Source? Because it's supposedly an in-joke between the artist and his girlfriend, and I've seen no evidence that supports your claim.

Actually those are the same runes on the cover of every book... they're the word "MATRIX", converted into Japanese characters, then mirrored.
I'm aware of the katakana (couldn't figure out what they said, though, cool), and they're definitely not what's on the staff in Side Jobs and Ghost Story.

Oh, did they change it for those two? I don't have the covers anymore, I tend to lose them.
Source for mine, at least for the books prior to that, since JHR felt it necessary to argue =)
Bilingual Bonus: See that picture on the main page? The characters on Harry's staff are Japanese; specifically, the are the katakana for "matorikkusu", which is how the Japanese would write "matrix", but as you would see in a mirror.

You don't spell fire. It is a basic pictograph like this:
That's the exact symbol representing the light radiating from and heat associated with something like a camp fire, or maybe a small bond fire.
Harry's staff uses a sequence of symbols to represent azz-crackling, hyper-energy combat fire. I thought that was obvious.

Since we're talking about The Dresden Files already, does anybody know when the most recent book is coming out in paperback form?
I only have 3 books left to read before I'm out of new material I'm very interested in, so it better be soon.
Amazon has it listed as September 3rd. Then two months later Skin Game comes out.
Do you have a library nearby? You could get the hardcover from it, maybe? Cheap as free!

If I run out of other things to read before then I might do that. I am currently working on the 5th book of Butcher's Codex Alera series and already have the 6th one downloaded on my iPad. I also downloaded Dan Brown's Inferno. When I'm done with those I'll have to see how long it is before the last book of Wheel of Time comes out in paperback and then of course Cold Days. I'd also like to read more of the Black Company series by Glen Cook and finish James Patterson's Women's Murder Club.
I go through 15-20 books a year, but I have also been known to re-read books I haven't read in a few years. If I ever get off my lazy ass and build the bookshelf I bought around Christmas, it would make it a lot easier for me to figure out what I have, what I still need to buy, and what I want to re-read.
