Quote:
Upon reaching 4th level, and every four levels thereafter (8th, 12th, and so on), a fighter can choose to learn a new bonus feat in place of a bonus feat he has already learned. In effect, the fighter loses the bonus feat in exchange for the new one. The old feat cannot be one that was used as a prerequisite for another feat, prestige class, or other ability. A fighter can only change one feat at any given level and must choose whether or not to swap the feat at the time he gains a new bonus feat for the level.

So I've a level 3 fighter - I take Improved Unarmed attack at level 3.

I hit level 4 and swap out my bonus level 2 feat, Power attack... can I swap it out for Crane style? I already have Improved Unarmed feat and the old feat, Power attack, is not being used for a prerequisite for any other feat, class or ability.

In short my feat selection would look like...

Before
Level 1 (blah blah)
Level 2 power attack
level 3 Imp Unarmed combat

After
Level 1 (blah blah)
Level 2 power attack swapped for Crane Style
level 3 Imp Unarmed combat
Level 4 Weapon spec.

Does this work?

Yes, that works. You only need to qualify for the new feat now; you don't need to have qualified for it whenever you took the old feat.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

that's an underestimated ability of the fighter.

Yes, take cleave at low level. it's becoming useless later on ? swap it out for another feat with higher/more difficult prerequisites

Yep. You can also swap feats out to choose feats that have a minimum fighter level.
