A Question on Outsiders

In 2 weeks time I'm about to start running the Shattered Star adventure path. Having recently purchased the Advanced Race Guide I'm encouraging my players to branch out a little from the norm. I've just had one of them send the following to me:

Reading through the Ifrit racial details (Advanced Race Guide p127), they are of the Outsider type (subtype: Native Outsider). Looking up what this was all about (Bestiary I, p309) fits with the Ifrit heritage and elemental fire bloodline fine, but they get some things that I just wanted to double-check with you (eg. d10 base hit die, BAB progression (+1/level), martial weapons proficiency, etc).

Now I don't think that's right. I would have thought that the character still adopts the characteristics of its chosen class. If it's a Sorcerer, it's hd is 1d6 and it's BAB is as per that of a Sorcerer.

I've checked out a three Ifrit Sorcerer characters online and two of them had the standard 1d6 while the 3rd somehown had 17hp at 1st level (not sure how that worked out).

Anyone have any definitive rulings for me?

Regards

Prux

Those are for standard outsiders from the bestiary. When advancing via class levels, you still get only what is listed in the actual class and racial features. An Ifrit sorcerer gets a d6 hit die, 1/2 BAB progression, and the proficiencies that a sorcerer normally gains, along with the Ifrit racial traits listed in the ARG.

The traits from the bestiary type are pretty much unrelated. They are basically the racial hit dice for outsiders, but PC's generally do not advance using those. They're usually defined solely through class levels.

Thanks very much.

One noteworthy thing: a PC whose type is "outsider" does not count as "human" and is therefore not a legal target for a spell like "Hold Person".
