Jade Regent

I am getting a group of friends back into RPGs and we have decided on Pathfinder and the Jade Regent path to start. Is there anything else besides the path books (I have book 1 already and the core rulebook as well as a printout of the Jade Regent player guide.) I know this takes place in the larger Pathfinder world and I wonder if I need the campaign book to give this some context). Thanks in advance.

I don't have my books in front of me at the moment, but if I recall correctly (and you can check this by looking in Book 1) but some monster stat blocks aren't stat blocks per say but a VERY brief block of text that refers you to the appropriate resource. I believe this was done to allow more room for actual unique text instead of regurgitating information already contained in another book.

During my sessions I have on hand...
-Obviously the AP's...
-Bestiary PDF's
-Core Rulebook
-Advanced Player's Guide and Ultimate Magic/Combat

Non Book Stuff....
-Map Folio for Jade Regent
-32 page map of Golarion (which I have used to reference travel routes with a laser pointer)
-Jade Regent Item Cards
-Condition Cards

Good luck and I hope you enjoy the Adventure Path!

Most of the stuff where they just have a reference instead of full stats is stuff from the core books, which you can find on the Pathfinder Reference Document for free (it's the PRD link to the left, in the Links box under the search).

Has Bestiaries 1-3, the Ultimates, Gamemastery Guide, Advanced Player's Guide, Advanced Races Guide and, of course, the core book.

Heh, thanks ShadowFighter88, I always forget about the PRD. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't some of the creatures used from 3PP books?

If they were then their full statblocks would've been put into the adventure books - they do that for anything that can't be found on the PRD for free; monsters, templates, classes, feats, etc. They spell those out so you don't have to go buying another book.

Hmm I will have to check on the monsters, looks like there may be some investments to make. On the PDFs do you know offhand if they are searchable?

Hey Scott,

YES, the PDF's are searchable.

I haven't played the Jade Regent, but in the APs I have played they always provide a "bestiary" that covers the special monsters included in the AP as an appendix.I think this is for any creatures not covered in the core books. As Shadowfighter88 said, they shouldn't force you to run out and buy new bestiaries to be able to play the AP.

Strictly-speaking, the only books you need to purchase for running Jade Regent is the Jade Regent books themselves - everything else you need is free in the PRD and organised by sourcebook.

Are you planning to play combat on maps with miniatures?

I was thinking of picking up a Chessex battlemat and wet erase markers. Not sure what I will do miniature-wise though just yet.

Consider the Bestiary Box - contains hundreds of cardboard counters with plastic bases.

I grabbed the Paizo Gamemastery FlipMat, which is great as it supports any markers (I use Vis-a-Vis Wet Erase). Far more inexpensive then a Chessex Battlemat. Have had it for 2.5-3 yrs and it's still going strong.

Thanks for pointing out the Paizo FLipMat, I didn't notice they sold a 'basic' one and I love that it folds up too.

How critical would you say the Map Folio is?

Not critical at all. There are smaller versions of the maps in the adventure book. They're mostly decorative. Nice, though.

Thanks, I am looking at the Bestiary box and it looks like an excellent deal, is there something similar I can use for the PCs?

There is a similar box based on the NPC Codex which is due to release soon (May 22 for the pdf). I think it can be used for PCs too ;-)

Interesting, I will keep an eye out for that.

Thanks,
Scott
