Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

Hello Pathfinder Experts!

I was helping someone create a character recently and he was interested in multi-classing. I have never done that so there were some unanswerable questions that cropped up.

Could some of you please address any or all of these? Thanks!

1. When multiclassing, if both classes 'class skills' overlap, for example, with Perception, does the character get +3 or +6 to Perception as a class skill?

2. For Craft and Profession, does the character get only +3 in one or in all the slots for Craft and Profession?

3. What is Terran--meaning, who speaks Terran and what kind of creatures are they?

4. Do the base saves and other bonuses stack when multiclassing or leveling up? Or, does the player take the better set (or better individual) for each type of bonus or save?

5. Half elves take the racial traits of both humans and elves, does that mean, for example, that if humans get a bonus feat at first level and elves are proficient with longbows, that a half elf gets the bonus feat at first level and is also proficient with half elf weapons and armor as well as the longbow?

Thank you!

1) There is no overlap - either a skill is a class skill (granting a +3 bonus if you have 1 or more ranks into it), or it is not. If you multiclass and both classes give perception as a class skill, you still only get +3 to your perception.

2) If "Craft" and "Profession" are class skills for your character (as opposed to "Craft (Trapmaking)" as it is for a kobold), then you get a +3 bonus to each and every Craft and Profession skill that you place one or more ranks into.

3) Terran is the language of the earth. Earth elementals speak Terran as do Oreads - which are basically the offspring of Earth Elementals. Not sure if much else speaks the language, but summoners (both the summoner class and wizards/clerics who focus on summoning spells) will often take the elemental laguages (Terran for Earth, Aurian for Air, Aquan for Water, and Ignan for Fire) in order to give more advanced commands to summoned elementals.

4) Base saves for multiclassing stack additively. This means a Druid 1 / Paladin 1 will have a +4 bonus to Fortitude and Will saves and a +0 bonus to Reflex saves.

5) Are you talking about "Alternate Racial Traits" listed under the Race section, or "Race Traits" listed under the Traits section? This is one of those unfortunate situations where something with very different mechanics got two very similar names. In short, the answer to your question is no. The bonus feat of a human is an "Standard Racial Trait", which can be replaced by "Alternate Racial Traits" - both of those available in the races section. You cannot take a "Race Trait" listed under the Traits section to get an "Alternate Racial Trait" listed under the Races section.

While I normally try to avoid linking to this site as it's unofficial and can often have mistakes, it may help to clear things up a bit.

1. If the skill is a class skill for either class, it's a class skill for the character. He gets a +3 bonus for having ranks in a class skill. He doesn't get any bonus unless he has at least 1 rank in the skill.

2. Unless the class says otherwise, Craft or Profession as a class skill applies the benefit to any and all choices in which the character has at least 1 rank. The class typically lists Craft (any) or Profession (any) making this explicit.

3. Terran is the language of the elemental plane of Earth. Earth elementals speak it, as do some underground creatures and those who have an affinity with elemental energies of Earth.

4. They stack, adding together the bonuses the player gets for his level in each class. He definitely does not apply the best progression to his entire character level.

5. This is incorrect. Half-elves get their own racial traits only. edit: The Elf Blood ability counts them as both humans and elves in relation to other effects, for example, favoured enemy and bane weapons (bad) and qualifying to take feats and race traits and to use race-specific magic items (good).

1. No
2. Craft is the skill all "slots" get the +3 IF you put a rank into it
3. Terran roughly translates as Earth in this case it is referring to creatures who are native to or have ancestry where natives of the Elemental Plane of Earth.
4. you add / stack all the numbers to your base for each level.
5.No, I think you are referring to: Elf Blood: Half-elves count as both elves and humans for any effect related to race, that is talking about Effects not Traits, its a bad thing , meaning you have the weaknesses of both subtypes so if poison A only effects humans, you are effected and if poison B only effects elves, you are still effected

Thank you all; this has been *very* helpful. I've only been playing about 2 years and I got pushed into GMing so I am still learning *so* much. I appreciate you taking the time to help a learner.
