Why is there a feat that's Prerequisite is being a familiar yourself?

Rules Questions

I was always under the understanding that familiar's could not get feats. That all the HD they get are only for show and they dont actually have them, its only there for when spells/abilities need to use HD for effects.

So why are there two feats that require you to be a familiar to get but arnt on the familiar list of feats they get as they level up?
Both Spell Sponge and Familiar Focus have this.

You're right, familiars don't gain HD. However, they do get a certain number of feats based off their initial hit dice.

From the PRD:

A familiar is an animal chosen by a spellcaster to aid him in his study of magic. It retains the appearance, Hit Dice, base attack bonus, base save bonuses, skills, and feats of the normal animal it once was, but is now a magical beast for the purpose of effects that depend on its type. Only a normal, unmodified animal may become a familiar. An animal companion cannot also function as a familiar.

Kind of playing with semantics but if it retains the feats it had before becoming a familiar it couldn't have familiar focus as one of those feats because it would not qualify for it in the case of not yet being a familiar.

The feat comes from Pathfinder Player Companion: Animal Archive (PFRPG)

Perhaps there is information in the rules included within the book. We might be drawing too tight a circle if we don't include the source book likely to include rules supplements.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

From Animal Archive:

Animal Archive wrote:
This section presents new feats for animal companions and familiars, as well as for PCs that make use of these animals. Some feats might be available to other creatures that meet the prerequisites. Feats that are meant for familiars can be switched out for a familiar's default feats (as listed in the familiar's statistics) if the familiar meets the prerequisites. Such feat replacements must be made when the PC first acquires a new familiar, and-like all new feats from supplemental sources-the new feats should be approved by the GM before being integrated into play.

Another option is to be be a Beast-Bonded Witch.

@ Jorshamo
I believe that is the ticket.

This is why no question should be asked because you read a srd entry...if you don't have the source book you shouldn't ask questions as many are answered in the book. Just some thoughts from the grumpy guy who gets tired of rules quotesquestions from PRD surfers!

Another method would be to craft an expensive Homunculus.

And this is why you should read the most important rule before you ever hit submit post.

Indeed. No one is forcing anyone to post in a particular thread.

Could familiars retrain their feats?

I have updated the feats that can be applied to familiars on the d20pfsrd site to include the section about how familiar feats work. Thanks for pointing all this out! I had been wondering myself how that worked but never actually looked it up. :-D

What's the benefit of being snarky...or in some cases down right rude? We all come to these forums for advice or to shed knowledge, not condemn others for their questions or lack of knowledge...

And if someone lacks the funds to purchase all the books? Well, paizo CHOOSE to put everything up for free...

Or maybe Damiancrr owns the books but was suddenly struck with this curiosity while sitting in the passenger seat of a car, and decided to post from their smartphone/tablet...

either way... thanks Jorshamo for clarification!
