Rules Questions


I tried to use channel negative energy to heal my skeleton and harm my foes at the same time and a difference of opinion about the rules came up. I keep saying negative energy is negative energy but the rules say an evil cleric may inflict damage OR heal undead. Is the "or" exclusive and therefore types of use are separate procedures or are these just two uses which can be employed singly or at once?

When you channel energy, you must choose to either target living creatures, or undead creatures. A single channel will not target both. So you can not heal your skeleton and harm your living foes at the same time.

Channeling energy causes a burst that affects all creatures of one type (either undead or living) in a 30-foot radius centered on the cleric. The amount of damage dealt or healed is equal to 1d6 points of damage plus 1d6 points of damage for every two cleric levels beyond 1st (2d6 at 3rd, 3d6 at 5th, and so on). Creatures that take damage from channeled energy receive a Will save to halve the damage. The DC of this save is equal to 10 + 1/2 the cleric's level + the cleric's Charisma modifier. Creatures healed by channeled energy cannot exceed their maximum hit point total—all excess healing is lost. A cleric may channel energy a number of times per day equal to 3 + her Charisma modifier. This is a standard action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity. A cleric can choose whether or not to include herself in this effect. A cleric must be able to present her holy symbol to use this ability.

Sovereign Court

You can only use channel to do 1 thing at a time. If you channel negative energy this means you can

1) Channel to heal undead OR
2) Channel to harm living

If you channel negative energy you can

1) Channel to heal living OR
2) Channel to harm undead

If you have taken the feat that lets you do both, you can only choose a single of the above options.

Just like the positive channelers, you have to make that choice. Either heal the undead, or harm the living. (or vice versa for the positive folks) With just straight channeling, the two for one deal died with 3.5.

I believe there is an archetype that gives it back in exchange for halving it's power.

Another option would be a mass inflict spell.
