First level's spent gold. Are you stuck with it, or

When you retrain, can you spend it again in an alternate manner?
Are there any exception 's.

Somesone said that consumables used cannot be changed.

Correct. That and items purchased with PP are the exceptions.

... or at least, that's the common wisdom on the matter. I don't have a link to an official source of that, so I might be wrong. Personally I'm going to keep tracking expendables at first level even so, but it might not actually be compulsory.

So a person who starts out as a gunslinger, throwing star thrower, or archer is slightly penalized if they want to try something else.

consumables and ammunition can be sold back if they have not been used, or are in an appropriately sized bundle (generally lots of 20 for ammunition).

Examples:
You bought a wand of cure light wounds, and it still has 50 charges. You can sell it back.

You bought a wand of cure light wounds, and it now has 49 or fewer charges. You cannot sell it back.

You bought 2 bundles of 20 arrows, you still have all 40. You can sell both back.

You bought 2 bundles of 20 arrows, you have 20 or more but less than 40, you can sell back one bundle.

You bought 2 bundles of arrows, and you now have fewer than 20. You cannot sell them back.

You bought a potion of cure light wounds, and still have the potion. You can sell it back.

You bought a potion of cure light wounds and drank it. You cannot sell it back.

You sell back based on the cost you paid, not the value of the item.

Example:

You are a gunslinger, so you payed 10% of the listed price for your black powder doses. You sell back at 10% listed value, not full value.

So ever so slightly penalized.

At least you have the option to retrain now when before you didn't. Count yourself luck.

Ummm would an Oreo do?

Considering everyone who keeps their same character through level 1 has more than likely spent gold on consumables, I don't see it as unreasonable to assume that whatever your character had been you'd still be out some gold - remember you still get to keep the experience and consumables are an inevitable cost of adventuring. Nobody else finishes first level with full gold.

Are you asking that if you purchased a potion of CLW at level 1 and then used it and then you retrained - do you get to sell it back for full gold?

The answer is no.

If you spent gold to bribe someone and then retrain - do you get that gold back?

The answer is no.

Money your character has already used is gone. Retraining is not a magic reset button that comes with 3 XP and up to 6 PP. You don't get the rewards for free.

I do believe that if you purchased something that has not been altered that you can turn it back in and get the PP back. But if you got a wand this way and used even 1 charge, it is yours for good.

If those two arrows kept you alive, then I daresay they were worth the silver. At least you weren't a gunslinger, then you might be down as much as 10 gold pieces!

I've seen a lot of "Let's look a gift horse in the mouth!" threads lately. Not saying yours was meant as one, but they tend to blur together...

Yea, having now made it through to second level with my first character, I gotta say, I don't really see what the big deal is. In reality, you are only going to save a little bit of money by selling back your starting sword, or scale mail, or whatever. Trivial over the life of the character.

Sure, if you spent the money for a couple of CLW potions, and had to use them (be it on yourself, or a fellow Pathfinder). Those potions probably meant the difference between living and dying!

Granted, I've been pretty lucky, in that I've been in groups where people have been generous... which is why my fast-talking rogue hasn't been worried about spending cash on bribes, etc. You do what you have to do, and make it through the adventure. There is a lot more benefit to survival than saving a little cash here and there.

Also, there is always the ability to just trash your character, and start again. Get a group of six (or so) together, and keep re-running First Steps (getting characters to 2nd fast, and spread the GM credits around)!

From what I gather, you should be able to finish that all in about 12 hours, right? Faster, perhaps, if you are playing with a group that you know... and work well together. Probably even faster since you'll be replaying (from what I've understood, you can replay these as many times as you want, right?)

Yeah...it gets to a point, though, where you're like "I don't want to do this anymore," especially if you're playing with the same group over and over. But yes, you technically can still do it.
