Anyone see anything awesome?

Several of them stand out to me.

The Mammoth Rider is really awesome, because you get to instantly make your animal companion Huge size with only a single level dip (though there are definitely good reasons to stick with it for more levels, like boosting its Str and Con even more, upping its natural armor, and increasing its reach).

The Blackfire Adept is interesting because it seems like it was made for the Master Summoner, and has an ability that allows your summoned creatures to use their summoning abilities, so you can chain-summon.

I'm sure a lot of people are going to go nuts over the Champion of Irori, which is a Monk/Paladin mix PrC. I've never been a huge monk or paladin person myself, but I know a lot of people like them.

The Daggermark Poisoner gets all kinds of poison abilities, culminating in the ability to make any poison AS A FULL-ROUND ACTION at 10th level. Wow.

I personally love the Magaambyan Arcanist, because it's a more nature-themed arcane caster, gaining several druid spells added to her spell list, and it even makes Spell Mastery a useful feat, letting you spontaneously convert spells into ones you've memorized with that feat.

The Razmiran Priest sort of builds on the Sorcerer archetype of the same name, giving you more divine-seeming spell options and even letting you "channel energy". Pretty cool.

The Tattooed Mystic takes over where the Tattooed Sorcerer archetype left off, continuing the focus on spell tattoos and gaining some cool new supernatural tattoo choices.

Finally, the Winter Witch is all you'd expect her to be, cutting through cold resistance, then later ignoring cold resistance entirely. She gets a few hexes but her hex progression is slowed, so expect to be choosing Extra Hex a few times when you start into this PrC.

I do like the image of a hobgoblin ranger or cavalier/mammoth rider with a Huge wolf steed...

The Mammoth Rider is really awesome... except that good luck for PCs to make their mounts follow them in dungeons, but it rocks for open spaces.

However, a Huge camel is kinda weird... and a woolly mammoth has already been stated as using the same stats as a mastodon, so why the repetition ?

BTW, is it safe to assume that any Large quadrupedal animal companion makes a suitable mount for the PrC ? Because they left out a few.

I'm really excited about the Shieldmarshal. Basically a gunslinger with the inquisitor's judgement ability, but without the divine flavour. Also gives a few more social skills, and bonuses to those skills, so that the gunslinger is a bit more "I track down criminals, can pursue them easily through urban terrain, and can yell at them until they surrender if I so want" rather than "I can shoot guns!"

Liberty's Edge

Mammoth Rider is all kind of awesome but it requires a really high beginning level compared to other PrCs.

A Neutral Riftwarden going into Blackfire Adept (to take advantage of the common prerequisites) would just devastate the competition.

I see some nice potential in the Dawnflower Dissident, Hellknight Signifier and Noble Scion and of course the Champion of Irori.

Just read the Blackfire Adept and altho I never play casty classes or the summoner, I just had the idea of a synthesist/blackfire adept used accursed symphony on a mini boss just before going into fight the big bad. Gaining half the hps of a oversized tankish boss and having half their hps as temporary hps for an entire hour would make you dam hard to kill for a long time....

The thought of a small ratfolk riding a huge elephant is a really funny thought as elephants fear mice.

This made me start to look at the hobgoblin fell rider.... like fear? this guy gets it...
+4 racial bonus to intimidate, favoured class bonus of 1/2 to intimidate, +1/2 your level to intimidate while riding, free intimidate to anyone you charge, all enemies recieve a -2 to saves against fear increasing every 5 levels, make all enemies in 60 feet frightened as a standard action... Im thinking a 1 level dip into mammoth rider would be pritty sweet here, or go full out for a +12 str to the mount...

Heck im thinking of a barbarian with the raging mount powers taking this and getting stupid high str mounts.

Ima keep looking! o.O

Do watch out that blackfire adept does not progress your summoner abilities in any way, except for spellcasting.

Your summon spell-like and eidolon will remain low level.

You're better off entering blackfire from conjuration wizard or cleric.

Have to read the fine print: It lasts 10 min/level if created that way so not so useful.

1st level is good: 1/2 creation time for poisons though.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm really glad that the Hellknight Signifer is there. It's been a dream of mine to make a heavily armored arcane caster since the early days of 3.5.

That's my favorite from the book so far, but I'm fickle and might change my mind in 10 minutes.

The ability to grant temporary hit points comes few and far between (aid spell, false life spell, etc.), and I was hoping the 'false channel' would be a bit more useful. If the temporary hit points could be applied *pre-combat* (giving you a buffer of temporary hit points above your own) it would rock, and that's kind of what I was hoping for, reading the previews. Interesting to know what Domains Razmir will grant, if he ever makes it 'to the big time.' :)

Noble Scion give Leadership more power.

Yep. Leadership.

1) In exchange for nerfing your primary character. You become mr. OOC influence.

2) If it's not for your game, don't use it. It's obviously for character concepts that involve a leader of men or game groups that are small.

That being said, you could create the "Ultimate Jackass" character:

Fighter 5/Low Templar 1/Noble Scion X

You get your followers and cohorts killed, but you can always get more minions at no penalty thanks to Flag of Convenience :-)

I am really quite into Magaambyan Arcanist - it's at a sweet spot where it's not OP but it's definitely strong enough to be worth using. I may start a thread in the near future discussing what druid spells to poach, and the versatility bonuses are the kind of thing that seem really interesting to play with. The good-aligned magic bonuses... ehh, not so much. If Aura of Good qualifies you for Sacred Summons that's a nice benefit, but most of the Good domain is already on the sorc/wiz list and there aren't a lot of good-aligned spells that get a big benefit from +1 CL or a few extra rounds' duration. Still, you can't complain about getting Holy Word and it's even better if you're allowed to pick a subdomain. (There's not much text support for allowing that, though.) I kind of want to make a sylph wizard Magaambyan Arcanist to combine it with Spontaneous Divination for huge flexibility.

Champion of Irori is awesome for tons of smites. If you want to be really goofy it's compatible with Hungry Ghost to recharge your smites every time you take down an enemy, although tragically not with Drunken Master.

I have some seriously mixed feelings about Blackfire Adept. A class for full casters that loses three caster levels needs to give some very good stuff to compete. A lot of what it gives (Blackfire Taint, Accursed Sympathy, Blackfire Eruption) isn't really worth the actions or slots you give up. Breaching Legion sounds cool, except that you have no control over the summoned creatures and they're by definition going to be evil outsiders (who aren't usually all that inclined to play nice).
There are two things that kind of save it, though. First, Breaching's level 10 upgrade is amazing for letting you blast away Antimagic Fields and such, and that might be worth the lost caster levels. The other is the +2 to Planar Binding's limit from Blackfire Pact, which is amazing - it means that with three levels in the class (and thus only one lost caster level) you can bind balors or pit fiends with Greater Planar Binding, and with six levels you can bind a marilith with regular Planar Binding. Binding a CR 17 creature at level 13 (due to the two lost caster levels) is pretty respectable.

Noble Scion is the best prestige class ever because you get a butler and a weekly ale-and-wenches allowance. Honorable mention goes to Green Faith Acolyte for bringing back the first-edition druid kumite.

I'm thinking Ranger 1/Cleric 3 then into Skyseeker could make for a good combat cleric - sure you drop 3 levels of casting over the PrC but full BAB, d10hp, 2 good saves and some nice abilities. Forgemaster looks like a nice Archetype to mix in with it.

I thought the Champion of Irori was fun, although you've now got the most ridiculously MAD character in the game :P We roll stats a lot, so I've got the Champion back-burnered for a game where we roll up characters and I get a high spread.
Mammoth Rider was a blast, especially with the ability to add half your mounts STR mod to your charge attacks. Probably a lot of situations where you'll be patting your pet behemoth on the nose and telling him you'll be back soon (since he won't fit inside anywhere), but those moments when you're leveling your lance and charging on the back of your huge (or even gargantuan with the right build and buffs!) mount, knowing you're about to hit for a minimum of 120 damage.... good stuff.
The Aldori Swordmaster (SwordLord? Duelist? Whichever one's in PoP) was a pretty fun build for another Dex-based fighter-type.
I was a little disappointed by the Arclord of Nex, but that may be because I've had way to many Craft focused wizards in my campaigns lately and failed to be impressed by another one.
Great book over all though, a lot of really solid flavorful stuff that gives you a reason to want to play it without actually outshining the existing material mechanically or being particularly OP anywhere.

Maybe a single dip in Ninja can help, so you can use Charisma to fuel Ki points? And since you can use heavy armor, Wis and Dex don't have to be too high, I'm guessing

Silver Crusade

The Champion of Irori's paladin abilities can help ease some of the MAD and can actually be pretty helpful for making the monk feel more like the archetypical monk(that is, focusing on dexterity rather than being forced to go BEEFMONK).

Smites help with STR issues against evil targets at least. Lay on Hands help with CON needs. CoI adds a "need to have" stat, but if it reduces the need for two others...bonus!
