PRD vs. Ultimate Magic

Rules Questions

And probably any other book.
So I was looking for rules help on the Magus and how he got spells each level. I tried searching here and I didn't find what I was looking for, so I went to the PRD and I was very surprised.

The rules there are very different from the books I have.

PRD:
A magus may know any number of spells.

UM:
A magus begins play with
a spellbook containing all 0-level magus spells plus three
1st-level magus spells of his choice. The magus also selects
a number of additional 1st-level magus spells equal to his
Intelligence modifier to add to his spellbook. At each new
magus level, he gains two new magus spells of any spell
level or levels that he can cast (based on his new magus
level) for his spellbook.

Is the PRD more up to date than Ultimate Magic?

By the words, it certainly simplifies how the magus gets spells each level. I have never played a spell caster (or at least since 2nd Edition) and how the Magus got spells each level was confusing.

By the wording in the book, if I wanted to be a real dummy, I could make sure to get every single first level spell before I got second level. But somehow I get the impression that's not how it works.

Since the Wizard is written the same way, I looked at the Core book too and it is written the same way in the PRD.

Has it been simplified in the PRD across the board?

No idea what you're talking about.

From the PRD:

PRD wrote:
Spellbooks: A magus must study his spellbook each day to prepare his spells. He cannot prepare any spell not recorded in his spellbook except for read magic, which all magi can prepare from memory. A magus begins play with a spellbook containing all 0-level magus spells plus three 1st-level magus spells of his choice. The magus also selects a number of additional 1st-level magus spells equal to his Intelligence modifier to add to his spellbook. At each new magus level, he gains two new magus spells of any spell level or levels that he can cast (based on his new magus level) for his spellbook. At any time, a magus can also add spells found in other spellbooks to his own (see Arcane Spells).

Emphasis mine.

What exactly is the question?

The Magus has no limit to how many spells can be in his book; he must still acquire them via level-up, copying scrolls, etc.

At each new magus level, he gains two new magus spells of any spell level or levels that he can cast (based on his new magus level) for his spellbook.

Are these spells to be added AFTER 1st?
As I suggested above, could they be used to add to level 1?
What about levels with multiple spell levels like 4th and 7th, do you add to all the levels?
As with level 1, do you add your INT bonus?

And if you can think of anything I might have missed it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Here's how it works.

Your magus goes up a level.
You pick two spells that your magus is now capable of casting off the magus list.
Add them to your spellbook.

That's it. If you just hit 4th level, you can certainly use one or both of those for 1st level spells.

Okay, go ahead and parse that sentence again:

"At each new magus level"
This means every level beyond level 1. Since this comes right after a sentence explaining what you add to the spellbook at level 1, a "new" level for a level 1 character would be level 2.

"he gains two new spells of any spell level or levels that he can cast"
Each level beyond 1, then, you add TWO new spells to your spellbook. They must be of a spell level the magus can cast.
Therefore, a second level magus can cast 0 and 1st level spells, so these two new spells must be from level 0 or 1.

I have no idea what you mean by "levels with multiple spell levels"
At 4th level you can cast 0, 1st, or 2nd level spells. Therefore the 2 (two, count 'em TWO) spells you add to your spellbook must be 0, 1st, or 2nd level.

I think I understand now. You have to decide how weak or powerful you are at each level by the number of spells you get to use at that level.

You don't really "choose" the number of spells you get at each level. You get X amount of Y level spells per day, with a bonus for a high ability score. It shows how much on the charts. The 2 new spells are spells added to your spell book. So you have a greater variety to choose from.

Grand Lodge

Please note Spells in spell book is different to Spells Memorized. a Magus Prepares spells like a "Wizard" but with the magus spell list and magus spell progression.

the spells in your spell book you are a list of spells you can choose to memorize each day. not the spells you have memorized

essentially each level you obtain of Magus you Purchase for free two spells

so at 4th level you can know unlimited number of spells in your spell book assuming you have "purchased" extra ones with gold. but you can only memorize an amount listed on the table.

4x0th 3x1st and 1x2nd plus if your more intelligent you get bonus ones to memorize. typically 1 extra 1st etc...

I'm more and more confused by each post you make.

Each morning you choose which spells you want to memorize, i.e. fill into an empty slot to be used that day. Think of it like ammunition. Your magus "fits" X number of 1st level spells Y number of 2nd level spells, etc, per day, based on the spells per day chart.

The spellbook is separate. Think of that like your ammo pouch. Each level you gain you get new and exciting ammo to add to the pouch AND your magazine gets bigger.
