I've never actually played through Rise of the Runelords....

Advice

I was part of a game once that I joined part of the way through, and the DM threw out the campaign because the other PCs turned evil. Start to finish I have never actually gotten to experience it, and I doubt any of the groups I play with will want to, most of them prefer to run homebrew campaigns.

So my question is this, am I better off experiencing it as a DM and having one of my groups play through it, or should I try and find a game online to play it?

Also, I have been fiddling with online clients to test out and I have yet to find any I really like, is it worth even trying at this point?

Playing it as part of a party right now. It's ungodly levels of fun. There's a lot a variety in the storyline, like a murder mystery, a haunted house, and leading an assault on a captured fort, all within the first three books. It's worth playing through first before DMing it.

Liberty's Edge

Going though it now,Like tony the tiger says It's Grrrreeeeaaattt! especially if you like taking pain. My barbarian took 837 pts in a 12 hour session.

Definitely worth it to experience as a player

I'm playing through now, we've been on it about a year by this point. It's varied in story and play style. There's more than just killing the bad guy on moving on, and we've had a few surprises. I think for that reason, playing through first could be good so you'd be familliar with where things go and how a party may sidetrack it. If you don't play through before DMing, you'll need to spend more time and effort familiarizing yourself with things.

Have you checked Roll20? I've found it excellent for my purposes.

I GMed it, and finished it, some time ago (6 something months). It was a very good experience for me and had quite a lot of fun.
roll20.net is a very good tool.

Our group got started on RotRL a few months ago as a face-to-face game. When that fell apart, we decided to restart in online form. I've had a lot of fun with it so far, but we're still in Chapter 1.
