The burning condition

Rules Questions

Anyone know where I might be able to find or dig up RAW on setting objects alight, how fast a fire spreads, if there are any special rules above and beyond a full-round action to put it out, etc.?

To be a bit more specific, I have a ship that is about to be attacked with obscene quantities of alchemist's fire. I know it's a full-round action to extinguish the flames and those flames will spread if not tended quickly enough, but surely they would spread more quickly vertically than horizontally, yes?

Anyone know where I may be able to find a supplement to back the ruling at the table?

There are no RAW that I can find regarding fire spreading.

Having said that, though, there is an excellent take on it in Monte Cook's Ptolus, which I'll try to summarise here:

Treat a fire as a construct with HD equal to the number of squares it fills., with no ability scores except Dex 15, give it the Weapon Finesse feat, and do not adjust its attack bonus for its size.

Fire is immune to all damage except water (a gallon does 1d6 damage), cold and smothering (a blanket, rug or whatever does 1d6 damage). It has the fire subtype.

Fire makes one "attack" per round. Against characters, it deals 1d6 damage, with a DC 15 Ref save to avoid catching on fire. Against unattended, non-magical objects, an attack by the fire has a flat 50% chance of setting them (and their square) on fire. This increases the fire's hit dice and may increase its size. Any square that has been on fire for 10 minutes (100 rounds) burns itself out.

There are more rules about being inside burning buildings, and the like, but that should get you started.

You can find some info here and here.

Can't find much else.

That helps out quite a bit, actually. At least I have some kind of mechanic to work with now. Thanks guys! :)
