"We shall keep that in mind, though I think that is it for now. I hope you have a good day, see you later." Zelani said as she followed the other two.


The route leading out to Foxglove Manor is a 3-mile hike along a narrow path that follows the Foxglove River from the covered bridge where it flows under the Lost Coast Road to the dark sea cliffs overlooking the Varisian Gulf. Here, wild sea birds call out to a roaring ocean that churns hundreds of feet below. As you near Foxglove Manor, it almost seems as if nature herself has become sick and twisted. Nettles and thorns grow more prominent, trees are leafless and bent, and the wind seems unnaturally cold and shrill as it whistles through the cliffside crags. Even the sun, high in the sky, seems dimmer and somehow... forlorn. The path slowly rises, bending around a steep corner in the cliffs, and then Foxglove Manor looms at the edge of the world.

The strangely cold sea wind rises to a keening shriek as Foxglove Manor comes into view. The place has earned its local nickname of the "Misgivings" well, for it almost appears to loathe its perch high above the ocean, as if the entire house were poised for a suicide leap. The roof sags in many places, and mold and mildew cake the crumbling walls. Vines of diseased-looking gray wisteria strangle the structure in several places, hanging down over the precipitous cliff edge almost like tangled braids of hair. The house is crooked, its gables angling sharply and breached in at least three places, hastily repaired by planks of sodden wood. Chimneys rise from various points among the rooftops, leaning like old men in a storm, and grinning gargoyle faces leer from under the eaves.

In front of the house is what looks like ruined servants' quarters - a few ravens perch here and there on it, occasionally glancing your way.

"I don't like the looks of this place..." Rixa mutters, and looks around for any auras of the undead, drawing her wand and preparing to use it at a moment's notice

"This is...very different to the man I met. He seemed a dandy, interested in one of my allies for her charms as a...lady." Shalluk shook his head at the sad sight of the place before him, and examined it with his own strange vision, now reinforced with magic to replicate his old bodies ability to sense the living as well as the dead. His yellow eyes flashed with power as he examined...everything he could find.

Zelani nodded in agreement with Rixa as she cautiously walked towards where the ravens were perched. "It is rather unfortunate looking..." she said as she pulled her cloak tight around her, glancing nervously around for signs of the people, animals, or traps. If this was where...that person was hiding, anything could be here and the rogue would really rather see them before they saw her. Not very likely, she knew, with how things were laid out, but it was certainly her preference...

The moment Rixa focused on the environs of the house - without even getting close to it - it became apparent that the entire place seemed to be soaked in evil energies. The good news was that you had your answer - the bad was that it was unlikely any individual signatures would be picked up due to the sheer density of the aura.

As Zelani moves forward, it soon becomes clear that it's impossible to tell how many floors the outbuilding that stood here once had, for all that remains are the sooty, scorched stones of its foundation. To the east, a four-foot-wide stone well sits, partially collapsed, in the corner of the ruins.

Looking at the hideous, vile evil infesting the very material of the building, Shalluk shivered slightly. With the undeads typical fascination for the underground, Shalluk took a peek down the well - more out of the possibility of something emerging and as a possible route down if needed than any desire to do so. Of course, the well might just be a well. People did need drinking water. But Shalluk was familiar enough with stories to check.

Rixa recoils mildly seeing the pure... evil radiating from the entire house. She shakes her head to clear it of the energy suffusing it, and puts her wand away.
"What in Shelyn's name happened here? I've never seen anything like it. " she walks up to the door and checks if it's locked, listening for anything that might jump out at her. Just to be on the safe side, she holds her sword in her off hand as she approaches and as she tests the door, ready to grab it and swing should she be attacked.

Zelani quietly nodded in agreement with Rixa, the whole thing was quite strange. The druid looked at the ill-looking vines before looking back to the ravens. Such intelligent birds, it was odd to Zelani that they were the only sign of animal that she could find. The whole thing had Zelani tense as she moved to join Rixa near the door.


Moving forward, you notice two front entrances - although one of them is clearly more of a 'main' entrance than the other. As Rixa puts a hand on the handle, a burst of smoke wafts up, as if the house itself is reacting negatively to her touch. It also becomes rapidly apparent that the door is locked... although you did bring along a key...

Meanwhile, the well looks like it goes down several dozen feet, at least, and possibly more. To actually see the bottom, Shalluk would need to get down there.

Noting that the well was deeper than sixty feet at least, Shalluk moved to the door and looked at the lock. "Given he gave us a key, I suppose there is limited hope in sneaking in without him noticing..."

"Possibly watched us come up the path, but there is always the chance of catching someone off guard..." Zelani said quietly with an experienced but nervous smile. This 'Lord' had from the notes been watching her for a while. She knew it was likely mostly wishful thinking, but the rogue wanted to finally to feel in some sort of control. She observed what was going on around them while Zelani waited for Shalluk to unlock the door with that blasted gifted key...

Rixa continues looking around, guarding her allies' backs as they open the door.

The sound of the house straining and creaking gives this long, high-ceilinged room an additional sense of age and decay. The place smells damp, the unpleasant tinge of mold lacing the air ,as surely as it stains the wooden floor, walls, and furniture in pallid patches. Moldering trophies hang on the wall to the northeast: a boar, a bear, a firepelt cougar, and a stag, yet they pale in comparison to the monster on display in the center of the room. Here crouches a twelve-foot-long creature with the body of a lion, a scorpion's tail fitted with dozens of razor barbs, huge batlike wings, and a deformed humanoid face.

Shalluk glanced at the boar - the man had invited them to go boar hunting, after all - but his attention was taken by the beast in the centre. "That is an...impressive trophy." Drawing both of his Crossbows, Shalluk glanced around the room. He did so with his odd gifts, as he had no wish to discover the creatures here were undead...

Zelani tried her best not to pull faces at horrid noise, or terrible decaying smell, or the poor mounted animals...and whatever that thing in the middle was. She walked in quietly, considering the sight and smell of it for a few moments, "None of this is getting any better..." Zelani commented softly more to herself than anything as she looked around the space, her slow cautious steps at odds with her racing mind trying to take everything in...

Rixa warily enters the room, both hands on her sword. Simultaneously, she concentrates and opens her inner focus to search for magic in the room while also, gritting through the headache it caused, looked for anything that radiated evil, at least more than the house as a whole did.

As you move through the room, Zelani catches a whiff of what smells like burning flesh - though it doesn't seem like anything's on fire around here. Rixa's scan was the same as the outside - everything here radiated evil, and strongly enough to be noticed. Zelani and Rixa also - faintly - hear the sound of someone crying upstairs. There's a set of stairs to the right, a door to the left, and what looks like more of a hallway straight ahead.

"Nothing undead or magical, at least." Shalluk looked around uneasily. He didn't trust this place or anything in it. Did constructs register as magical or undead...?

Zelani cringes at the smell, turning around as she tries to locate where it was coming from before the faint sound of crying catches her attention. She slowly walks to the right to the staircase and looks up, listening and looking intently...

"I hear crying..." Zelani whispered, her caution and distrust waring with her concern as she considered the stories of this place she had heard...

"I hear it too, Zelani." Rixa says, softly, "But we need to be careful. It's likely nothing more than a ghost. I'm more concerned with this thing, whatever it is. Let me check something really fast, then we'll go."

The paladin concentrates for a moment, looking around for a small object in the room. When she finds something, she picks it up mentally and moves it over to the monster and drops it on its head.

Using Mage Hand to drop a small something on the creature's head.


The small object made a thunk sound as it hit the monstrous creature's body, then rolled off and hit the floor. There was no other response from it.

The stairway up was heavily shadowed - to see what else was there, you'd have to actually go up.

Shalluk looked at the others. He didn't hear the crying. Either his ears weren't as sensitive or it was not the kind of crying one heard via the ears.

With a deep breath Shalluk moved past the creature, keeping his crossbows trained on it. If it didn't animate and murder him he would move to the base of the stairs.

Zelani nodded in agreement to Rixa's words, watching as the other aasimar tested the strange creature trophy. She was very happy to see no reaction.

"Likely true, or a trap lure. Do we wish to finish checking what is left of this floor first, or deal with it?" Zelani considered quietly out loud to the other two as she weighed up their options.

"I'm not sure, but I imagine it isn't the best idea to be led around by ghosts. I say we finish looking through the first floor before we go upstairs." Rixa says softly, still keeping a slightly wary eye on the creature, whatever it may be.


A rather gruesome antique - what appears to be a mummified monkey head - hangs on the northern wall here, its tiny mouth gaping. A bellpull extends from the monkey's gaping mouth. A ratty throw rug partially obscures a foul stain of dark-colored mold on the floor. The monkey head radiates magic, but not evil. Ahead seems to be the dining room.

With a look of mild revulsion under his hood, Shalluk looked at the others. "Do either of you have the skills to determine what magic this has upon it?" At least it was only a monkey head...

The druid shook her head no at Shalluk's question as she slowly stepped towards the dining room as she tried not to think on how sad and horrible it was to do such a thing to a monkey. She peered around as she went...

Rixa studies the head, her eyes glowing a vibrant violet color.

Rixa was not able to determine the properties of the monkey head. As her Paladin powers noted, however, it didn't seem to be evil the way most other things here were - its magical nature might have insulated it from outside influences.

Ahead, a mahogany table surrounded by chairs sits in this room. Twin fireplaces loom to the west, while to the east, stained-glass windows obscure what could have been a breathtaking view of the Lost Coast. Each window depicts a monster rising out of smoke pouring from a seven-sided box. From north to south are depicted a gnarled tree with an enraged face, an immense hook-beaked bird with sky-blue and gold plumage, a winged centaur-like creature with a lion's lower body and a snarling woman's upper torso, and a deep blue squid like creature with evil red eyes.

Shalluk stared at the windows for a moment. "I...would assume they have a meaning, a significance. I really must start reading more once all this has been done." Instead, he checked the windows for magic, and to see if there was anything else in the room.

Zelani followed Shalluk's gaze as she slowly walked through the room, "You're welcome to use my library if you like" she said as she considered the room...

Despite your careful perusal of the room, you're not able to note much about the chamber that you haven't already seen. The windows had no aura of magic. There are doors to the north and south here, as well as the two doors back in the connecting hallway. All are relatively high-quality wooden doors, and unlocked.

Sighing deeply, Shalluk pointed south. "Search the ground floor clockwise before moving up the stairs? Perhaps we will find some clues to this place."

Zelani nodded in agreement, heading towards the southern door. She paused to listen to it for a moment, opening it if she heard nothing on the other side or sensed any traps... not locked didn't mean other deterrents were not in place.

Rixa nods as well in agreement, "What do we want to do with the monkey head? It has some form of protective magic on it, though what kind, I'm not sure." She then follows them as they continue their search of the mansion.

"I dare not move it until we know more," Shalluk replied, moving towards the door. "Until we know more it can remain where it is."


This library features two chairs, one of which lies on its side, before a stone fireplace. A scarf, its reds and golds contrasting with the drab palette of the room, is draped over the side of the fallen chair. A book sits facedown on the floor between the chairs. A stone bookend, carved to look like a praying angel with butterfly wings, lies on its side in the fireplace itself. A door exits to the west.

Running his eyes over the room, Shalluk got a sinking feeling as to what was likely to be found. Still, he had been wrong in the past. And it was better safe than sorry. He opened his eyes, looking for anything that might be dangerous or useful.

If nothing came up as dangerous or magical, and nothing more interesting presented itself, Shalluk checked the stone bookend for blood.

Rixa continues her search of this room, looking for magic, but not bothering with evil, already knowing what the result would be.

As Shalluk moved towards the bookend, there was a sudden flare of necrotic energy-

-and it seemed like it was gathering around the scarf. More than that, however, you couldn't tell in the scant moments available to you.

Shalluk looked around, eyes gleaming. "It does not appear to be a spirit or undead, but necrotic energy. A spell or trap, perhaps." The crossbowman looked around, uncertain as to what to do. He backed away from the scarf, hoping to avoid whatever was happening.

"That fits in what we've seen of this...person so far." Zelani replied to Shalluk. If it was a magical trap she might be able to do something, but she had little skill in dealing with necrotic energy specifically.

"Odd that just the chair, the bookcase, and this book seem to be significantly disturbed in this place so far for as long as it has meant to be abandoned..." Zelani pondered outloud as she began to move to check the fireplace.

Rixa keeps her eyes fixed on the energy as it coalesces, interposing herself between her allies and the new potential threat. She holds her sword at the ready, unsure of whether or not this new apparition is a genuine threat or a distraction.
"Be careful. I don't want you two getting hurt. That's what I'm here for." she says, a smile touching her face.


As Rixa moved forward, the scarf darted into the air and immediately began to twist around her throat.

Will DC 16: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 9 + 1 = 27

After a few moments, however, the scrap of cloth stopped moving - and it fluttered to the floor, lifeless once more.

Holstering one of the crossbows at his hip, Shalluk reached out his hand. Using his Telekinetic abilities he lifted the scarf, to see if anything happened. "I...hope...whatever happened, it is now done with."

Rica pokes the scarf with her sword, and tries to study it for any reaction, ”Well, form a moment that was interesting, but I guess we were worrying for nothing.”

Probably too much to hope the rest of this place is similar... Zelani said as she watched Rixa poke at the scarf, running her hands over where her kapenia sat at the her waist before the druid moved from the fireplace to the western door.
