Just Spreading The Word on the cool new game by Monte Cook. Check it out, participate in the kick starter if you can. The min has already been met, so now we are just adding more cool stuff.

Sovereign Court

Oh wow, that's pretty interesting. I like the idea of the setting. Not sure how well my group would do with that much focus on story though...

There's a sample of how game-play will be on Monte Cook's website.

http://www.montecookgames.com/actions-in-numenera/

It sounds pretty amazing and I do like kickstarters that have already reached their goal.

Thanks Alydos I was just coming by to fix my link . . .

I backed it! I'm sooooo excited for this thing. I really want Numenera to make the $300K mark because I really want a leatherbound edition.

Back this Kickstarter. It's Monte Cook.

Cool! I've been eyeballing it for a couple of weeks now but I haven't decided if I'm going to back it yet. What else makes you excited about it?

Admittedly, I've only looked into Numenera just a little bit, but so far I haven't seen anything for it that hooks me or gives it as much character as Fading Suns (for example).
Also, and I know that this is borderline heresy, but Cook's name alone doesn't make me interested so I'm curious about why the setting is getting everyone crazy.

I know I sound all curmudgeonly but that's honestly not my intent. Everyone else is really exited about it and I sincerely would like to share in that. So please, go crazy and totally sell me on it!

Heresy? Try and say Cook's name on the Giantitp forums and it rapidly devolves into a frothing, insane discussion about how my vision of role-playing games is way more valid and much better than the way anyone else plays. The bitterness can be licked off your computer screen.

Back on-topic; I really want a setting without magic! When everyone asks me how something was done I'll go "SCIENCE!!"

I'm excited about lowering the difficulty of a a task rather than adding dozens of modifiers that I might forget to use. (I'm looking at you +2 vs charm and compulsion) It's completely made for fast combat, reading the playtest reports the whole system is designed to make combat fast and furious. There's nothing wrong when the players know what they need to hit an enemy, or know what they need to roll to dodge/block an attack; it just means the combat flies fast. As long as you keep the story they keep on edge.

Mr Cook just released a blog post about how d20 rolls work. One thing that is different is that 17, 18, 19, and 20 all have their own extra benefits that are seperate (17 different than 18 than 19 than 20) but all overlap a little. While only the natural 1 is a critical failure.

The game is made simple from the ground up. It is Rules LIGHT. Any splat book is just fluff and technology. No more having to convince my players that it's -GASP!!- okay to deviate from the Laser precision rules and make their ideas real. At the same time I can have a consistent world for them to reference that is more transferable between groups than my own home-brew for super science.

There is also an incredible amount of humor you can add in to a far-science campaign. The first thing that comes to mind is the mammoth island they found where all the mammoths inbred to approximate genetic uniformity. Fighting through a giant fallen construct husk for hundreds of miles to find a medieval castle full of genetically identical, unadvanced frenchmen who have lived there for eons.

To further expand on Alydos's summation (and he hit quite a few of the big differentiatiors for this rules system) is that the lynchpin of the whole system isn't an all-inclusive, locked-down set of water-tight rules. Instead, Monte Cook is trying to develop a light, flexible system that players and the DM can use to really improvise their actions based on the moment, their character, and the story.

I have hopes that it'll be a solid system based on the abliity of the DM to come up with solutions to the player's desired actions based on the 'logic' of the moment... which should keep tings moving along better.

The settign itself is very wide open and intriguing, as well. Set 1 billion years in the future, with the adventures building on the mysterious relics of different kinds of accumulated technologies from the past to create a future in this dangerous and exotic world.

Why I like it, anyway.

And I do love the character creation system.

"I am a strong glaive who howls at the moon." And that's a character right there. Simple.

If I wasn't so broke, I'd back the heck out of this. Looks so exciting, I've always liked Monte Cook's work. :D

Meh. Monte Cook. It'll be d20 and Timmy Cards all the way down. He's a one-trick pony.

Well my little troll friend, thank you for your thread contribution. Could you please explain what is wrong with the d20 system the majority of this website plays and explain to us how you spent years fixing it.

As of writing this the world book is assured and Numenera is likely to be in all color!

The Exchange

So close to the $350,000 mark for the world book stretch goal (344k at the time of this post).
I've done my part, I hope it makes it with only 3 days left to go.

Thanks for the extra info guys!
I'm not really seeing anything about the project that floors me personally, so I think I'm going to pass on it.
I hope that it turns out to be completely amazing for you all though!

Without going into the problems that the d20 system has (fairly well-documented over the past dozen years), I'll just say this:

Vanilla ice cream is good. I like vanilla ice cream. But that doesn't mean that that I'm not glad that there are a multitude of ice cream flavors out there. Sometimes a bit of strawberry or chocolate is good too.

@ Abbasax: Fair enough. To each his own, right? I certainly am not in the business of telling other people how to spend their hobby money.

@ Kthulhu: Do you have a link to these well-documented problems of a d20 system. I know what my beefs with it are, but I certainly haven't heard that there's a whole big row about it. I'm genuinely interested.

EDIT: re-thought my post and removed some stuff. nothing to see here.

Also, now I want some vanilla ice cream.

I wish you could share some of the enthusiasm for Numenera but some projects aren't to everyone's taste. I wish I could have shared in the enthusiasm for the rebooted WoD are couple of years ago or even the upcoming D&D Next. Just not to be.

In case you're still interested though, I'll share my thoughts (and a couple links)...

Numenera excites me for a number of reasons. So far the system is sleek and story driven which makes for an excellent contrast to Pathfinder's comprehensive rules. Not that you can't tell great stories in Pathfinder (Paizo proves you can month in and month out with the AP and module lines) but the focus of the 3e/PF ruleset is just different from what Monte is attempting with Numenera.

I have a blast in the alternating PF campaigns our group have been playing for the last several years--but sometimes you just want something a little different. This game may just be that different something for my group.

I find the dice, actions, and effort mechanics very cool. All "DCs" are set by choosing a "challenge rating" of 1-10. We rate things on a scale of 1-10 all the time so this is pretty intuitive. And I like my d20s too so I'm glad he stuck with a twenty sider.

I like the concepts of GM and Player Authority he's building into the rules. We'll have to see how it all actually plays out but I have high hopes.

The Setting of the Ninth World has enough familiar science fiction/fantasy tropes to make it recognizable and the hints of other details (from the playtest reports, the short story, and in this article here) are fascinating.

None of this material is by itself radically new...FATE does story rewards for when GM's intrude upon the rules...He's basically using the d20 in the same way as PF does but with all the modifiers on the opposite side of the equation...Player's roll all the dice was an optional rule in WotC's Unearthed Arcana for 3e...the original John Carter books were science-fantasy...and on and on but as the old adage goes the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

This thing has really taken off in the last week its at colored books now im hoping it hits the point where he makes the books even longer

More Numenera for you.

Monte Cook's Kickstarter has entered the final 24 hours. The project sits at $446,168. $60 gets you the print core book, plus PDFs of the bestiary, world book, tech manual, printable terrain, GM screen, three adventures, the player's guide, and XP/item/creature decks. You'll get your name in the back of the book as a Kickstarter contributor. You'll get the character creator app, which will include rules references and GM adventure creation rules. You'll get a Numenera anthology before the core book comes out to help tide you over.

Every book in the line will be full color. The core book will be 400+ pages. The bestiary and tech manual were 160 pages before a recent stretch goal that expanded them (specific page count hasn't been revealed). The 200-page world guide book has likewise been expanded.

At $450,000, Monte will add "significantly more art to the corebook and the hardcover books in the line" -- 15-20 percent more.

That's a lot of value for $60. For $10 more, you can get the Kickstarter exclusive adventure.

On top of that, you can add on a bunch of other rewards: all of the PDFs I've already mentioned (for those who contribute less than The Real Deal or Ultimate Ebook Fan); print copies of the core book, bestiary, tech manual, guide book, and adventures; print copies of the decks of cards; a limited edition Thunderstone game; Numenera dice; T-shirts; and a four-panel, landscape, vinyl GM screen.

Then there's the limited leather bound version. You can upgrade a copy of the core book to this spectacular, Kickstarter-exclusive book for $60.

If the $60 Real Deal level is too rich for you, consider one of the lesser reward tiers. Ultimate Ebook Fan gets you all PDFs for $50. Player gets you the player's guide and character creator app for $10, or Ebook Fan gets you that plus the core book for $20.

You have 22 hours. Don't miss out. Help us reach the next goal to get more art, and, at $500,000, a Numenera film by Monte.

Liberty's Edge RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Here is Numenera's Kicktraq page. Monte could really be producing a Numenera film. Part of me hopes he chooses to go animated...the concept art for the setting is so cool I'm not certain a small budget web film could really do the setting justice visually.

That is of course provided interested patrons get involved. Less than 19 hours to go.

I need to think of something quirky but consistent, whether it's something that shouldn't have survived an apocalypse or that is an iterative idea.

(McDonalds would be too obvious) Make it seem completely normal even when it's extremely out of place, everyone carries around an iPod

Liberty's Edge RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

In what context? It would have to be something that survives 8 apocalypses. Are you shooting for a humorous campaign or do you just want something to show up to stamp yes indeed this is earth?

Maybe rather than something pervasive its just something big like Mt. Rushmore? Perhaps the peoples of the previous civilizations protected it as a historical site maybe parts of it are broken and only one face remains or perhaps it's now larger with alien appearing heads next to the ones we recognize...or a combination of the two.

The heads might have been removed from the mountain and placed in a museum? In an exhibit of primitive earthlife perhaps. It could have been as perplexing to the future societies as the pyramids are to us...but probably for different reasons.

Even if the PCs don't see the actual monument maybe they stumble on some sort of futuristic gift shop kitsch.

Man this thing did so well
Im going to miss out of the play test to get all the books printed it kinda sucks but I think its worth it
I just wanted the playtest to see the stuff early and maybe play a couple games

The Numenera playtest application is now available here.

You should read the blog post carefully before deciding whether to sign up or not but if you're still interested in playtesting it's worth checking out.

**Edit: The how to playtest were an interesting read anyway.

Thanks for posting that I applied its a great document for play testing more people on this site should read this

Just downloaded the Numenera Core book.

Dang, this is nice !!!!

I just got a look at the Player's Guide. I'd play this game and LIKE it!

I love the underlying principles of this game. A friend and I play-tested some of it a bit a few months ago... I have to say it took some getting used to the basic mechanical elements.

I still love it, though.

Yea, me too. I hope that someone will create a DM "cheat sheet" on combat (especially) and skill checks to ease the pain of a similar but different system. If no one else does it, over the next few weeks I probably will.

Also, my home game probably would not like this. They are definitely the "kick in the door, kill the creature, take its stuff" lather, rinse, repeat, type of gamers. I will probably start up a PbP, either here or at rpol to run an adventure or two using this system.

-- david

Could be interesting. Shoot me a PM if you decide to do that. I may not be able to play, but I'd like to see how it goes in terms of the mechanics running on this medium.

Will do, although it will be at least September if not October before I start something up. Also, almost positive it will be on this site, and I will put [Numenera] in the subject line when I do.

I'll watch for it. :)

Silver Crusade

Going to pick this up at GenCon if I can. Money is tight.

Pathfinder Maps, Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Maps, Starfinder Society Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

Anyone preorder by way of brick and mortar?

Silver Crusade

Got the pdf. It's a really good looking book. I myself would love to play it. I have a few others in my group that are interested in it, but the older gamers do not like that most weapons and armor are set dmg and they have some problems with the setting. They are old school gamers and change is hard for them, though. I am surprised they even play Pathfinder to be honest lol.

Has anyone from the Kickstarter received their book yet? I've heard some had begun to; I haven't even gotten a shipping notice yet.

No, but then I am out of town until after Labor Day weekend so I hope in the big pile of mail that comes next Tuesday it will be there.

From one of Monte's updates, and the chatter on the 9th World Hub, there;
a) Were no shipping notices
b) It is coming via USPS
c) Folks *are* starting to get them as early as last Saturday.

(above are for USA backers)

-- david

I got my book today. Never got a shipping notice, though.

For reference, I'm in Dallas, TX.

Liberty's Edge

I as well (Austin, TX).

OK, so

1. No shipping notice +
2. Several beginning to get their books =
3. My book should be arriving any day now!

Thanks for the info, gentlemen; I'll go back to racing home from work every day to see if it's arrived.

I purchased the PDF from Drivethru and put it on my iPad. Been reading this over the weekend (sadly, did not know about the Kickstarter). It looks really interesting and would probably work well for running a Zelazny-inspired game.

Dark Archive

Has anyone in continental Europe already got his/her Kickstarter copy or preordered book?

I picked up the PDF after listening to an actual play podcast yesterday. Haven't read it all but I think I like the mechanics. The setting intrigues me more than I thought it would when I first heard of it. Looking forward to trying it out someday.
M

I received my book today and I live in London, Ontario so never fear, if the thing managed to make its way to my home in less than a week from shipping, it'll arrive in no time.

Check your e-mail associated with the Kickstarter, I got a UPS notice to let me know that it was on its way.

The setting and mechanics are awesome. I love, love, LOVE the flavor of the nano and it's the first time in a pen and paper RPG that I *want* to play a primary caster, more than the others by far.
