Mundane Flight without Wings

Rules Questions

When creating a race, one of the options is Flight (Clumsy) for 4 RP. One of my players wants to make a race with that trait, but using boosters instead of wings (he's making a type of robot). Since he doesn't use wings, he said he would not have to make checks when crashing or when attacked while in the air. By the rules as written, I can see where he's coming from, but I feel that the flight rules were made without the thought of other means of flight besides wings and magic.

I'd like to ask what other people think about this. If I should allow it or be adamant that he can still fall while flying if attacked or he crashes.

"Left boot jet: Out. Impact Imminent."
I'd still require the rolls.

If he wants the mundane fly but not its drawback then it should cost just more than 4 RP.

RAW doesn't allow this kind of disregard of the rules, neither should you. Flavor is flavor is flavor. When it is mechanically different that's when you run into problems.

I'd think he'd still have issues with clumsy flight if he's using boosters in his boots. If he gets hit in a way where his feet end up above his head then then things could get very bad very fast.

I think the problem here is that by RAW, the flight ability in the Race Builder doesn't explicitly call out HOW flight is achieved. It just says that the creature has a flight speed and is clumsy.

I'd allow it, but it would depend on how the GM interprets it.
