Hi everyone,
They say it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become a master at any skill. I've been GMing in various systems for 23 years and I would like to break into the world of game design. So basically you got something you need some design work on post it here, just bear in mind what I'm posting as guidelines:
Presently I'm willing to do:
These I will try to turn around within 24hrs
-Items: Give a basic idea of what you want including slot if applicable
-Monsters: Give me a CR target and a basic concept, link if its from a RL source.
These I will do my best to turn around within a week
-Archetypes: What class, what kind of powers you want
-Villains: CR target, what kind of stats or classes, what kind of group
-Location/encounters: I will not stat everything out for you or draw a map but I will give you basic ideas, monsters you might want to use, traps, and potential developments. I need a setting/terrain type, CR target, number of players and basic make up of group- also how much a challenge you want (easy, tough but beatable, near TPK)
Bear in mind
-Please spoiler long posts
-If you have a complaint, I will respond to PMs but bear in mind I'm practicing here I owe no one anything.
-I'm not a mind reader, the more info you share the more likely you'll get a happy result.
If you appreciate my work please check out my article(s) in Kobold Press' blog this is the first entry more to come next week.

Thanks for your time GM Solspiral.

There is this but I can agree its hardly an exciting archetype. I'm thinking of mixing some of the oracle's stone revelations in and maybe adding a new combat style grappler for the ranger's bonus feats. That along the lines of what you're looking for?

Hey Solspiral, thanks in advance for taking the time to do this! I have a request for an interesting location for an encounter I have planned.
I'd like to make a tough but beatable encounter for the group against the sister of one of the PCs, who has been turned to evil in the years since she last saw her sister. The sister should be a feyblooded sorceror with the wildblooded (I think) trait of having an animal companion - a giant wasp that she rides. (I'm thinking that however the sister is defeated, the wasp might make a nice bit of 'treasure' for the PC whose sister it is.)
The party currently consists of:
the abovementioned PC, a lvl.6 human rogue,
a lvl.6 elven shadow sorceror,
a lvl.7 human ranger,
a lvl.7 human diviner/human paragon (5/2)
a lvl.6 human antipaladin about to fall from ungrace,
and a number of ex-PC NPCs, including:
a lvl.6 human bard (a romantic interest of the PC rogue that I plan to have the sister kill),
a lvl.6 half-elven fighter,
a lvl.6 human cleric.
I plan for the sister to be in a vast Horde camp (all kinds of goblinoids, fey and giants), which she is in control of for her masters.
To make this survivable, I need some clever help. I'd like for the PCs to be able to sneak into the camp and deal with the sister without bringing the army down on their heads; turning the sister against her former masters will be a possibility. But I need it to be a close thing, and for the terrain to help them.
Any ideas? Thanks again!
Edit: They may all be lvl.7 by the time they confront the sister. I guess I'm looking for tactical advice as well as a location.
DarthPinkHippo
The map I'm using is at Papers & Pencils.
If you want to also do some encounter/location work, I've provided the map already, but ideas for how to stock it would be very welcome. The party is made up of the core 4 classes, with the fighter having a WBL-breaking sword, a combat-oriented rogue, a squishy cleric of Desna, and a universalist wizard. They are all level 4, and the game has stuck to just the CRB and Bestiary for the most part. I would like it to be tough but beatable.
Thank you so much for your time!

Tunnel Stalker (Ranger)
While most rangers dedicate themselves to the diverse environments of the surface world tunnel stalkers have mastered the cruel environment of the Nar-Voth. To these rangers the darklands wilderness represents the ultimate expression of nature, survival of the fittest.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: The Tunnel stalker is proficient with all simple weapons and martial melee weapons, light armor.
Unarmed strike: As a bonus feat the Tunnel stalker gains Improved unarmed Strike. This replaces standard ranger weapon and armor proficiencies.
Eyes in the Dark You gain 60' darkvision this replaces first favored enemy, if you already have darkvision this extends it by 60' you also gain light sensitivity and if you have that already the penalty doubles.
At 7th level you gain
Ranger combat style option: Grappler If selected at 2nd level you gain improved Grapple, every feat with Improved grapple populates this list. This replaces the Bow Combat style option.
Favored Terrain At 3rd level you gain favored terrain underground, you may not select another environment.
Stone Stability At 8th level you gain stone stability oracle mystery as though your were a stone oracle four levels lower that your ranger level. This replaces 2nd favored terrian.
Earthglide At 13th level you gain the stone oracle mystery of earthglide treat your oracle level as your ranger level for purpose of duration. This replaces 3rd favored terrain.
Steelbreaker skin At 18th level you gain the stone oracle mystery of stonebreaker skin. This replaces 4th favored terrain.
Design Notes: Its a little powerful in its intended environment but weak anywhere else. You trade good ranged abilities for better mobility and close up fighting, also the daylight spell sucks for you. Spell casting wise I debated replacing ranger list with earth based spells but that would be allot of change for an archetype, in fact just a little too much.

Designer notes: OK I resisted the urge to give a normal hyppo with the hungry template twice. Instead I gave you a hyppo with the fey animal template (with some liberties taken), replaced the capsize ability with constant magical flight and death curse with the spell like ability to absorb spells! Should be a suitable challenge.
This creature resembles a Hippopotamus with translucent skin that appears pink that floats in the air, on its back are diminutive blue butterfly wings.

New Feat:
Ioun Familiar
This feat allow you to transfer the life and abilities of your familiar into an ioun stone.
Prerequisites: Ability to acquire a familiar, must have a dull grey ioun stone, ability to cast vampiric touch.
Benefit: By using vampiric touch you transfer the soul and arcane bond you possess into the dull grey ioun stone. Effectively this makes your familiar an unbound* ioun stone. The ioun stone is treated as a familiar in terms of the ability bonuses granted, familiar abilities granted on the familiars abilities table and it has the ability to fly (speed 80 ft' maneuverability perfect) it can make a slam attack at the same attack bonus as your living familiar the damage is now 2d6+(wizard's int bonus.) It has the same statistics as it did in life in terms of AC and HP but now has a hardness of 15. If destroyed the master can either chose to create another Ioun familiar or gain the benefits of an improved familiar.
*The ioun stone need not float around you to convey its benefit it is in all ways like your familiar when it comes to range in which it can function.

I seek a spell that will punish people who try to scry me.
Didn't specify willingness to do spells but heck why not?
Level Target? Preferred school?
Prolly call it scry shield:I'm thinking maybe blindness as a retribution, 5th level cast as an abjuration spell. Scryer gets a save, failure = blindness, save means not blind but scry it cutoff after one round and caster becomes aware of scry attempt. Does this align with your intent?
MrSin
Hey, so say a player doesn't like the oracle because it has a wierd entry cost of having your leg broken or similar such and such. I've been brainstorming a few ways to fix this, but I want to see someone else take a swing. Think you wanna try it?
Simple version: Oracles curse, what could replace it?
GM_Solspiral RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32
Malicious Scry Shield
School Abjuration; Level cleric/oracle 5, magus 4, sorcerer/wizard 5, Domain (Worshipers of Calistra can sub this for a domain spell at 4th level)
------CASTING--------------
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
------EFFECT---------------
Range self
Duration 1 hour/level
Saving Throw Fort Negates Blindness and Damage; Spell Resistance yes
------DESCRIPTION----------
Malicious Scry Shield acts as a Non detection spell with the additional effect of burning out the eyes of the scryer should they fail a fort save. This has the effect of blinding the scryer and dealing 1d4 con damage.
Design notes: basically non detection isn't that big a spell nor is blindness but blindness targets strong save for casters, this doesn't.

@Krisam came up with a tale I think you'll like.
The sister is a crossblooded sorc with Sylvan and Verdent bloodlines, design wise she has the Wasp companion, is 8th level, and has Boon companion feat. She fell in love with a Druid who was charged to protect a one of a kind magical tree from the first world. He also has an animal companion in the form of an awakened bee swarm.
Once every 1,000 years or so these trees bloom and release a special pollen that has a few effects. First it creates a telepathic bond and all creatures within a fairly large radius effected by the pollen are in a hive mind serving the tree. Second they creatures are under the effect of a charm monster like effect and will be under the effects of a rage spell against anyone they believe a threat to the tree.
Your players will have to figure out how to avoid breathing in the pollen, approach the tree without triggering the horde of defenders, and cut away the first world tree's bloom. In order to do so they will have to get past the sorceress, her druid lover, a mated pair of forest drakes and the animal companions of the couple. The tree itself lets off a confusion effect, and of course the battle is on a timer as the other minions of the tree are closing in.
Should they cut the blooms off the area will stop being pollinated and the effects wear off. The blooms themselves are very valuable to alchemist who can make very potent potions from their stamens.
I hope that works for you,if so I'll give you some more materiel.

@MrSin Oracles are very powerful and their curses can be circumvented in some ways by powers selected. I'm not sure I'm 100% behind replacing the oracle's curse which is a merit flaw is sort of part of what balances them. I have an idea of an archetype where perhaps instead of a standard curse the oracle sees too much (basically huge boon to sense motive) but unfortunately the secrets she sees spills unbidden from her lips (equally huge negative to diplomacy checks which creates enemies for her.)
The classic oracles were always isolated and their insights could make one uncomfortable at times. Run it by your player if they liek it I'll make it so.

@DarthPinkHippo
Our Pink Bloatapotamus (named Fareek) feeds on magic to keep his majestic bulk and like mundane hyppos enjoys wading in warm rivers. The dungeon provides both as a magical chest has been bleeding magic in the underground river for centuries, this also puts off ample heat.
Within are a few Thassilonian magical geegaws I'll leave to you to define. Bottom line the magic is having some fun effects.
1) Magic + Mud = Mudmen, they are throughout the dungeon, the Pink Bloatapotamus isn't harassed by them anymore and it will often bait new visitors into a mess of mudmen.
2) It animates dead as skeletons, apparently trolls once died here in great number because most of the skeletons are Troll skeletons
3) There are also a haunt in the "library" area of the map Fareek will use [url=http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/haunts/cr-1/dance-of-ruin-cr-3] he has also led skeletons in there so while the PCs are dancing their strength away something immune to the haunt is there to stab them.
Between his perfect fly and dimension door ability and strong knowledge of the dungeon our friend Fareek does everything in his power to dissuade your PCs from finding the treasure that is the source of both magical and heated water. Even if the PCs say there's something in the chest that could save lives the fey will not be reasoned with and will harass them into as many dangers as possible before doing true battle. When that time comes he will try using charm person to turn an enemy to ally (targeting the rogue), use create pit on any heavy armor wearers, and hallucinatory terrain to keep the advantage. If reduced by half hit points or if his wings get clipped he will use dimension door to flee to the river which due to his magic eating nature provides fast healing 5. HE will hide in the water until restored then try goading pcs into the water where he has an advantage.
Under no circumstances will he willingly leave the dungeon and will fight to death to keep the PCs from ruining his magic water.

Thats really just another curse. Its curse light. Its like the legalistic curse that already exist but it demands something negative happen during roleplaying, rather than restricting.
Curses add to the oracles power really. Depends on how you use?see them. A good example is tongues or legalistic, which don't hurt that much, or lame which people dip happily into barbarian. Thats just my opinion though, I think we're a little different. I'll keep working on my own alternate class for the moment.
GM_Solspiral RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32
@MrSin I get where you're coming from it is another curse of sorts, one that makes the character a plot magnet. There's a mechanical element but its light and tied to a quasi-prophetic power, mystical character insight but they say it aloud which will make plenty of NPCs uncomfortable and possibly hostile.
It would make the Oracle either a class that prefers isolation or somewhat dependent on others to explain what he oracle is and protect the oracle.
I figured your player's complaint was along the lines of why does being lame have anything to do with being an oracle. So I dreamed up a curse/power that fits with the lore on oracles more or less. Powers would be a part of it but I figured have you run the idea by your player. If that's not your bag so be it everyone has a different aesthetic when it comes to design.

Yeah, I like your idea really. Fluff wise you make it sound really attractive. Just not quiet a replacement for the curse. Like I said, I have my backup to bring up to players and GMs if it ever comes. WIP because I'm also trying to give players options beyond revelations with it.
GM_Solspiral RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32
Crunch I was thinking something like this:
1st level gain a +5 bonus on sense motive and under constant effect of death watch spell, must make a DC 15 check to attempt to bluff, bluff is not a class skill.
5th level gain effects of constant see invisible spell and detect evil/good depending on alignment -4 on diplomacy as your tendency to speak the truth is off putting this replaces will save to speak falsehoods, you have overcome not being able to lie but you're not used to it.
10th level gain the effects of tongues spell permanently, diplomacy penalty reduced to -2 you've learned to dilute your insights in flowery words but you still tend to be a little too blunt for most folk.
15th level gain effects of true seeing you suffer no diplomacy penalty anymore you're an expert on disseminating and just seem normal despite your incredible insight.
Design notes: Yeah I just made a new set of oracle curses. Not exactly what MrSin asked for but I think if presented in the right way his player might accept that the fluff and crunch at least make more sense for something called the oracle. We shall see.
Even if its not something he or his player like's I'm kind of proud.

@GMSolspiral
That is great! I love it all! I now can't wait to run this :D Also: I now have the perfect excuse to give the wizard a rod of wonder (can't remember if that's the correct PF name). Thank you so much.
I had fun writing it, let me know how it turns out. The object is to grind them a bit so that in the final fight he has the biggest advantage. You have 3 dimension doors use them when needed and try to make the climax happen in the water. With its swim speed ability to hold its breath, fast healing and the sick stealth score in water this is where your critter wants that fight to end.

How about a more realistic crafting system. :)
I take no issue with the present system but define your objective better.
Are you looking for a more adventurers might be willing to use this system (PC friendlier) or were you looking for an actually more realistic system where crafting actually requires more skills and those skills require different attributes.
I'm not really looking to practice rewriting existing materiel I though the presently I'm willing to list was pretty clear, but heck I'll entertain the notion. Looking to practice.

I did write a rpg once, rewrote all of Palladium's Robotech over to d20 modern. Also redesigned VtM's Chicago by Night politically, and crafted a detailed campaign that can be reproduced by anyone as I wrote it up, using encounters from the books and NPC's gleaned from Kolchak the Night Stalker tv series.

Wow, this is an incredibly cool and interesting thread. Firstly, thank you for all your work so far Solspiral! Really great stuff.
I had a couple of ideas I'd love to see your take on!
-An exotic, balanced sword/staff that the player can use two handed to gain reach, or one handed, but without reach.
-A racial supernatural ability for a race of magic eating vampires that allows them to drain magic from spellcasters like a vampire would drink blood, and if you have the time or inclination, a player race version of the ability as well would rock.
-A non-magic scope item for crossbows/guns that allows them to spend their move action to gain a bonus to hit.
That's all I've got, Thank you in advance for any time or suggestions you put into this, and again, great stuff so far!

This is great stuff, but I have two concerns: 1)the tree and druid angle sort of take away from my theme of redemption of the sister/corruption of the PC. The sister is there to lead the horde army for her masters into an invasion of the human lands, which means she also couldn't stick by the tree that long. I would prefer to keep the limelight on that particular PC rogue and her sister for this encounter, so I don't think I want to add another relationship into the mix.
2) It seems like it would be difficult to deal with the tree's protectors without rousing the horde camp to come to the sister's aid - they are all around her 'base.' I'm also unsure of how to communicate the tree's significance to the party before they jump headlong into battle.
I'm sorry I couldn't use your awesome idea (though I love the awakened bee swarm; may use that somehow). If you're not fed up with the idea yet, I'd love to hear another idea. I guess I just want some interesting terrain that might give the sister an advantage (so they don't all whale on her at once) and some tactics I might use for her and her horde guards (any kind of giant, goblinoid or fey), while keeping the rest of the camp from charging in for a TPK? A tall order, I know, but I have faith. ;)
GM_Solspiral RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32
I figured the theme of redemption would still sort of be there because the sister is still going to have a heightened sense of emotions and not quite know how to feel as she sorts out her decision for the past several months/years she was under the influence of the tree. If you wanted her to try and convert the sister a poisoned dart with the mind pollen in liquid form might make for a dramatic moment.
I created an excuse for a horde of orcs, goblins, fey and any other craziness you want working together with the pollen concept. With the hive like mind they are easier to bipass because they have specific orders, I liked the idea of the orcs and goblins basically being like a bee hive each given tasks and they stick to those tasks, getting new orders takes time and effort so they can get juked. I also figured the "solve" of cutting the blooms off the tree created an out for you as a DM if it got out of hand (burn'em off with fireball ect.)
If you want a different direction I'll take another crack at it just answer the following questions.
-You mention masters who does the sister work for? A demon, a wizard, an evil god? What is that villains objective?
-Obviously the sister wasn't always evil and can be turned back to good, why did she go evil in the first place? Was she an older sister that protected her younger sister from sexual abuse? Did she turn evil because she's greedy at her core?

Staff Blade
Weight 5 lbs.
Description
When inert these potent weapons sppear to be quarterstaves coated with a matte blue tinted metal. On closer inspection the stave is warm to touch and has a slight hum. A living being that has practiced with the weapon (has the exotic proficiency) comes to understand that it is comprised of a hereto unknown star metal that can liquify and solidify rapidly into a variety of weapon configurations.
While exceptionally balanced it is difficult to operate without practice and requires will saves to change forms (DC15 each time)with failure indication an imbalance to use (treat as -2 and improvised weapon.)
*Design notes: got the impression you wanted a non-magic item, I like the idea of mercury like substance that uses bio-electric currents to change back and forth.
Archer's scope
weight 1lb
price 2,000 per plus possible
Description
This reflex scope is a marvel of glassblowing and engineering. The parts are delicate and suffer from a low break DC 12 (so don't drop your bow.) By making a series of perception checks the archer can caqlibrate their scope to provide bonuses in combat. It takes 10 minutes to calibrate and you can take up to 3 perception checks for up to a +3 bonus. The bonus is reduced by +1 for every three shots the archer makes (as the action of firing vibrates the bow/crossbow.) As a move action the archer can make a quick calibration attempt with a DC 25 perception check, failure make the shot suffer a -1 success can wither add a +1 or reduce a range penalty by 1.
*Design notes, wanted to make it balanced rather than just another + item that's not magical.

Not sure if you are willing to do this one, but thought I'd toss it out there anyway:
I'm trying to create the Miraluka race for a possible future Star Wars game using the d20 system created by Wizards of the Coast (with some liberal adjustments that basically amount to the fixing 3.5 got to turn it into the Pathfinder system). I've been trying to approach the race from the perspective of the "Create Your Own Race" section of the Advanced Race Guide, so here's the problem I'm running into:
The Miraluka are more-or-less humans that don't have eyes, as they came from a planet with a sun that doesn't give off visible light. However, they're all Force sensitive, so they "see" using the Force. The best way I can think of describing it would be like "seeing" color-less shapes, like seismic sensing from the AtLA series.
You really don't need to go finding a copy of the Star Wars d20 rules for this, since all I'm really interested in is pricing an ability that basically lets a race "see" in all directions, not subject to gaze or blinding effects, negate Displacement and Blur, possibly cannot be flanked, but cannot distinguish color or visual contrast, and cannot read.
