Quick Ranger Question

Rules Questions

Can a ranger use multile shot styles? Example, can a ranger you Manyshot and Rapid shot in the same round of shooting?

Sczarni

Yes. Anyone with the requisite feats can.

I find, once I get Manyshot I don't use it with Rapid Shot as much as I thought. Instead I use Manyshot & Deadly Aim.

Adding Rapid Shot to this (which is legal as well) hurts the attack rolls.

Also worth noting that we usually have Haste going - so I get an extra attack each round anyhow...

Liberty's Edge

Krodjin is correct. I have a fully dedicated archer Ranger and I have stacked the three (Rapid Shot, Manyshot, Deadly Aim) on occasion. You probably only want to use them all at once if:

a) Your foe has an atrocious AC and all of the arrows are likely to hit regardless.

b) Your foe has an incredible AC, and you need a natural 20 to make contact regardless of what to-hit modifiers you can muster.

The latter scenario occurred to me once, when I was fighting a pre-buffed wizard who had an AC well into the 30s. I was launching 5 arrows a round, and I managed to get quite a few 20s over the course of combat. Too bad she had Stoneskin up anyways. -___-

Also, if you are going to be mixing and matching the feats, you may want to make a spreadsheet to keep track of things. Mine has proven invaluable for crunching numbers quickly in combat.

lol thanks guys, I was asking as a GM. Because I hate the ranger in my group. Has his Dex stacked to +5. So just has rediculous to hit bonuses with excesive shots. I know it's how the class is, was just making sure everything was rule savy.

Shadow Lodge

+5 Dex at level 6 (when you get Manyshot) isn't too excessive. That's an 18 (boosted from 17 at level 4, possibly 15 before racial modifiers) with a +2 Belt of Dex (25% of a 6th level character's WBL).

You could check his math if you're worried, but it's probably all correct by the rules (and not unusual for an archer of any class). Why are you so bothered by the ranger? Is he severely outshining the rest of the party?

Yes. I play in a Carrion Crown group, 4 players. That game feels difficult and exciting. I run a Serpent Skull and Jade game with 5 players and they seem to walk through most encounters easily. I am trying to scale encounters up a bit, however I am finding the ranger is very rarely missing any attacks and then there are the barbarians in both games that power attack full round action and are throwing on average 35-40 damage basically one shotting most enemies. They are glass cannons though so its not such a concern.

I have a similar problem with the fighter in my Serpents Skull game. As the bad guys get higher level there is alot you can do, blur, displacement, wind wall, fickle winds, disarm etc. How's his Will save, confusion and dominate can turn all that archery goodness back on the party. Its happened a few times in my game, watch the rest of the party run and hide!

I should mention i was a player in our previous Kingmaker game...played an archer ranger.

edit: case in point

Serpents Skull obit thread:

Name: Seraphina
Race: Elf
Classes/Levels: Alchemist 7/Rogue 3

Death: Shot several times in the back by the parties overspecialised Archer.

Raised and not very happy with the archer!

If he's got Manyshot, he probably doesn't have Improved Precise Shot.

Read up on how cover works in combat, if you haven't recently. Chances are, he should be getting -2 to -4 on many attacks due to battlefield positioning, especially if opponents are using it deliberately. This is in addition to the -4 from being in melee, if he doesn't have precise shot, which he should.

But if the players are having fun steamrolling their current encounters, let them. Your job isn't to win, after all. Try your best to stomp them on the encounters that aren't so easy, and they'll feel like badasses if they win those too.

i was thinking the same thing, but I realized that if he took improved precise shot as a bonus feat at 6th he could take Manyshot as early as 7th... Fighters on the other hand CAN'T get improved precise shot until 11th, meaning hey face those penalties (when used correctly) for a majority of their careers.

In my experience about half-to-3/4 the encounters are fairly easy in APs/Modules and won't put the PCs in much danger outside of a run of good luck for the enemies on rolls.

I assume that's intentional, as any lone equal CR encounter is only supposed to drain about 20% of a 4 person party's daily resources.

And I wasn't laughing when the archer was killed by the parties other 'Confused' fighter...much.
