I've also been seeing "damn, I missed my chance" and "I can still convince you otherwise, Ellen!" all over the last few hours, and it's really beginning to weather my patience.
On a positive note: I'm happy that she's happy! It's not easy for anyone to come out, but it's gotta be even harder when you live such a high-profile life.
I never understood this myself. I mean for most everyone I know the odds of getting Ellen Paige to switch hit* are about the same as getting Hallie Berry in the sack.**
It's more a case of "Oh, well that's a bit of trivia."

Read this this morning and laughed.
As for Kristen Johnson, she publicly announced in December to her fans, and did the interview circuit, about how she is battling lupus myelitis. Page came out because of the harm she felt her silence was doing to her.
So Johnson's physical illness is OK for people to say she's "brave", but Page's depression and self-worth isn't?

If you won't believe me and others here, ask them: "Do you think it helps LGBT kids to know that out adults like Page and Sam can be successful, talented, respected, and live happy lives with their same-sex partners?"
Well, I think that Sam's is far more important. He's likely to be a first. That's a big deal.
Page's is less so, simply because there are already far more examples of lesbian actresses to look to.Eventually, one hopes, it won't be a big deal at all. Because everyone will already know that people "can be successful, talented, respected, and live happy lives with their same-sex partners". But we're not there yet. Far closer with actresses than with football players though.
On the flip side, it's news because people are obsessed with celebrities. These people live in the spotlight. If she'd stopped hiding it without making some kind of public statement, that wouldn't mean no one would know about, just that it would be tabloid speculation, guesswork and rumor instead of actual news. Now it's out in public and there's no need for speculation. Which won't stop the tabloids of course.

Yeah, but the entertainment news magazines seem much more sympathetic about this stuff over the last decade or so. Several celebs have come out successfully, with little to any career ramifications. Ellen Degeneres really bravely led the way with this stuff. Neal Patrick Harris continues to be successful, and in fact seems more so. Jim Parsons (Sheldon Cooper on Big Bang Theory) is out. Despite it's polarizing effect in the Geek community, you can't argue with the fact he's one of the top paid network stars.
Makes me wonder why Tom Cruise and John Travolta continue to dig themselves so deeply into the closet. Although my guess is it has something to do with Scientologies views on homosexuality.
Glad Sam came out. It wasn't much of a surprise here in Missouri, though, where he played. But Columbia (along with Kansas City and St. Louis) is fairly liberal. It's just the rural majority of the state that is conservative.

so you're equating sexual orientation with illness?

Really? You don't remember her going up against the Juggernaut? She phased him into the floor and then you get the line "Don't you know who I am? I'm the Juggernaut, b%$#!!" That thing was played to death all over the internet for months.
Actually, that line in the film was a response to the meme, which pre-dated the movie by at LEAST a year. It came from some people re-dubbing an episode of the 90s cartoon.

If kitty is happy, yellowdingo is happy...and may yet see her in film version of xmen issue 143? Where kitty is home alone for Christmas when a giant monster breaks in to eat her.God I would watch the crap out of that movie. One of my all-time favourite XMen stories. Only the Dark Phoenix Saga beats it imo.
If they make it, then they will switch out Kitty for Wolverine.

But, why would it matter? They are people, just like everyone else.

My take on her coming out is that it is a good thing for both the LGBT community and our culture as a whole. I get what people like Matthew and Void are saying, that it shouldn't matter what someone's sexual identity is in our culture. And I wish that were the case here in America, I really do. But we aren't at that point yet. We still have a culture of people that still think of homosexuals as subhuman and sinful. The reason some people are making a big deal about this is because it's another positive role model for the LGBT community to look up to. And role models are good for any group to have, but especially one that is still being maligned both legally and culturally.
I do look forward to the day where this nation as a whole and just shrug and be accepting of one's lifestyle. But we aren't at that point yet, in many ways unfortunately.

Tom Cruise and John Travolta are gay?
So it's said. South Park did an episode where they locked themselves in a closet while people begged them to get out. John has had a couple of legal issues involving soliciting male massage therapists. I'll try to find ya some links later.
How're you holding up in New York?

Like I said above, role models can help so much with any group of people, especially those that are currently dealing with social and civil rights issues. Think back to when Jackie Robinson became the first black baseball player in MLB. Sure, he may have been just a baseball player and hell, I don't even like baseball and care little about it. But at the same time, I recognize him as an iconic role model. One that showed that anyone with the skills, talent, and determination could be like him, no matter what race they were. Race wasn't a determining factor in one's skill and he helped pave the way. So even if I don't care all that much about baseball, or sports in general, I still think it was great for what he did. In a way, he inspired my father to get into baseball, boxing, and later on, DnD and from that, my father was my role model for getting into DnD when I was young.
Likewise, it's good for actors, athletes, and other celebrities to come out and show that it doesn't matter what race, gender, or sexual identity you are. You are a person, capable of doing great things in your life if you have the drive and the skills to do such. And I think this is especially important for younger people who are so unsure about themselves and their future. If anything, them coming out is showing that LGBT people are just regular people like everyone else. And the more people feel comfortable coming out and the more people accept them for who they are, the more we'll see this attitude proliferate.

No, equating the depression and mental stress with physical illness. Since both fall under health care I think it's a fair comparison, despite the obvious differences.

I am jacking this quote to use at my gaming table, once the appropriate lead-in happens. Knowing the people I play with, I estimate 2-3 weeks tops. I can shave a week off if I don't insist on using it in character, but where's the fun in that?

Also, the title is a bit misleading. Kitty Pryde is straight. Ellen Page is a lesbian.
I'm sure that Pete Wisdom, Piotr Rasputin, Bobby Drake, and (Ultimate) Peter Parker would all attest to Kitty being straight.
Of course. A woman being in relationships with men implies she is straight. Because bisexuality don't real.

It was never, in any of the comics implied that she was anything but straight.

I saw Inception, with which I was largely unimpressed. Evidently I just didn't recognize her. She made no impression on me.
Oh, well.

The world has changed significantly, I'm afraid. But if there was a time to get into independent comics, it's now. Look for Manga, look for artist owned stuff. You'll find something to get you in your comic book store on Wednesday beyond laughing at awful big two storylines. And even from them, sometimes you'll find a graphic novel that isn't so awful.

I do actually read some manga, though I am MAD picky about it. Currently reading all of Jojo's Bizzarre Adventure.
