Newbie question about Linguistics

Advice

Scarab Sages

Kinda newbie in pathfinder played a bit ½ a year a go and was considering playing some again soon...
I got my character idea and background but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to take a rank in Linguistics(Must it be a class skill to be possible?)

Also is 1 rank in Linguistics= 1 Extra Language or would 2 ranks be needed?

My Tiefling(Ice Oni spawned) Need to have 3 LAnguages for my bg idea to work: Common, Giant & Tian.
I don't think it's possible to exchange Infernal for Giant(even though as far as I recall Onis typically speak Common & Giant)
So a rank in Linguistics looks to be the way out.

Am i allowed to take ranks in Linguistics without having it as a CS?

Anyone can take ranks. You just don't get the class skill bonus. One language per rank.

Yes.

All it means is that you don't get the +3 bonus as a class skill. And it's 1 language per rank.

Yes. Always can take any skill; Class skills only award you the +3 class bonus.

If you have an intelligence bonus, your character automatically knows that many bonus languages (chosen from the Bonus Languages section of the race description) and each point you take in Linguistics offers you a bonus language known.

Thanks everyone.
Will probably wait a lvl to get "know History" to get this Extra language

What the Class Skill does is basically add +3 points to your die roll even if you only have 1 rank assigned to the skill. I tend to get all Class skills at at least 1 rank to take advantage of that feature. It makes sense as well, as anyone can do some basic stuff, but very few can do some specific skill really well. I love using high skill-point builds like rangers, rogues and bards as they will get higher intelligence as well providing even more skill points. I always use the extra point for favorite class as a skill point.
My favourite character now is an Aasimar Paladin, that had a diplomacy adjustment of +10 at first level. Class skill +3, one rank +1, racial special on diplomacy and perception +2, bonus on high charisma +4 (I took a 16 that became a 18 after racial modifier) and a perception of +9 because of a trait that made perception into a class skill for me as well as adding an extra +1 -> +4 and a rank +1, racial special on diplomacy and perception +2, wisdom of 12 that became a 14 because of the racial of an Aasimar +2. And that character had no dump stats only bonusses.
skill points of paladin +2, for high intelligence +1, and an extra skill points for favorite class +1 totalling 4 skill points per level.
I always max diplomacy and perception but get a load of secondary skills based investing just 1 rank in other class skills so they all get a +4 bonus for an investment of just 1 rank.
It's nice to have some basic skill in swimm, climb, acrobatics, ride and other skills that give your character more flexibility for solving a problem invoving movement.
