What I choose to believe is irrelevant. Paying the same price for a fountain drink as I would for an entire case of the same product is ridiculous.Technically, you aren't even paying for the soda; you're paying for the cup ;)
Source: I've worked at a movie theater before.
Does that mean if I walk in with my own cup, then I can get it filled for free?

At least in Florida, its legal for you to bring your own water into the theatre.
The real questions that people should ask themselves before coming to the theatre are, "do I really need a $7 soda?", and "is it going to create real, amicable social change to complain to the person behind the counter about the crooks that she/he works for?"
The answers to both are no, go watch your movie :)

Well, there's the failure in their marketing structure. I'm there to watch a movie, not to buy cups.
I wonder if there are movies in Abrams' Star Trek universe? Have holodeck programs replaced them, making entertainment fully interactive? Would theaters survive in an economy without money?
Theatres make around $0.30 to the dollar on every seat that they fill, if I remember correctly. In fact, they have to pay the movie studios for the privilege of playing their movies.
The problem aren't the movie theatres; the problem is people like Tom Cruise wanting to get paid millions of dollars for his awful acting, which causes studios to charge extra money for the theatres to play the movies, which causes theatres to charge more for concessions.
