Cypher Mage: is there a Faction?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Scarab Sages

Hello,

Is there an existing faction for the Order of the Cypher? If so what book is it in?

If not, how would you go about making it?

I've just jotted down a skeleton of a faction, never made one before.

Spoiler:

Going from Inner Sea Magic I'd make them a Guild rather than an Academy as they appear to be more interested in the practical aspects of magic as well as the theory. So they'd give the standard Guild options.

Requirements:
Entrance Fee: 500gp (Possibly higher, they charge a fortune just to spend a night in the Cypher Lodge)
Entrance Exam: DC20 Knowledge (Arcana/History)
Tuition: 100gp/term (again, possibly more, if tuition includes board then 100gp won't even cover that for a term at 1gp/night for members)

Education
Education checks: Knowledge (Arcana), Knowledge (History), Linguisitcs, Spellcraft, [? Profession: Scribe?]
Term: Four Months
Flunk: 4 consecutive checks

Extracurricular tasks:
Cypher Hunter (+1 Fame): Once per term you can attempt to unlock a secret of Thassilonia. This may be through a breakthrough, revelatory discovery in a known piece of work (DC 25 spellcraft or linguistics) or through the discovery of new monuments.

Well there is the CypherMage guild itself in Riddleport. That's where the Gate is, after all.

Yeah, I am aware of the existence of the Order of the Cypher, I was looking for a write up of a faction (ala the write ups in Inner Sea Magic for the Acadamae in Korvosa, Arcanamirium in Absalom, Maagambya Academy in Nantambu).

Looks like there isn't an official one (just had a gander through Varisia: Birthplace of Legends and nothing there). Oh well!

as long as there's nothing in the faction, guide either, then I'd say no... I havn't really read said faction guide yet, so i'm not ure if there is

The Guild IS the faction for all intents and purposes. The gate doesn't really cast political shadows beyond Riddleport which is what defines a "faction" in the sense you're thinking of.

What he's looking for is the Faction ruleset statblock, which includes boons and such specific to being a member of the Cyphermages as well as extra things you can do to earn Fame/Prestige. There ARE other factions that have been detailed that don't have reach beyond a very limited geographic area (Arcanamirium in Absalom, for example) so this isn't an unreasonable question.

But I'm pretty sure the answer is "no." If it's not in those two books, they didn't do it.

Exactly this. I hadn't been able to find one in the Faction Guide or Inner Sea Magic but thought that one might exist. Apparently it doesn't which is fine, I'll just do some work on the framework I started above.

The vast majority of the Factions listed in Inner Sea Magic don't have much political clout at all and certainly not beyond a very small geographic area (Kintargo Opera House, the White Grotto, the Poisoner's Guild of Daggermark, Citadel Enferac) and Cypher Mages are, to my mind at least, more well known than these groups.
