Apologies in advance if this issue has a clear, readily available answer. I swear I looked, but sometimes I steamroll right by the obvious.

I have a mounted paladin/fighter, and I need to know what he can and cannot reach from the saddle. I can't seem to find it in the Pathfinder rules. In [url=http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20050208a]Part Three of Skip Williams' [i]All About Mounts[i][url],he writes "you use your mount's space and your own reach (measured from the part of the space you and your mount share)" to determine what the rider can and cannot reach.

Is this how it works for Pathfinder? Since a horse is 2 squares x 3 squares, and going from the horse's occupied squares, I take it that the rider and the mount share the same reach on the sides, but the rider suffers a 5' increment directly in front and behind, as such:

The mount is the bolded numbers. The rider sits between the 2's. So , for example, a rider's lance will reach the same square as the horse's natural weaponry in front of and behind the mount, to reach the 4's and 0's, but the rider will require an additional square on the sides to use the lance, or any reach '5 weapon. Conversely, wielding, say, a long sword, the rider could not hit an opponent adjacent to the horse's head or rear( squares #4 and #0, for lack of reach, but could reach an opponent adjacent to its sides.

Is this correct?

Any clarification is greatly appreciated.


What are you riding? A mastodon?

A normal horse, even a warhorse, is just a large creature. It takes up a 10x10 space but it doesn't fill up that space (just like your paladin requires a 5x5 space but he is not a 5x5x5 cube). The horse really only takes up a 10x5 space when it's standing still and not in combat, and even that is a stretch since from nose to butt a horse is not 10' long, nor is it ever 5' wide.

So no, your horse does not take up 2 squares x 3 squares. Just 2x2 and that is only during combat when you're spinning around trying to hit foes on all sides - you could ride it comfortably between two trees as long as there is a 5' space between them.

While in combat, your horse uses all 4 squares of it's 2x2 grid and you are assumed to be in whichever square you wish (because you "share your mount's space" - all of its space:

"A horse (not a pony) is a Large creature and thus takes up a space 10 feet (2 squares) across. For simplicity, assume that you share your mount's space during combat."

So, assuming you have a non-reach weapon, such as a longsword, you can reach every square adjacent to your mount at all times. In the following simplified diagram, 'm' is your mount and you share all those squares so you threaten all the squares marked 'T':

And you simply extend that scenario to the squares around those if your weapon has reach (but in that case, you lose the ability to threaten adjacent squares, as you always do with reach weapons).

Page 202 of the CRB in the Combat Section:

A horse (not a pony) is a Large creature and thus takes up a space 10 feet (2 squares) across. For simplicity, assume that you share your mount’s space during combat.

Pathfinder Changed the space some creatures take up and as such all large creatures (unless otherwise noted) take up a 2x2 square space on the map.

The flowing table takes the rules of reach using the 2x2 you now share with your horse:
M=Mount, you share all the squares of its space.
1=5 foot reach while mounted.
2=10 foot reach if you are using a reach weapon while mounted.
