So, uh...

Dog stats.

Skills Acrobatics +1 (+9 jumping), Perception +8, Survival +1 (+5 scent tracking); Racial Modifiers +4 Acrobatics when jumping, +4 Survival when tracking by scent

Can somebody explain this math to me?

Sure. Dogs have a 40 ft speed, which provides a +4 bonus to Acrobatics checks to jump (each 10 ft of speed above 30 provides a +4 bonus).

And here was I hoping that someone else thought the idea of dogs getting a bonus to jumping was odd.

Silver Crusade

Yeah so 1+4 (racial mod)+4 (movement rate) = 9

Dogs are amazing jumpers. I have a toy Manchester Terrier and I have seen him jump maybe 5 feet off the ground. It's actually pretty amazing.

Silver Crusade

I've also seen German shepherds jump about 7 or 8 feet (trained tactical dogs)

The only problem I have with dogs getting a bonus to jumping is that cats don't.. Several of the cats we have can easily jump 5 ft up (even from standing still).

Ah, right.

Y'know, we could make a halfling cavalier with a dog, give the dog Fleet and stuff a bunch, and just have it jump around the battlefield like a psycho jack russell terrier.

+1.

On a related topic: I've never understood why cats get short-changed in the Acrobatics department in comparison to dogs ...
