Recently been told a couple things in games, that I can't find a reference for, I was hoping someone could help me.

  • Recently I was informed that tieflings and aasimars now are considered humanoids. In addition to making the Scion of Humanity trait useless I've failed to find a source for this.
  • Also I played a Dwarven inquisitor and took the heavy pick for the X4 crit fun. I was told picks had been banned. huh?
  • And finally, I was told that Shadows can't kill anyone because their draining strength to zero doesn't kill. Again, I can't find any source.

To be clear, I believe all three are wrong, but I'm experienced in missing things.

They are humanoids in shape, but are still considered native outsiders for creature type and effects, as far as I know.

  • Also I played a Dwarven inquisitor and took the heavy pick for the X4 crit fun. I was told picks had been banned.

I haven't heard of this being "officially" banned, but I wouldn't be surprised if DMs banned or nerfed it to keep play balance.

  • I was told that Shadows can't kill anyone because their draining strength to zero doesn't kill.

Definitely incorrect. In their PF Bestiary entry (p.245 in my copy), it clearly says their Strength damage attack is "a negative energy effect. A creature dies if this Strength damage equals or exceeds its actual Strength score."

Normally any ability drain (besides Con) causes unconsciousness, but the Shadow Bestiary entry gives death by Strength drain as a special ability. It is the "specific trumping the general" per the Pathfinder design philosophy.

I had just reviewed the additional resources entries for Blood on Angels and Blood of Fiends. Blood of Fiends does state that Tieflings may only be half human. No mention of that for Aasimars. Scion of Humanity does not appear to be useless as it is an Aasimar Alternate Racial Trait from the Advanced Race Guide that adds the Humanoid (Human) typing with the replacement of Celestial language.

I have not seen anything on picks being banned for Dwarves.

The Shadows not killing someone with a STR of 0 or less is, as Adam indicated, totally incorrect. As per the Bestiary entry that Adam indicated, it is spelled out that the creature dies if the damage to strength meets or exceeds the strength score.

    5/5 *

I will third both of them.

Aasimar and Tieflings are by default "Outsider (native)" as type and subtype. Picks are a-ok. I mean, scythes, firearms and tetsubos are also x4 crit. Shadows can definitely kill you with STR damage. Not only that, but since you raise as a shadow, you need to get a resurrection and not a raise dead to come back.

Well it's good to know I'm not going crazy(ier). :-)

I'll continue to use my heavy pick and load up on lesser restoration. :-)

I guess someone was confused with (or by) allips.

  • 1) APG p169: "Tiefling Racial Traits Native Outsider"

    2) UE p29: "Heavy Pick"

    3) B1 p245: "Strength Damage(Su) A creature dies if this Strength damage equals or exceeds its actual Strength score."

As for #1 there is no reference to a change in the Additional Resources and the Blood of Fiends contains 11 uses of Humanoid and non of which indicate that Tiefling are humanoid but rather the opposite.

For #2 there is also no reference to a change in the Additional Resources list.

He is confusing the Core rules general rule (Core p16 "Strength score of 0 is too weak to move in any way and is unconscious" and the specific rule that Shadows have.

Most likely, someone misunderstood something they heard (like someone describing their Scion of Humanity aasimar), didn't verify for themselves, then told their friends (who ALSO didn't verify for themselves), who then told their friends... You get the idea. And then finally, we get to the one person who bothered to verify something someone told them: you. Kudos, Matthew. :)
