A use-activated magic item that cast detect evil would cost 3,000gp (lvl 1 spell x lvl 1 caster x 2,000gp x 1.5)

If such an item also gave you the paladin-only option of detect evil (1 move action for 3 rounds of study on one target). Would you expect the item to cost more? If so, by how much?

Double.

Initial response from me double.

More thoughtful response me 4x.

Best response whatever the DM feels is appropriate.

Creator would have to be a paladin, as well.

heh.. I am the DM in this instance. I was looking for some consensus before giving the ok.

may I ask what prompted you to bump it up to 4x?
I was thinking 1.5 or 2x so I want to make sure I'm not missing something

ooh.. nice catch. Thanks

4x was a number of reasons.

You are limiting it but getting the information in 1 move action vs 3 standard actions.... Quicken on detect evil (which would not do this) would cost a lot more.

So I thought it shoud be more then just a doubling. Now I know that with enchanting you can enchant an item at lower level then you... but Paladins get spell casting at fourth level so I thought a x4 also fit in what would be an appropriate cost. So that is where I got the Fudge factor I thought balanced the price most appropriately.

Finally the value of such an ability is going to vary from game to game... why I thought the DM should be the final arbitrator.

Be sure to decrease the wearer's Int and Wis to 3 and force their alignment to change to Lawful Stupid.

...Now I actually do want to see a cursed item like that.

LOL, Ipslore. I was also thinking these goggles sound like a cursed item. But instead of cursing the character, I just see them cursing the player and his friends and their GM - the guys at the table are the ones with the curse once this item gets introduced.

no no..

These are made FOR the paladin. It is so when she falls after being put into a catch-22 situation (as all Paladins inevitably do) she can still figure out who the villains are.

Nope, the only thing that can save a paladin from that is my new invention, Lead Goggles (patent pending). Take any ordinary pair of goggles, remove the lenses, replace with lead sheets. Presto! Paladin can't get into any more trouble. She can't see the evil farmers, can't tell when the party rogue is gorking the goblin babies, etc. A win/win for everyone!

My suggestion is to go with See Alignment rather than detect evil. You can even have different lenses or glasses made for each alignment.
