Amazon has got a lot of folks complaining their system, out of the box, is defective. Hope yours works as promised!
I hope so, too. Several friends have already received theirs and report no issues.
If you scan through the Amazon reviews, most of the DOA reviews aren't verified purchases, and a bunch of them are suspect (like one star reviews that claim their PS4 burned their house down and only their Xbox and cat named Master Chief survived; or a black hole swallowed up their living room; or it melted their TV; or caused a screen flicker that gave everyone in the room seizures, etc.).
I have my fingers crossed.

Both the PS4 and X-Box One require large downloads when unboxed for full functionality. Something I can look forward to. We have a PS4 (in hand) and a pair of X-Box Ones (preordered) for my kids X-Mas. Yes, they are spoiled. They are college students. They have an ungodly amount of time to play games too. I, am jealous, not of the consoles (I play PC primarily and p&p of course), just of the time. Back to grading papers. And, occasionally relieving the boredom and preserving my sanity by peeking into the forums here. Another wild Saturday night continues...

Damn them :) Elder Scrolls Online is due out in 2014 for PC, Mac, PS4 and X-Box One. Apparently the PC and Mac players will share the same world while PS4 and X-Box One players are separated from eachother and the PC / Mac crowd. Nice that console players get to play, nice that PC / Mac players are all on one server. Too bad about PS4 and X-Box One players being segregated in their own corners.

Received my system in the mail today. Hooked it up, patched it, and played for an hour or so. No issues. Unfortunately (relatively speaking), it's my Xmas present from my wife, so I had to box it back up and hand it over to be wrapped :-( At least when I open it up later it'll be ready to use out-of-the-box.
I start my vacation mid-December--here's to hoping I get to open a present a couple weeks early!
I'm just happy I didn't get a defective console.

Now my only problem is the lack of titles.
I hate FPS and AC, basically am waiting for the first RPGs: the rumored sequel to Dragon's Dogma and Dragon Age Inquisition.
If Dragon's Dogma gets a sequel, I'll have to reconsider my decision to not get any console for this generation. But maybe there'll be a PC version this time.

For now I just have AC4 on my PS4. I bought 2 of them (one for my 20 yo daughter). She hasn't had time to set hers up yet.
The only issue I had on launch day was that the initial update to 1.50 wouldn't update from the start screen prompt. I had to do the workaround of going into the system settings, then choosing system update from there.
That said, Assassin's Creed was never a big deal for me, but I wanted something PS4 on my PS4 to look at. :P
I'm still heavily into WoW, and have been messing around (shamefully) with Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus on the PS3. I also have Batman Arkham Origins (PS3) on deck too, so I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to get heavy with AC4.
Had Uncharted 4 been a launch title, things would be different as my WoW guild would have likely seen me disappear for abit. I can't wait for Uncharted 4 and the Last of Us dlc. :)

Got mine launch day at 12:01 AM. I only have Assassins Creed 4, but have had no problem. I think I see a pretty radical graphical difference from my Xbox 360, but I will wait until my son comes over on Friday to verify that. (He has AC4 on his PS3 at his mom's house). Really pleased with my purchase thus far, despite always having been an Xbox guy before.

MeanDM |

But how is Pirate assassin?
I like it quite a bit so far. The ship to ship combat is much better than in AC3, and the main character is quite a bit more of a rogue so far than previous ancestors we have accessed. Pretty fun game. I think I might purchase Killzone or Call of Duty next week for the holiday, but I'm not sure as I'm also playing XCOM Enemy Within on my Xbox 360.

Anyone heard anything on the Blue ring of Death for PS4. There was an article on ABC but is it the same as the Red ring of Death for XBOX (meaning system is dead). Article had little information on why its happening or fixes?
Sony says about 1% will have the problem. It may be "fixable", they have instructions on that. So, not as bad as the RROD. They also say they are working with retailers to satisfy their customers.

I was highly disappointed.
Check out Review of PS4.
In service,
Well that was underwhelming...

Floated by who? Random people on the internet?
10% failure rate means that of the million consoles sold on the 15th, 100,000 are failing.
0.4% is 4000 which seems far closer to the amount of whining we saw.

First off, I am a Sony fanboy when it comes to consoles, I'm not afraid to say it. I love all things Sony when it comes to consoles and video.
That said "whining" as you put it is just flat out wrong to say when people spend $400 hard earned dollars on something that should work out of the box. I have to sympathize with people who were disappointed with the PS4 release, as well as the Xbox fans with their release issues as well.

Complaining to Sony is addressing an issue.
Posting about it on tweetbook or whatever s though it's the end of Western civilization? That is whining. Things have OOB failures. It happens. The sub one percent failure rate that seems to be the case is very good for a new product.
It sucks for those who get a DOA unit, but it happens and they need to suck it up and get contact the manufacturer or retailer and get a replacement.
This is the problem with social media. Even the most insignificant of problems get amplified by an echo chamber of ignorance and irrationality to the point where a 0.4% failure rate becomes 5%, then 10%, then 50%. Then the PS4 is nursing into flames and killing people pets and starting ears with Iran or whatever.
It all starts with a tiny handful of hyperannuated children whining that their new shiney has a blinking light and they'll have to play something else for a week or two.
Whining.

Sunderstone |

Yet here you are fanning flames with insensitivity.
People don't need to "suck it up" and shouldn't have to deal with the aggravation of spending all that money only to deal with large scale corporate customer support.

Whining.
I mean do you even "hear" yourself? People spend $400, then it's "oh well you can wait two weeks to use your shiny lit product."
I'll drop the commentary and just consider you on of those internet people "amplified by an echo chamber of ignorance" as you put it.

It's a game console.
Out of box failures happen. I'm incredulous that you think encouraging this sort of whining is a good thing.
Yes, these people need to gonad up and take their lumps. It happens. They're not out $400. Sony's not refusing to repair or replae the machines.
It sucks.
It sucked that I had to wait two weeks and because there was an error when I purchased my new car. I'd spent $27,000 and was actually without a car at all for a weekend. Did I go and post on twitbook or whatever about how Toyota iz epic failz and liars and money grubbing scum because I had to wait for something I need to do my job and pay my bills?
No.
Because I'm an adult.
So I have little patience for people screaming about how the world is ending because they can't play their new video game for a week or so because they were unlucky and had an out of box failure which Sony is making good on. Not those who had the failures. That sucks. I'm specifically those that whine about it.
I'm appalled that you think coddling this folks by encouraging their tantrums is the right thing to do.

People are being coddled way way too much in recent times.
So are companies, it seems, when people are defending a company who releases a shoddily built product.
Out of the box failures happen, yes. People complain when they pay for something, because they expect a certain level of quality. If that level of quality is not met, it is reasonable to be disappointed, and maybe somewhat angry at a company you have just given a good chunk of money to for what is essentially a brick.
If you hired me to paint your house, fix your car or your plumbing, or erect some sort of structure, I would hope that you're concerned enough about the quality of the product that you'd call me out on my bullshit if "1% of all your walls" were painted haphazardly, or 1% of your screws are loose, or...
You get the picture.
Is this particular case a huge deal? No.
But somehow getting your wires crossed and saying the people complaining they didn't get what they paid for are in the wrong...that's, uh, yeah. I don't have words for that nonsense. Well I do but they're rude and forum people don't like it when I'm rude.

A dude got his failed PS4 replaced in 5 days, including the weekend. Sony is efficient. They don't screw around.
And also, there is an enormous difference between you sending a letter to Sony saying "I'm concerned about this console failures" and to start whining calling them the worst company ever and behaving like an immature little brat.

Getting back...
Those of you with a console, what do you like about it? What (if anything) is a disappointment?
PS4 is a nice graphical upgrade. I'm not fond of the OS overuse of blue color but I'll download a theme when I get a chance, it would have been a nice option to change the UI color though.
Disappointment? Yes, but only with the fairly weak launch lineup. I'm not a big fan of Assassin's Creed but it was the only game I felt worthy of purchasing for my PS4 atm. The commercial trailer for Killzone has me interested now despite my not being a fan of that particular franchise either, as well as my opinion that FPS games are better on a PC with a mouse/keyboard combo.

Sunderstone |

I never compare any pc version to that of a console. I was just saying that some of these games for the PS3 still look incredible for a console, let alone a seven year old one to boot.
Take a look at the Last of Us outdoor scenes or even the window sill start screen. That's a hell of a lot of detail still pumping out of that little PS3.
