability is listed as having a 20-minute duration and that it's been augmented. The power is normally 1 min/lvl, which would be 5 minutes for a ML 5th creature. Augment option #3 is the only one that impacts duration and it changes duration to 10 mins/lvl, which would be 50 minutes. It's kind of unusual for a creature to have more manifester levels than hit dice, which together with the 20 minute duration noted suggest this creature is supposed to be ML 2nd. Only thing there is that a 2nd-level manifester can't augment expansion with option #3 because it's only able to spend 2pp total and the power costs 1 and the augment costs 2. I recognize this is a psi-like ability not a native power, but I wasn't aware the pp cost cap was allowed to be violated when using psi-like abilities. That'd suggest you can make a ML 1st monster throw a 20d6 crystal shard if you felt like it, which seems... unusual. So I confess to not being sure what should happen here. Since expansion is at-will I suspect the easiest thing to do drop the creature to ML 2nd, remove the augment asterisk and 20 minute duration and call it a day. Oh, and don't forget to check the concentration modifier based off of whatever the ML actually becomes. Right now it's correct for an ML 5th creature manifesting out of Cha (but not Int).

Skills... the math works out but the racial bonus to Stealth hasn't been applied. It should be Stealth +12

Racial Modifiers +5 on Acrobatics checks made to balance, +10 on Acrobatics checks made to jump, +5 to Stealth checks.

COMMENT: you know, these would be a really neat monster to include some stats documenting them as potential druid/ranger animal companions. They're a tiny bit high CR for that, but if their base stats denied them their psi-like abilities and bolstering hum it might work. Just an impression I had from reading the flavour text.

Worse, I've recently discovered that creatures get a modifier based on size as well. As a Fine creature, this one's should be another +8. So I think the correct end Fly score should be +38.

I...have to confess that I'd never played around with psionics before becoming involved in this project; in point of fact I've still not had the chance to play a psionic character in Pathfinder, and as you can see I've had to learn as I've gone. I can only hope I haven't done anything horribly wrong >.<

Thank you very much for the formatting & math catches on these.

It happens. Honestly, there's no way I'd bet money on my accuracy either. It's very easy to miss details, and after the nth statblock in a row they all start to blur and make no damned sense. I'm not sure who exactly at Paizo does this work on a Bestiary but I fear for their sanity. (Though I hear SKR had a monster spreadsheet for this.)

Still, you learn a lot when you actually sit down and reverse-engineer thirty or so statblocks.

I've not seen egregious "you can't do that" type errors anywhere in any of these creatures. It's all little bonuses missing here and there, and the natural result of copy & paste behaviour.

The truth is this: a +1 here or there doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. It's an admirable goal to have published stats as close to correct as possible, but it won't break the game if a couple mistakes slip through. What I'm most concerned about is Dreamscarred's reputation. People carve Paizo up enough when a number is off. I'd like to see DSP's releases as accurate as can be, to not earn a reputation as sloppy.

Anyway, you're welcome.

I've got to go back through the previous PDFs to check for two new formatting habits I noticed in the last one and then I can rest. For now. Climbing got moved to tomorrow so I won't be able to do the dragons until Monday. They're slipped into the playtest document I assume?

The example dragons (not all published just yet) are on their own document here: Sample Psionic Dragons.

The formatting may not be correct; Jeremy and I have been fixing them up as they've been added to the PDF release. 'm afraid that between life in general and recent spikes in stress levels I have not always been up on my format >.>

Any overall thoughts or opinions? I liked the idea for an animal companion entry on Ferax but other than that your posts haven't really talked about if you think the monsters are good/interesting/difficult to integrated/anything but the numbers.

Any overall thoughts or opinions? I liked the idea for an animal companion entry on Ferax but other than that your posts haven't really talked about if you think the monsters are good/interesting/difficult to integrated/anything but the numbers.

Well, I've dropped a few comments in line but I've been trying to deliberately act more like an editor than a customer, just to stay in as professional a mind-set as I could.

That said, all of these monsters are distinctly psionic. There's something about each one that speaks of a thematic commonality, so that's very good. None of them struck me as "why isn't this just a 'normal' monster?" That's excellent.

Overall things are weighted towards the lower CRs, which is where most people play, so that's good too.

Really, I don't think I could pick a favorite other than the comments I've already made. And... well... you already heard me gush over your cypher dragon design, so hey, you've got my vote of confidence.

I kind of wish I'd noticed this wasn't happening behind closed doors a long time ago. I'd like to see a couple more... tropes... adapted into a psionic flavor but time won't permit it I think. For instance, I've got an idea for a psionic angel (LG outsider) that is absolutely, positively opposed to doing physical harm. It'd have a weapon and shield for blocking purposes, but it would literally never take an attack with them (or lose its main abilities), but instead it would rely on psi-like abilities to "shut off" its enemies' minds, leaving unmarred flesh behind. Basically mechanically just a "tank" monster with excellent saves, PR, and AC, but something that has to be "cracked" open urgently before it explodes everyone's minds. Now... LG doesn't always make for a great monster, but when these go rogue and perhaps get mind-controlled... watch out!

It'd be nice to be able to offer paladins a psionic mount, and have a couple truly odd psionic familiars to offer wizards too, just to flavor the meal.

But the important thing is that the main roles are covered. Ultimately I like what I've read.

Generally speaking, Outsiders Are Not Psionic. And I know, I wrote Zurami, and it's really, really psychic, but that only sorta-kinda gets the handwave because of the nature of the Abyss itself, which is, shall we say, dedicated to the plurality of evil. The thing about Outsiders and Psionics is that Outsiders are often sort of...divine, in nature, let us call it. Psionics and divine magic come from the same kinds of energy, but directed in different ways. Divine magic is the result of the mind reaching out, where psionics asks you to reach within. Outsiders are the Without. They're bad at Within.

Prince of Knives wrote:

Got the doc. Thanks. I took a quick look and my eyes just glazed over. I just can't hit these tonight but I will as quickly as I can.

I guess. I've never really seen it that way but I can certainly see the viewpoint. Probably it's just that I've explained outsiders in general to be "creatures from another reality where things work a little different", encompassing elementals, fiends, astral travelers, folks that just putz around the multiverse, and indeed PCs themselves when they're on someone else's turf. I imagine Sigil as being chalk full of psions, for instance. But cosmology varies from DM to DM and from setting to setting, where I admit having smeared from Forgotten Realms with shades of Planescape over into Eberron and now playing in Golarion my cosmology is basically Play-Doh that someone's smushed into a ball of... stuff.

So I absolutely don't disagree. It's just sort of an "English isn't my native tongue" mind-set that leads me to feel a different shape to the flavour. If that mixed-metaphor makes any sense.

Fairly certain that deserves its own thread and doesn't belong in this one. I'm also fairly certain that's been addressed already.

I'm not sure why you continue to post this after I addressed it in detail, pointing out that much of your issue is going well beyond standard wealth per level recommendations and giving other core combination examples that do comparable or better damage.

And since you either ignored or didn't see the original reply, here it is.

The internet tried to eat it again, but I copied / pasted this time. I think I was putting too much in the "Quick Reply" box instead of doing a standard reply.

Alrighty, I had a chance to rebuild the character for this. NOTE: Formulas used were from the DPR olympics.

10th level elan cryptic (brutal disruptor) - all favored class bonuses go toward improving Disrupt Pattern damage.

Build:
Using the Elite Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) - anything above Elite Array is by definition high-powered and DPR numbers I'll be using for comparison from the DPR olympics used the Elite Array
Feats:
1st: Two-Weapon Fighting
3rd: Weapon Finesse
5th: Weapon Focus (Dagger)
7th: Improved Disruption
9th: Improved Two-Weapon Fighting

BAB: +7
Dex: 22 (15 base + 2 from Elan + 1 from level up + 4 from Belt)
Int: 18 (14 base + 4 from headband)
Str: 14 (13 base + 1 from level up)
Cha doesn't matter as far as I can tell...

Weapons:
+1 Agile, Speed Rapier
+1 Agile, Speed Dagger
NOTE: By using two +5 weapons, this character already goes over WBL limits for a 10th level character, but I did that anyway for the purpose of this DPR calculation. A 10th level character should have roughly 62k in wealth. Each weapon alone is worth 50k.

Disrupt Pattern Damage:
Base: 1d6+Int = 1d6+4 = 7.5 average damage
Elan Racial Bonus: +5
Enhanced Disruption: +4d6 = 14 average damage
Improved Disruption: +5 (+1 for each die, 5d6 total dice)
Bracers of Disruption: +2d6+2 (including the +2 from Improved Disruption) = +9 average
Total: 41.5 average damage
NOTE: 12 of that gets added on critical, but the extra dice do not, as they are added to the base attack, and extra dice are not multiplied on a critical. Meaning 29.5 is non-multiplied, 12 is multiplied

Attack Roll Modifiers:
BAB: +7
DEX: +6
TWF: -2
Enhancement Bonus: +1
Weapon Focus: +1
Total: +13

Damage Roll Modifiers:
Base Damage: 2.5 / 2.5
Agile Weapon: +6 / +3
Enhancement Bonus: +1 / +1
Disrupt Pattern: +40.5 / +40.5
Disrupt Pattern Added on Crit: +12 / +12
DPR by attack when enemy is active enemy type (only has one):
Total DPR with 6 attacks: 126.25

First Main Hand: 26.075
Speed Main Hand: 26.075
Second Main Hand (-5): 13.0375
First Off Hand: 24.525
Speed Off Hand: 24.525
Second Off Hand (-5): 12.2125

DPR by attack when enemy is not of active enemy type:
Total DPR with 6 attacks: 74.125

First Main Hand: 15.625
Speed Main Hand: 15.625
Second Main Hand (-5): 7.825
First Off Hand: 14
Speed Off Hand: 14
Second Off Hand (-5): 7

Total Gear On Build: 152,000 gp

In summation: by going over WBL by 90,000 gp, his DPR is high, although it is still not in the same level as the DPR builds of some of the most optimized builds from the DPR olympics which did not violate WBL and also had defensive requirements that this character cannot afford to meet. His chance to hit with his main attacks is only 50% due to his low BAB, TWF penalties, and being relatively feat-starved. His DPR takes a significant hit if his opponent is not of his active enemy type.

NOTE: I tried builds with and without Piranha Strike (the TWF version of Power Attack), but it was a significant DPR hit with Piranha Strike every time. Weapon Focus was a better option.

If you take away the Speed properties, his DPR goes back to a far more reasonable 76 when his enemy is of the right creature type, 44.5 when his enemy is the wrong creature type, and his WBL is 68,000 (still too high for 10th level). So, he still has no money to spend on any defensive options or consumables and his DPR is within the same range as paladins, rangers, barbarians, and druids, and well below the summoner.

Feel free to check my math, I tried to include everything :)

I realize that it looks like a lot of damage at a first glance, but the base of the class being average BAB without any bonus feats to spend, without proficiency in the "strong" weapons, and the penalties you get from going TWF... the end result is that his damage output is on-par with other characters, not head-and-shoulders above.
