The Mad Scientist

Advice

So, I am pondering an Alchemist for a game I am in as an alternate character should my Half Elf Wild Caller buy the farm.

I really should have made this guy instead of the Wild Caller, but such is life.

I want this fella to be a bit unstable, to say the least. So, Vestigal Twin, Tumor Familiar and the like are definitely getting in there somewhere. Ooze in a Bottle, Vomit Swarm, and the like will surely be part of it as well.

But, as I read over the alchemist, I have a few questions that I haven't been able to find the answers to, so I hope someone here has found them and can direct me to the location of this information.

Under Bombs, it says the range is 20 feet. Is this the increment, or the total range? In the Ogres guide, it implies that it is an increment, but I can't for the life of me find where it says so.

Are there ways to get spells as extracts that aren't on the Alchemists extract list? Again, in the Ogre's guide, it implies you can, specifically referring to a ranger spell. Is there some alchemist only way to do so, or is this something any caster class can pull off?

I am fairly certain I had other questions as well, but I am too tired to think of them at the moment, so I will post them later(I hope).

Any help directing me to the answers of these mysteries will be highly appreciated, and feel free to post any other zany ideas to make this zany guy even more zany! Thanks!!

P.S. If it helps any, I am going with a Mad Bomber idea, and he will have Alchemy as a skill for sure, as his Opus is to find out if there are scientific ways to copy magic. Thinking Human, and his traits will be Pragmatic Activator for Int to UMD, and Reactionary(?) for the bonus to Init. Point Blank Shot and Precise shot seem like good feats for first level. But, I may switch Precise shot to Splash Weapon Mastery...

Silver Crusade

As per my standard, check out this guide, which is awesome.

With that out of the way.

1. That's their range increment, so they go up to 100 feat for you to pull off some Hail Marry plays when it's 3rd and long and you need to move the sticks.

2.From what I've seen, you're basically stuck with your spells. On the plus side, all of your spells are awesome. You could get potions of certain Ranger spells (only 4th are out of potion range) and reuse them with Alchemical Allocation, basically giving you the benefit of them for the cost of a second level extract.

For ideas, there's a lot of conceptual design space in what you're doing. I'd honestly say Grenadier, but I say that all the time. For a concept like yours, I'd almost go with Clone Masters, since it feels right. Either that or Preservationist, which would probably be a better call if you're a bomber. Throw vials of summon monsters after your bombs and leave the enemy guessing just WHAT is inside that damn flask.

And no Ooze, you're not making Ninja Turtles.

For Bomber Alchemists, I'd strongly suggest being a Tiefling. Their favored class bonus damage (you won't miss the skill point & bombers are mostly ranged characters), bonuses to DEX & INT and Prehnsil Tail trait are awesome on an Alchemist. I also like Grenadier since all you basically give up is the Poison stuff for more bomb stuff and you can pick up longbow proficiency for when you run out of bombs. Splash Weapon Mastery is a stupidly good feat. Precise shot should still be picked up at some point, but since you're going to be targeting touch AC with Bombs, it's less of an issue immediately.

I was looking at the Preservationist as well. Purely for the idea of carrying around flasks with odd looking little critters twitching inside! LOL!! It looks like Planar Preservationist would be a nice addition to a Preservationist as well.

The Tiefling does make for a nice Bomber... Could also be a good reason he is somewhat insane, as well.

And what do you mean, no Ooze? That fits SO well!!

Get Deep Magic from Kobold Press when it comes out. Not only will it be great but there is a whole section of Alchemist extracts that will emphasize strange and crazy as well as useful.

Strange and crazy is the focus, here, so I will have to look into that! And an aside, but when I read your post, I suddenly had a vision of a miniature printing plant with kobolds swarming about! ROFL!!

Grand Lodge

Well, the Vivisectionist screams "Mad Scientist" to me, more than any other archetype.

Yeah, the Vivisectionist is certainly a mad scientist, but I don't want to go the melee route, I like the idea of hucking bombs and flasks of who-knows-what at the foes.
