AP's are so well written, it's so hard to choose

Pathfinder Adventure Path General Discussion

Sovereign Court

This seems to be a re-occurring theme on this board, but I will go ahead and post my own thread for it.

I am looking to run an adventure path, but I am seriously stuck on which one to run as they all seem good to me. I want an AP that I can take several months to prepare for, memorize every detail and really have the adventure ready for showtime.

Another problem is that my group is very "kick in the door" style "roll-players" that want to be spoon fed content and I want to break them of that and get them thinking and roleplaying, but nothing too heavy.

I would also love for the AP to be more open instead of encounter after encounter.

I've already suggested Kingmaker but got mixed responses from the players. A good portion of them want me to run Way of the Wicked, but I'm saving that for another time.

Any other ideas?

Edit: I should note that we have already played RotRL's, Serpent's Skull, Carrion Crown and Skull and Shackles

I'll recommend Curse of the Crimson Throne. It's an urban adventure largely in one city. With several months to plan you can get intimately familiar with Korvosa and really make it feel alive. Plenty of places to move around and roleplay if that's what you're trying to push and some investigation aspects too. Nothing too heavy I don't think if you're just starting to move your players more towards that style.
There are also still several "kick in the door" areas (including most of Book 5) to bring your players back to that if they prefer.
Only issue is that CotCT is still 3.5, so some conversion is required. But other than that, I think it would be a winner for you!

Sovereign Court

The conversions are available here to make things easier.

I too would recommend Curse of the Crimson Throne.

The Exchange

Curse of the Crimson Throne is VERY Role play focused and thus not recommanded for novice role players who prefer roll playing. I would suggest:

1) Shattered Star - it's not very "open", being a series of dungeon crawls, but it certainly does a great job of introducing role playing in edible quentities into the most unlikely place (a crawl), so maybe that's a way to introduce your players to the fun of role playing. Either this or,

2)Legacy of Fire, a great path (except maybe for part 5, and part 3 is considerd a little weak too) that can be modulated into having as much role playing as you want, while not for a second abandoning it's combat heavy plot. Or,

3) Jade Regent, which is in many regards similar to Legacy of Fire in that you can modulate it's focus to either combat or role play as you please, and it's very open with a focus on travel themes.

Likewise I'd recommend Shattered Star from the description of your group. For a dungeon-crawling AP it is also loaded with a lot of RP potential. A kick in the door group should have fun.

Jade Regent is a good choice as it should appeal to a variety of styles and provides a good-in for some rping. I'm half-way through the 2nd book and my group on the whole I thought was a kick in the door crowd but have surprised me with some great rping.

Though if your players are interested in Way of the Wicked and assuming you have some interest in running it that would seem to be the logical choice. Player buy-in is at a premium.

Sovereign Court

All great recommendations, and it mirrors the same problem that I am currently having.

As for Way of the Wicked, I've attempted to already run it with the group, but it resulted in a TPK. If Gary is watching then he knows that I love his product, but at this time I will need to save it for a time when my players begin to think more through a problem instead of rushing through a fortress, attempting to kill everything as fast as they can.

At this point, I think my mind is in a three way tie between Curse of the Crimson Throne (which will throw them to the "RP wolves"), Legacy of Fire and Jade Regent.

Out of curiosity, how many of those APs did finsh? It is my understanding that they are so long that a good portion of people never finish an AP.

Second Darkness or Serpent's Skull.

Nothing could possibly go wrong with those two...
