Then what is regular hide made of? Should I fear it like I do mystery meat?

Given the stupid stereotypes floating around the net about druid players, probably the flesh of human babies since it doesn't hurt nature or animals that way. :P

Well, didn't you ever wonder what happened to all those monsters that never 'made the cut' each time there was an edition upgrade? The ubue, the cloaked ape, the digester, the gorbel and all their lame little friends?

...Now you know.

Alas, poor gorbel. I knew him, Horatio...

The point of dragon hide was set back in 2nd edition:

Dragon Hide (2ED) wrote:
Dragon skin is prized by armorers with the skill to turn it into shields and armor, valuable because of its appearance and the protection it affords. Dragon armor grants its wearer an Armor Class of 4 less than the Armor Class of the dragon it was taken from, for a minimum Armor Class of 8. For example, armor from a juvenile brass dragon (AC O) grants its wearer AC 4. Dragon armor is supple and non-bulky, weighing only 25 pounds.

The oldest Red dragon had an AC of -11 (=21 in PF)

The oldest Gold, Shadow, and Amethyst dragons had an AC of -12 (=22 in PF)

At loosing 4 AC, this netted you effective AC of 17/18 with the usage of leather armor. [i.e. max dex, ACP, ASF, etc.]

In later versions, it was nerfed to just be masterwork quality.

Edit: forgot to add the base 10 in.
