The hinge breaking in some fashion seems to be a common issue with this product. I was wondering (for those of us that do not seem to have this issue with the product) if there is something we can do to either help make sure this does not happen, or if there is some sort of fix for it in case that it does - especially since this is a limited edition product, and as time goes on, the number of available "new-in-the-box" copies dwindles, which would eventually make it impossible to replace by simply exchanging it...

I'm not sure if it's a "common" issue, exactly... but I will point out that the hinge pins are simply standard watchband pins, and replacements can be had from just about any jeweler or watch shop.

Well, it's just that I have been seeing a number of threads concerning this issue come up, so I just went with the term "common"; my mistake...

But I thank you for the information concerning how to possibly go about repairing the issue should it come up after a new replacement is no longer an option...

I repaired one of the copies with a broken hinge earlier and found the repair process to be fairly simple.

In the case that the pin becomes loose and falls out or gets sheered the hole on the latch where the missing or damaged pin should be is deeper than the actual pin, and you should be able to slide the pin all the way in once you procure a new one. When you have aligned it with its corresponding hole in the book tilt the book so that the pin slides back out of the hole and into the other one as well. Once you have done this use a small amount of jewelers glue to bind the new pin into the latch hole (but not the books) and you should have a fully functional latch.

If parts of the original pin are still in the hole a pair of needle-nose pliers should be able to remove most remnants, these should be available at Lowes or Home Depot for about two dollars.
