Who else has returned to the fight?

My copy should be showing up sometime today. I was originally going to hold-off for awhile, but the reviews have been so positive that when Newegg offered $12 off and free shipping I couldn't pass it up.

That's a great deal! I've played the game briefly when work has allowed but its very awesome so far.

It's awesome. Rock-solid campaign (so far, anyway), improved multiplayer, and while I miss Firefight, I'm digging Spartan Ops and I'm intrigued by the promise of ongoing, new, regular content.

I finished the campaign last night.

DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE CAMPAIGN:
I was disappointed with the ending. Not so much about Cortana being not-dead (lets be honest, she'll come back some how) but that there was not an awesome boss fight. Flying the space ship felt like a Halo game at the end but I wanted something more than all the waves of bad guys.

My copy was waiting for me yesterday. Only managed to boot it up, watch the opening and get my controls configured (Why they feel the need to switch up the default control scheme every game is beyond me.) so no real impressions yet.

I was wondering how long it was going to take for a Halo 4 thread to get started. :-)

I like it better gameplay-wise than everything except the original. And story-wise better than everything except the original and Reach. But I've been limiting myself to one level per night, so I'm only on Reclaimer and might change my mind after I finish it.

Mantis FTW!

That is all.

Liberty's Edge

The single player has an issue thats been bugging me since the very first Halo game.

I just finished the second chapter. The third chapter starts. There is no fade out and fade back in. You start the third chapter right where you ended the second chapter. Had no chance to change weapons.

But when the chapter starts, I have more ammo for 1 weapon and the other weapon I had is totally different then when I ended chapter 2.

There was no in game reason at all my weapons should have changed.

I HATE when games do that, takes me out of the game.

Yeah. The weapon changing thing really bugs me, too. At least in Halo 1 most of the level transitions involved Foe Hammer transporting you between locations, which would explain the change in weapon loadouts.

And I want to say you kept your weapons most of the time there was an immediate level transition. It only started getting noticeable in Halo 2 and on.

Playing time is really limited so far. Getting access to the good TV is tough as it's in the warmest room in the house, the better half is always cold and FPSes give her motion sickness, so I'm limited to playing when both her and my son are asleep. (No need to traumatize the five year-old with massive amounts of gun violence.) So I've only completed the first 2 levels at present.

I'm enjoying it and it certainly feels like another Halo game, but I haven't been blown away so far like the majority of the reviewers were.

Liberty's Edge

Good game mostly, graphics and controls were good I thought. One major gripe I do have about it is the length of the campaign. For $59.99 I should be getting a game that lasts longer than 6-10 hrs. I took my time playing the campaign and finished the game easily under 9 hrs. I know a big part of halo is the multiplayer aspects of it, but seriously when I'm seeing people that beat the campaign completely in as fast as 6 hrs something is wrong. I am not feeling as if I have gotten my monies worth from this game for something this short.

What do you feel would be a fair average time to complete the campaign on a $60 game with a heavy multiplayer side?

I'd heard that the campaign was short, but this is getting ridiculous. For that kind of money, I want at least a 12 hour campaign- the game should last more than a week. Either that or a blisteringly hard campaign.

Not everyone plays multiplayer. I picked up Halo 1 - 3 and have played only single player on them.

I enjoy the storyline but online play is a blast.

Then I would want double. 60 bucks is not exactly chump change, especially at this time.

15-20 hours or so (depending on skill) - the last couple of Halo games took me about that time (maybe a tad longer) on Legendary difficulty.

I expect nothing less for Halo 4.

My average cost to hour ratio is $4 per hour played. So a $60 game divided by $4 would be around 15 hours of play time. Since I do not do multiplayer...

It's disappointing to hear the campaign is so short. I also don't use the multi-player components. I have better things to do with my time than listen to overly-aggressive 12 year-olds fling homophobic slurs around.

About the only time I play on-line is co-op with people I know, which also suffers if the campaign is short. I may give Sparten Ops a try once I finish the campaign, but getting 3 of my friends online at the same time to play when I can will likely be difficult.

Liberty's Edge

I heard you can do the spartan ops stuff solo.

I understand -- I don't play it myself, but it is a major factor in the popularity of the Halo franchise, so when you're speaking of the audience at large, the multiplayer features are part of the value of the game as far as the designers, marketers, and vast majority of the audience are concerned. :-)

I don't really have a horse in this race, but I am curious as to what people feel is a reasonable average length of time for the campaign in a $60 game that is multiplayer-heavy is.

If it's any comfort, 343 (or at least Bonnie and Kiki) are attempting to crack down on some of the nastiness on XBL: http://www.gamespot.com/news/halo-4-devs-speak-out-against-sexism-6399205

But yes, I feel your pain. I haven't played with strangers on XBL since Halo 2.

Liberty's Edge

Yes I have noticed a total lack of trash talking and insults when I play Halo 4 multi player. But I also have not heard anyone doing any real game tactical talk, either.

You also know you can mute people?

Shadow Lodge

Pathfinder Lost Omens, Rulebook, Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Well if anyone is up for some multiplayer or co-op campaign let me know :).

crosis23

It may be my wife's X-Box Live settings but everyone I play with online are muted already. I hear no one talking.

I'm aware the mute feature exists. But if you're not interacting with other people at all, the only difference between playing against other people and bots is the amount of tea-bagging.

Or taking DMR rounds to the face since I think its over powered. I'm sure bots would use a variety of weapons.

If only game AI was that advanced. :-)

When my 17 year old son is over he is not allowed to trash talk or the game goes off.

With regards to campaign length, I am satisfied with 6 hours. $10 per hour seems fair to me in this day and age, though I would prefer about 12 hours, which is what I tend to get out of most FPS campaigns I play. I spent 60 hours in Dead Island though, which makes up for some of the shorter games I have played.

Liberty's Edge

I would say at least 15-20 hours with multiplayer, more without it being something like 30-35 hrs. I did play spartan ops, but I honestly saw that as a half assessing attempt to lengthen the game. I really did not get much out of it at all and found it tho be a very shallow experience.

Sczarni

Heroic took me about 12-15 hours across most of a week to complete.

Legendary will probably take significantly longer.

War Games has been remarkably fun so far, with the multiplayer interface about as good and easy as I've ever used. It's kind of like Halo:Reach meets Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Collecting the gear/armor/weapons seems like it'll be a fun challenge, and I haven't even gotten into the Spartan Ops sections.

Collecting all the gear is pretty easy.

I was SR2 this morning. I spent a few hours playing with my siblings then went online for some massive team slayer matches and some flood matches.

I'm now SR17.

I think all the functional gear is unlocked at SR22. Beyond that is just cosmetic customisation.

Its still a labor of purchasing unlocked equipment for customization options on the fly. I'm SR 27 and won't have everything unlocked for a little while.

I haven't played 4 yet, but it sounds promising. I started out on Halo 1 on launch day, but over time I got seriously sick of how cartoony the Covenant are(grunts look and sound like Muppets after a while) and the Armor Lock abilities on Reach killed my interest for a long time.

Can anyone experienced with 4 tell me if it'd be worth returning to? Are the Armor abilities from Reach still there? Is the game still centered around killing muppets?

Sczarni

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Covenant (at least on Heroic) are MUCH more tough and deadly than in Halo 2, 3, or even Reach.

Armor lock doesn't exist.

Armor Abilities DO, and they're fun.

Hardlight Shield gives you a temporary "blue energy shield" in front of your Spartan, capable of blocking any projectile but dissipates when hit.

Sprint is now available all the time, not just when its installed as the armor ability.

New enemies (Prometheans) are tough, smart, and deadly. They use overlapping fields of fire, and are fairly smart for console AI enemies.

Again, this is all on Heroic. I have yet to try Legendary, and the easier modes are not that interesting to me.

War Games (new Plaver vs. Player mode) is fast, fun, and provides a great advance on the old PvP architecture. All the standby modes (Slayer, SWAT, Flood Infection, Capture the Flag, etc) are present, and the new matchmaking system works great!

Haven't tried Spartan Ops yet, but its a weekly "firefight" style mission/missions that will progress the story of the Spartans on UNSC Infinity, in addition to the standard Campaign story.

All in all, I think its great.

After awhile you come to love the grunts, and to view whacking them over the head with your rocket launcher as a sign of affection.

I thought I would totally suck at online play, but I've been doing alright. I've been playing a lot of regicide. While DMR tends to be the go to gun most of the time, a few maps call for the Suppressor for its ridiculous close range DPS. It's good for clearing multiple enemies in a tight corridor.

I want to try out the Lightrifle online soon. I just bought it for my loadouts. It's more powerful scoped than any other primary weapon, but is the least powerful in normal mode. It should be handy on Ragnarok and other large maps.

I was meh on regicide, not a FFA fan. I prefer objective based matches over simple scoring points for skills.

The modes I have played the most are big team infinity slayer, flood and regicide in order of most to least.

I typically play Big Team Slayer or Slayer Pro. Playing without armor abilities or the map shows how good you are without essentially playing Call of Duty with SWAT mode.

I think I'm getting close to the end. Just finished the first gondola ride last night, to be sufficiently vague-yet-specific.

Overall so far, I think the game is a worthy successor to the series. My only quibble is the music. It's not bad, per se, but it's simply there. Which is disappointing, considering how much the music contributed to the previous games.

Project Manager

Huh, I really liked the new theme.

The opening music and ending music was fine, but during the game it doesn't really stand out the way it did in previous games. I don't know, maybe it will grow on me.

Finally finished the campaign over the weekend, and it didn't feel overly short at all. I want to say ODST felt a lot shorter than Halo 4.

Tried a few missions of Spartan Ops, and while they can be played Solo, they're obviously meant for co-op. I found Ep1: Chapter 3 very frustrating, particularly when you get ambushed while in the open near the end, and the game kept re-spawning me right in the middle of the giant horde, leading to my repeated near-instant death before it finally re-spawned me behind some cover where I could actually make a stand.

Project Manager

Hmm, good point. I liked the fact that the new theme uses a female singer, given how much this story is about the loss of Cortana, but you're right -- I did miss the theme kicking in in a grand way during key moments of actual gameplay.

Also, the new theme sort of reminded me of Battlestar Galactica. I kept waiting for those drums to kick in. :)

Lantern Lodge

While I've taken a hiatus from trying to Solo Legendary (save game problem forced me to restart from a previous mission), I have been playing multiplayer quite a bit. What I play ultimately depends on the friends I'm playing with, so feel free to add me.

I play Big Team Slayer. I like Scorpion tanks, Mantis mecha and a wide assortment of power weapons.

I've been playing a bunch of Big Team Infinity Slayer. I'm Umbral Reaver on there. Send me a message if you like!

And despite everyone saying the DMR is better, I like my light rifle. :3

Umbral Reaver wrote:

Yeah. I have to say the light rifle is my favorite of the new weapons. The DMR is nice, but it's a weird sort of in-between weapon to me. I'd rather have a battle rifle or a sniper rifle.
