How does an alchemist go about applying metamagic to potions they can make?
Through rods or otherwise?Trying to figure out how I can maximize a potion.
they don't =(
there's a few discoveries to extend potions you drink, or increase the caster level on potions. but there's very little to do for your own extracts.
in a home game, you can craft extend spell into a potion as long as the total spell level is 3rd or below. so extended barkskin is okay. but extended Displacement is not.
you otherwise can't maximize a potion.
but the discovery to treat the caster level as your alchemist level is good.
there's some items in UE that can help alchemists too. and some alchemist extracts that can boost potions.

Have another caster about with the meta-magic spell memorized to cast for you as you brew would work.
Yes, but the spells effective level must still be 3 or less, meaning you couldn't ever maximize a potion, except for a 0 level spell. And if you want to pay hundreds of gold for a maximized cantrip, go ahead.
Magic Items and Metamagic Spells: With the right item creation feat, you can store a metamagic version of a spell in a scroll, potion, or wand. Level limits for potions and wands apply to the spell's higher spell level (after the application of the metamagic feat). A character doesn't need the metamagic feat to activate an item storing a metamagic version of a spell.
