Disney buys Star Wars. Episode 7 ETA 2015. Not sure if this is good or bad news. They can't hate Star Wars as much as Lucas, can they?

If this allows Disney to release the original SW movies uncut and unmodified on home video? Then YES, this is AWESEOME news.
If this allows other directors do good Star Wars films (i.e. play in the SW universe)? Then YES this is AWESOME news.
However, Disney now owns the Muppets, Marvel and LucasFilm. This now solidifies Disney, not APPLE as the EVIL EMPIRE.
I now bow before my GIANT MOUSE EARED OVERLORDS.

You know what, though? Tons of nerds (including myself) have wanted Lucas out of the way to let fresher minds direct the mythology, anyway. So here you go.
Personally, I do not like when big companies get bigger and bigger. But I have to say, Disney has done right by Marvel. A lot of people freaked out over that buyout, but I think the people at Disney are smarter and more savvy now. They know a good thing, and will not mess with it. They just throw money at the people making it, and it turns out okay.

They should adapt the Thrawn Trilogy. I hope, at least, that the new films don't invalidate the existing Expanded Universe.
I have to admit I know next to nothing about the Expanded Universe besides stuff from the video games (of which I don't even know if it counts as Expanded Universe) but what I'm curious about:
Do you think by Episode VII they mean an actual sequel, continuing the timeline and events right after episode VI, dealing with more or less the same characters or do they just use that term for ease of reference and don't attach any narrative meaning to it?
I would hope the sequel would attempt to pick up much later. Hard to see them continuing right after episode 6 given the age of all the actors involved, and I can't see recasting going that well for fans.

Disney so far has not mismanaged Marvel, so I am cautiously optimistic about this. I can only hope that they take a good look at Star Wars: Legacy and say "THIS is the next movie trilogy!".
Seeing Cade, Jariah and Blue on the big screen would be glorious...

I agree that the original actors would of course be too old. But IIRC Lucas drafted the storyline for 9 episodes from the beginning so I my question is if you think Disney intends to finish this cycle or if they might go back to the age of the republic for example.

It's 32-40m shares of stock, and Disney's outstanding stock is ~1.79B, which is only slightly more than 2%. Disney has a market cap of $89B, so a $4B deal is not that significant.
Edit: They didn't even need to publicly disclose the details of the agreement, which is required if the transaction is material to the company. They filed an 8-K with a press release instead, which is an optional filing.
Well, I've searched my feelings ... and I honestly can't give a hoot. I can't imagine how the franchise could get *worse* at this point.
Question: does this mean Micky's got his paws on Indiana Jones too?

Hmmm... I don't know the specifics of how much Paramount puts into the Indiana Jones films. But, yes, depending on how much Lucasfilm owns the Indiana Jones flicks, now Disney owns that amount.

Wait, Sam & Max aren't tied into LucasArts at all anymore, right?
No sir. TellTale Games now has Sam and Max, sir. The LucasArts contract expired in 2005 and was never renewed.

Personally, in the last three-and-a-half hours since I've heard this news, I've become more and more stoked over the prospect of a Star Wars VII.
I became more hopeful once I remembered that John Carter was the best Star Wars movie since Jedi.
But, on the other hand, given how badly it bombed, I'm not overly hopeful that the same team that did so well with that film will be given the helm of Episode VII.
Still, the bar set by Episodes I-III is so low, it's hard to imagine not surpassing it. Episode VII could consist of two hours worth of screencap of some random dude playing the Star Wars MMORPG and still be a better movie.

I'll level with everyone:
When I saw Phantom Menace, I was really excited walking into the theater. Then I encountered... midichlorians. And the long, drawn out stuff on Tatooine. There were a lot of moments that I had watching it for the first time where I was like, "When is this going to get back to the GOOD stuff?"
But you know what? It was still a chance for me to experience an entirely new Star Wars movie for the first time in the theater. And that experience was magical.
If you had asked me a week ago, "Will there ever be an EP 7?" I would have laughed, said that was ridiculous, and explained why that would be a bad idea.
And yet, here we are, and for some reason, I feel the same way I felt when I first saw the Ep I trailer.

I've seen a lot of hate all over the net about this. Disney has had great success with the Pirates franchise, as well as the National Treasure movies. They weren't as good as the Pirates stuff, but still fun. And lest we forget, Avengers. I really think they'll do the SW franchise justice, and they certainly can't do worse than Phantom Menace, IMHO.
