Adopted Trait

Rules Questions

I have a somewhat noobish question about this trait. Would taking it allow me to take an alternate racial trait for a race (for example, a catfolk's "clever cat" alternate trait)?

Nope. You can only take Race Traits, not Racial Traits. Yes, they're similar. There's also a huge difference.

What's the real difference between the two? On pfsrd they're all listed as racial.

Race Traits are found here. Racial Traits are found on the individual Race pages.

Ah ok. Thanks...I'm derping from my lack of sleep. Haha

Happens to the best of us!

I put it down to people using the term 'Trait' way too much. If they'd called them 'Advantages' and then said 'Racial Advantages' then nobody would be confused about Race Traits vs Racial Traits.

I house rule it like this:

If it's a cultural thing that can be learned, you can get it through adoption. If it requires actually being that race, then you cannot.

Example:

Adoption can give a human a dwarven hatred (a dwarf racial trait which is taught by special training), but it cannot give Elven Reflexes (a half-elf race trait, which requires elven ancestry).

This ignores the "racial vs race trait" confusion, and in place puts a more realistic option for adoption.

However, if you're going PFS (and if adoption is a legal trait in PFS), then it is vital to learn the difference between racial and race traits, because you cannot get a racial trait from adoption, but you can get any race trait from it.
