Kensai are proficient with all simple and one martial or exotic weapon. If they choose a simple weapon for their "weapon of choice", would they still get the one martial/exotic?
I would think that they wouldn't be, but as far as I can tell it doesn't have wording that allows you to pick a simple weapon normally. I would like to know why you would want to pick a simple weapon over a martial or exotic though.

I don't know that RAW a kensai can focus on a simple weapon. But if so, I am going to say no (because why is the guy who is really awesome with a cestus wielding a katana in the other hand?). Still, I suppose if I am unaware of the thing that says a Kensai can focus on a simple weapon, RAW yes they would get the free proficiency.
I might be missing it but where does it say they cannot use a simple weapon as their weapon focus?

Oh! I guess it doesn't say you must choose to use the weapon you choose proficiency with. Then refer to this
RAW:Yes. It is a class feature that isn't invalidated if you choose a simple weapon.
RAI:Probably not, though I would need to ask the author of the ability. Because why is the guy who is to smart to hit while wielding a cestus, able to pick up an Urumi and use it like a professional.

The proficiency states they get proficiency with simple weapons and a single martial or exotic weapon of their choice, and class features after that only use the term 'chosen weapon'. They never actually define what a chosen weapon is, but I'd think it would be the one you picked for proficiency. Its not insane or unreasonable to pick a simple weapon as your chosen one and get proficiency with an exotic weapon of your choice though imo.
