Other characters at a location attempting multiple checks to defeat item . . .

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

I just ran across the rule that "if a card requires multiple checks to defeat it, any character at the location can attempt one or more of the checks, as long as the character who encountered the card attempts at least one of them," and I want to make sure I understand it. So, for example, with villains where you have to succeed at first one check and then another, the player who encountered the card only needs to attempt (but not necessarily succeed?) at one check?

What about encounters where before the combat begins you have to succeed at a wisdom or perception or some other kind of check? Does that count as a card that requires multiple checks to defeat it?

We've played several scenarios without being aware of this rule. (Guess the rulebook is right about "easy to forget" rules.) I know it's going to affect our gameplay, and I want to make sure I understand exactly how it plays out.

1) Semi-yes. Yes he needs only to attempt one of the check, and no, if the card doesn´t exactly say that you only have to beat one check, then you have to succed at every check.

2)No. Because this is a check from the card, not a check to defeat the card. If you would fail one of those check, it doesn´t normaly mean that you lost the encounter.

Also, the character who encounters a card with two checks to defeat can attempt either one, they do NOT have to attempt the first one. Whoever attempts each check will take damage for failing the check. And you have to attempt both even if you fail the first one because there are consequences for failing each check (usually taking damage).

And like Fenris235 said, you have to succeed at both checks to defeat the bane unless a card tells you otherwise.

So, for example, if Harsk and Valeros are at the same location and on his turn Valeros explores and encounters Ripnugget and Stickfoot, who says

Ripnugget and Stickfoot wrote:

Before the encounter, succeed at a Stealth 9 check or the difficulty to defeat Ripnugget is increased by 2.

Check to defeat: Combat 9 (Stickfoot) THEN Combat 10 (Ripnugget)

First, Valeros has to attempt that Stealth 9 check. Harsk can't do that for him.

Then your options are:

1. Valeros attempts the first check then Valeros attempts the second check.
2. Valeros attempts the first check then Harsk attempts the second check.
3. Harsk attempts the first check then Valeros attempts the second check.

You attempt both, no matter what happens on the first. If either of the two combat checks to defeat are failures, Ripnugget and Stickfoot are undefeated. And whoever fails their individual combat check to defeat takes the damage for failing that check.

And of course, Val spends the whole time thinking "Can I throw this Dwarf to another location so he can use his power?" ;)
