Question about DQs

So, supposing someone's item is DQed. Do they get any notification of the fact? Or do they have to be sure to make it through all the items in the voting in order to see if it shows up?

Submissions are anonymous and we do not notify if a submission is disqualified.

While I understand the sentiment, I don't really agree ...

I *do* think it's an accomplishment to enter, but just entering doesn't make you a winner ... making it as far as the top 32 makes you a winner.

Otherwise you're still one of the anonymous masses :)

But what prevents one item from showing up earlier and/or more often than another, equally impressive item? Are the votes proportionately weighted by the number of times that the item shows up?

Yeah, they're apparently weighted toward items that have been presented less frequently. There's a whole thread explaining it, but it's all over my head.

In a grossly oversimplified summary, every item will be presented a near-identical number of times, thus votes should not be skewed by the number of times an object has been presented. In theory. Which just makes the "what is paired with what" rules all the more important, hence the heavy-duty mathematical theory.

All told, I think the new mechanism has a number of fascinating ramifications for the contest.
