Halflings and exotic sling ammo

Halflings are proficient with slings but what about exotic sling ammo (sharpstone, spongestone, etc), are they proficient with it or do they have to take an exotic weapon proficiency?

Do you have to take an exotic weapon proficiency with ammo? That seems a bit strange. Do you have to take feats for both an exotic weapon AND its ammunition?

There is no proficiency feat for ammo.

Only weapons require it.
