Need advice on building an arcane duelist

Advice

Hi

I am looking for advice on creating an arcane duelist using a 15 point build, am in a party of 4 characters with a paladin, ranged ranger, a ranged rogue (yes I know) and therefore trying to get a support character for the paladin to help in melee.

If not a duelist any other ideas on a partial spell caster would be appreciated.

I was thinking of as a starting point human

Str 17 (15+2),
Dex 14,
Con 10,
Int 10,
Wis 8,
Cha 14

Feats Arcane Strike, Toughness

I am currently thinking about either lingering performance (drawback only really useful at low level) or intimidate prowess.

If a different race is better please inform me

For your second feat, I'd either go with Lingering Performance[its useful at all levels, its use is just less evident at high levels], or going with the Human Alternate Racial Trait that replaces Skilled and the Bonus Feat for a floating +2 to another stat and going with a Con boost, since 10 is too low and you seem to be going melee support.

Or you could go with the Angelkin Aasimar Variant and change around your stats to

Str17[15+2]
Dex14
Con13
Int10
Wis8
Cha14[12+2]

If you plan on Melee, you want at the very least a 12 in CON. Toughness only goes so far.

A Bard will always be appreciated in any kind of party, and since you have 3 characters all with a combat focus and 1 with a low accuracy rate, I'm sure they will all be thankful that you are providing bonuses to them.

Scarab Sages

why 17 strength? So you can bump it up to 18 at level 4? Not worth it, imo.

Everything else is fine, but drop that strength to a starting score of 16 and give yourself some constitution, and bump THAT up to 14 at level 4. You'll likely get WAY more mileage out of it than a meager bonus to attack/damage rolls, which you'll just use inspire courage for anyways.

Thanks I hadn't considered dual talented. That allows much greater freedom on the stats which I am struggling with

Personally I prefer using the core races

Liberty's Edge

Why Arcane Duelist? A standard Bard can grab Arcane Strike, after all.

The Feats are okay, but not stellar, Arcane Bond is actually a huge liability in out-of-combat spell casting (and you're the only one in the party who can do that) since you need to have a weapon in your hand to cast, and while Bladethirst is okay, you'll need to use one of the spells to give two performances to ever actually use it since Inspire Corage is so much better.

If you stick with standard Bard you'll lose out on a Feat you do want (because Arcane Strike) and some very situational ones, but gain such vast out of combat utility comparatively that I, personally, have never undserstood the archetype's appeal.
