Rage as a free action

Rules Questions

Raging and unRaging is a free action for a Barbarian... But, could he rage also when it's not in his turn?

Nope. No more than a fighter with Quick Draw can draw his sword when it isn't his turn (also a free action). There may be a feat or rage power that allows him to rage off-turn, though. I know there was one in 3.5.

Free Actions as a general rule can't be done out of your turn. Speaking is the exception.

If you can rage as an immediate action, you could do this.

Actions that are not Immediate Actions can't be done outside of your turn. I think the only caveat of this is tacking a free action on a Readied Action and saying that you are beforehand, but I'm not 100% on that. I.E. "I ready my greatsword and will rage and attack if something hostile comes within reach."

EDIT: Nope, just looked at it and it's not allowed. It's the 5 foot step thing that always throws me off.

Thanks everybody! I appreciated the insight...
