Aquatic bloodline sorcerer and Telepathy

Rules Questions

Is it really the intention that at 9th level, an aquatic bloodline sorcerer can communicate telepathically with everything? Or is it limited to only aquatic creatures, as it seems to read? Blanket telepathy seems a little too strong for a bloodline ability, especially with everything else that ability grants you.

Aquatic Telepathy (Su): At 9th level, you gain telepathy (100 feet) and can communicate with creatures with a swim speed or the aquatic or water types regardless of intelligence. You may cast suggestion on such creatures a number of times per day equal to your Charisma modifier. This ability is telepathic and does not require audible or visual components. At 15th level, once per day you can telepathically call and request a service from an aquatic, water, or swimming creature as if using demand or greater planar ally.

it seems to say only creatures with a swim speed or aquatic/water types...unless I'm missing something that lets it work with "everything" maybe I'm just tired :)

As I read it, no, it allows as it says and nothing more

(please take any sarcasm as humorous and not insulting as no insult was intended)

I'd argue that it just does what it says; give you telepathy and in addition allow you to communicate with unintelligent aquatic creatures.

Telepathy is a normally defined ability:

Telepathy (Su)

The creature can mentally communicate with any other creature within a certain range (specified in the creature’s entry, usually 100 feet) that has a language. It is possible to address multiple creatures at once telepathically, although maintaining a telepathic conversation with more than one creature at a time is just as difficult as simultaneously speaking and listening to multiple people at the same time

And unless the ability specifically mentions it overrides this normal ability, it doesn't change the base ability.

Not everything has a swim speed, anything can swim at 1/4 base move speed.

Check: Make a Swim check once per round while you are in the water. Success means you may swim at up to half your speed (as a full-round action) or at a quarter of your speed (as a move action). If you fail by 4 or less, you make no progress. If you fail by 5 or more, you go underwater.

and if that counted as a swim speed then the next bit would be pretty pointless.

Special: A creature with a swim speed can move through water at its indicated speed without making Swim checks. It gains a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform a special action or avoid a hazard. The creature can always choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered when swimming. Such a creature can use the run action while swimming, provided that it swims in a straight line.

both of those can be found in the skill section for swim.

I would be inclined to go with it either way my GM ruled it to be honest...RAW it sounds like its how Tiems put it...for flavor it sounds like it should work how I put it

Again thats for ME...how I would like it to work in MY game if I were the GM...so plz no post about how I can't read or something stupid like that

I agree with Drakhiel that it is somewhat ambiguous. Especially since the name of the ability is aquatic telepathy.

However, with improved familiar you could achieve largely the same thing, I.e., telepathy. Either through true speech familiars (cassias angel, etc.) who can speak with any creature that has a language for you, or if you're really going for telepathy, with the imp consular at level 8, who also has telepathy and could relay a conversation for you.

Since this is a 9th level power, I'd argue it's roughly balanced in a way that it shouldn't impact play too much at that level.

That said; does anyone know anything about rules for talking underwater? Maybe it's flavoured as a way to compensate for the lack of being able to communicate efficiently with allies; I imagine it would be particularly difficult when trying to actually talk to an ally underwater who is 100 ft away.

Hi there,

With the caveat that my statements do not constitute an official FAQ pronouncement on the subject, the wording I wrote for that ability was intended to mean "you can telepathy (100 feet) which you can use to communicate with..." It was not intended to be read as separate phrases like (you gain telepathy) +and+ (can communicate with...) but as a single connected sentence (you gain telepathy and can communicate with...).

Telepathy normally only allows you to communicate with things that have a language; the sentence is meant to connote that your telepathy allow you to communicate with them even if they don't, as long as they are swimmy/watery types.

The RAI, FYI. :)
